A Content ID claim by itself generally does not stop you from live streaming on YouTube. But a copyright match during an active broadcast can interrupt or end the stream, and if YouTube removes that live stream for copyright, your channel receives a strike and live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. Check the restriction notice in YouTube Studio for the status that applies to your channel.
Claim, live-stream match, and strike are different events
| Event | What it means | Possible effect on live streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | YouTube identifies matching material, often in an uploaded or archived video. Depending on the rights holder’s settings, the video may be blocked, monetized, or tracked. | A claim usually does not affect the channel or, by itself, remove live-streaming eligibility. YouTube’s explanation of copyright claims. |
| Match during an active live stream | YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content, including another live broadcast. It may warn you and replace the stream with a placeholder image. | If the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. This is not automatically the same thing as a strike, but a copyright removal can lead to one. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance. |
| Copyright removal and strike | A valid copyright removal request removes content and can give the channel a strike. | If an active live stream is removed for copyright, YouTube says live-stream access is restricted for seven days. If the channel gets another strike, that restriction becomes 14 days. YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance. |
So an ordinary claim is not a live-streaming ban. The higher-risk cases are a copyright match in the broadcast itself and a resulting removal or strike.

What YouTube requires for live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s general setup guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. Copyright-related triggers include a copyright strike on an active live stream and a match to another copyrighted live broadcast. The restriction shown for your account in YouTube Studio is the best guide to your current status.

What to do if a claim or interruption affects your stream
- Check the channel’s status. Open YouTube Studio and review current strikes, restrictions, and the notice explaining what happened. If a live stream stopped, YouTube directs creators to check the Studio dashboard for strikes.
- Address a match while it is live. Stop using the matched material or otherwise follow the warning. YouTube says the stream may continue if you address the issue.
- Prepare licensed material before going live. Ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- Dispute only a claim you have grounds to challenge. Valid grounds can include owning the necessary rights, a copyright exception, or misidentification. YouTube warns that an invalid dispute can prompt a removal request and, if that request is valid, a strike. Read YouTube’s guidance on disputing a copyright claim.
- Do not use another channel to bypass a restriction. YouTube prohibits circumventing an active live-streaming restriction; doing so can lead to further enforcement.
How to reduce the risk before a broadcast
- Use material you created, have permission to use, or can lawfully use under an applicable copyright exception.
- For licensed material likely to match Content ID, arrange allowlisting with the rights owner before the event, rather than relying on the license alone to prevent an automated interruption.
- Check Studio for channel-specific restrictions before scheduling or promoting the broadcast.
- Keep a copy of relevant permission or license records in case you need to explain your rights or respond to a claim.
These steps reduce avoidable problems; they do not guarantee that a live broadcast will never be interrupted.
