Does 5G Use More Battery Than LTE When Signal Is Weak?

Weak coverage can affect battery life, but there is no universal figure for how much more power 5G uses than LTE. Network setup, workload and phone all matter.

Sometimes, but there is no reliable universal percentage. Weak coverage can drain a phone’s battery, and some 5G setups may use more power than LTE. The difference depends on the phone, the carrier’s network configuration, signal quality and what the phone is doing.

Why weak signal can drain battery on either network

A phone in a low-signal area may use more energy searching for or maintaining a cellular connection. Apple lists “No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal” among activities that affect iPhone battery life. A peer-reviewed 2013 study also measured extra energy use for data transfers under poor 3G and Wi-Fi conditions, though it did not compare 5G with LTE.

That means weak signal is not, by itself, proof that 5G is the cause of faster battery loss. The phone’s coverage conditions and network behavior matter alongside the 5G or LTE setting.

Why 5G may use more power in some setups

Some 5G deployments use a non-standalone configuration, in which the phone uses LTE and 5G together. Samsung says that simultaneous connections in the configuration it describes can increase battery consumption and warmth. This is one explanation for higher drain, not a description of every 5G network.

On supported iPhones, Apple’s 5G Auto setting uses LTE when 5G would not noticeably improve the experience, which Apple says can save battery. Other phones may manage network switching differently; available settings vary by manufacturer, carrier, software and region.

Why 5G can also compare favorably with LTE

Battery use depends on workload as well as radio conditions. In a 2019 Signals Research Group study published by Qualcomm, tested 5G data transfers were more energy-efficient than LTE in good—not great—radio conditions because higher throughput offset higher current drain. When speeds were throttled to resemble activities such as video chat, LTE was more efficient in the tested setup.

The same study observed periodic current spikes on its 5G phone when it could detect a 5G site, including while idle or connected to LTE. Those results apply to the study’s devices and network conditions; they are not a current benchmark for every phone or carrier.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The available sources support two practical points: weak cellular coverage can affect battery life, and 5G can use more power in some circumstances. They do not establish a broadly applicable percentage for how much more battery 5G uses than LTE specifically in weak signal. A result for one handset, carrier, network mode or workload should not be treated as a universal comparison.

The relevant factors include:

  • Signal quality: weak or fluctuating coverage versus a stronger signal.
  • Network configuration: LTE-only, LTE plus 5G non-standalone, or the 5G mode supported by the phone and carrier.
  • Workload: a fast, large download versus slower or sustained activity.
  • Phone and software: modem design, generation, settings and operating-system behavior.

What to try if your battery drops quickly

  1. On a supported iPhone, consider 5G Auto. Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data and select 5G Auto, if that option is available. Apple says it switches to LTE when 5G does not noticeably improve the experience, saving battery. Labels or availability can vary by carrier and iOS version.
  2. Use stronger coverage when practical. Apple recommends using a device where it can get a stronger signal, since low-signal conditions can increase energy use.
  3. Use Wi-Fi for internet when available. This can avoid relying on a weak cellular data connection for that activity.
  4. Use Airplane Mode where there is no service for an extended time. Apple recommends it when a device will be somewhere without cellular coverage for a while.
  5. On Android or another phone, check the manufacturer’s instructions. Network-mode controls and menu paths are not universal, so do not assume that another brand’s steps apply to your device.
  6. Compare settings under similar conditions. If you want to see whether a network setting affects your own phone, compare battery behavior in the same location with similar use, changing one setting at a time. This is a personal check, not a guaranteed diagnostic test.
