Docs-as-Code vs. a Wiki: Which Documentation Approach Fits Your Team?

Docs-as-code suits Git-fluent teams that need review and release alignment; wikis suit broad, low-friction editing. A hybrid can cover both needs.

Choose docs-as-code when documentation should be reviewed in Git, tracked alongside software versions, or built and published through an automated workflow. Choose a wiki or shared-document system when contributors need to edit easily without learning Git or maintaining a documentation pipeline. Many teams benefit from both: keep version-sensitive technical material near the code and put broader team knowledge in a shared space.

What the two approaches mean

Docs-as-code

Docs-as-code is a workflow rather than a particular product. It commonly combines plain-text formats such as Markdown or AsciiDoc, version control such as Git, peer review, and an automated build or publishing process. The documentation can live alongside the code it describes, allowing changes to be reviewed and connected to software history and releases. Docs-as-code.org describes the approach, and Doctave’s guide discusses common workflows.

Wikis and shared documents

A wiki or shared-document system generally lets contributors edit pages through a web interface. Products differ, so evaluate the specific editing, access, search, history, and governance features your team will actually use; there is no single feature set that applies to every wiki.

Which approach fits your team?

Decision factor Docs-as-code is a stronger fit when… A wiki or shared docs are a stronger fit when…
Contributor workflow Contributors already use Git, text formats, and pull requests. Contributors need a familiar page editor and may not use developer tools.
Change review Changes benefit from diffs, discussion, and review before publication. Fast, direct edits matter more than a code-review-style gate.
Version alignment Documentation should branch, merge, or release with the software it describes. Knowledge applies across releases or is not tightly tied to one code repository.
Publishing The team can build and publish documentation through CI/CD or a managed service. The team wants editing and publishing with little pipeline upkeep.
Ownership and upkeep Someone can own templates, builds, hosting, search, and maintenance. The team prefers a hosted knowledge system with less infrastructure responsibility.

These are workflow-based recommendations, not proven universal outcomes: the available guides describe how the approaches work but do not establish that one consistently produces more accurate or complete documentation.

What you gain—and what you must maintain

Docs-as-code

  • Reviewable changes: Version control makes edits attributable and exposes differences for discussion and review.
  • Release context: When documentation is stored with relevant code, its history can follow the code and help keep instructions aligned with a particular version.
  • Automation options: Teams can connect builds and publishing to their existing development workflow.
  • Added process and upkeep: Contributors need Git and authoring conventions; someone must maintain the build, hosting, search, and documentation workflow. Doctave and Mintlify’s vendor guide describe these workflow considerations.

Wikis and shared docs

  • Lower editing friction: A web-based page editor can make participation easier for people who do not work in Git.
  • Broader contribution: Reducing technical setup can help more roles contribute, provided the chosen system works for them.
  • Governance still matters: Decide who owns pages, how stale material is reviewed, when edits need approval, and how to handle content that differs by software version.

How to decide where each type of information belongs

  1. List the material. Separate product and API documentation, operational runbooks, policies, onboarding material, and informal team knowledge.
  2. Identify contributors. For each type, note who needs to create and update it and which tools those people already use.
  3. Set review and version needs. Decide whether changes need a formal review trail and whether the text must match a particular software release.
  4. Place content according to its workflow. Put version-coupled technical documentation in Git where review and release alignment matter; use a wiki or shared documents where broad access and low-friction edits matter.
  5. Assign ongoing ownership. Name who handles search, navigation, stale-content reviews, permissions, and publishing in each system.

This framework applies the workflow characteristics described by docs-as-code.org, Doctave, and Read the Docs; it is a practical decision aid, not a measured head-to-head result.

How to handle non-technical contributors

Do not assume every contributor should use the same editing workflow. If subject-matter experts need to update policies, onboarding, or general team knowledge but rarely use Git, give those pages a web-based shared space. Keep Git-based authoring for material whose review history or release alignment is important, and make ownership and handoffs between the two locations clear. If a shared system cannot provide the review or version controls a particular document needs, that document may belong in the Git workflow even if it requires more support for its contributors.

Where should the source of truth live?

Choose the authoritative home based on what makes the document correct and maintainable. Documentation that must match a code release is often best stored with the relevant code, so its changes and release context can be tracked together. Knowledge that applies across releases and needs contributions from a wider group may fit better in a wiki or shared space. In a hybrid setup, label each location’s purpose and point readers to the authoritative version rather than allowing parallel copies to drift.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever arrangement you choose, a named owner should be responsible for navigation, permissions, search, and stale-content checks. Hosting and platform choices vary; Read the Docs and OpenDocs describe documentation hosting or platform options, but the right service depends on your team’s actual workflow.
