DocRaptor is a hosted HTML-to-PDF API powered by Prince; PrinceXML is the rendering software you can deploy yourself. Choose DocRaptor if you want a managed conversion workflow and usage-based plans. Choose a directly deployed Prince setup if local or cluster deployment and operational control matter enough to justify licensing and running it. Neither option is automatically cheaper or guaranteed to produce the same PDF in every configuration.
DocRaptor and PrinceXML are different kinds of products
Prince converts HTML or XML to PDF using CSS. Its documented technologies include HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript/ECMAScript, SVG, and common image formats; its paged-media features can produce items such as page numbers and running headers or footers. Prince’s documentation describes the renderer and its capabilities.

DocRaptor is a hosted API service that uses Prince for PDF generation. Rather than managing the renderer, a caller submits a conversion request and chooses a response workflow. Its API offers synchronous, asynchronous, and hosted-download options, along with Prince-related configuration and version selection. See the DocRaptor API documentation.

How to choose for your workload
Choose DocRaptor for a managed conversion workflow
- You prefer an API call over installing and maintaining a rendering service.
- Your workload fits a monthly plan, and you can account for overages or optional hosted downloads.
- You want to select from DocRaptor’s documented pipeline versions and its synchronous, asynchronous, or hosted response workflows.
Choose directly deployed Prince for infrastructure control
- Your deployment requires rendering on local infrastructure, a cluster, or a cloud environment you operate.
- You can manage runtime configuration, fonts and assets, security boundaries, scaling, and upgrades.
- You have confirmed that the license covers your actual commercial or noncommercial use, server count, and distribution model.
Prince documents server integration examples for Docker, AWS, and Azure. It can read local input or fetch input over HTTP or HTTPS, which makes asset availability and outbound network rules relevant operational decisions. If users can submit HTML, XML, CSS, or JavaScript, isolate that processing and control what it can access. The Prince server integration guide and input documentation describe deployment and input considerations.

Its licensing page also lists one-time per-server pricing for government institutions and other noncommercial entities producing internal or freely published documents, a desktop license, and an academic discount. These categories are not interchangeable: the license FAQ says commercial customer documents and paid conversion services require a commercial site license, while OEM redistribution requires an OEM license. - The Data Recovery Stick requires no technical skills — simply plug it into your Windows computer, click Start, and the software automatically begins scanning and recovering lost files within minutes. Compatible with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, & 11, it's designed to be a reliable first step when accidental deletion occurs.
- Recover photos (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF), Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access), Open Office files, MP3 music files, PDFs, RTF documents, AutoCAD files, and HTML web pages. Whether it's personal memories or critical business files, the Data Recovery Stick covers the file types that matter most.
- Works with hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, memory sticks, and other common storage formats that use FAT or NTFS file systems — making it a single solution for hard drive recovery, USB drive recovery, SD card recovery, and more. Note: a media reader is required for micro SD cards and some mass storage devices.
- No Installation Required - The Data Recovery Stick runs entirely from the USB drive with no software installation on your computer — helping prevent new data from overwriting the files you're trying to recover. This also makes it ideal for use across multiple computers or in emergency situations where installation isn't practical.
- Use the Data Recovery Stick on as many computers as often as needed — simply clear the recovered data between uses to free up storage space. Software updates keep the tool compatible with newer systems and devices, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.
- Estimate monthly volume and burst demand, including how many documents may exceed a hosted plan’s allowance.
- Include DocRaptor overages and any hosted-download charges that apply to your workflow.
- For Prince, confirm the license scope for your activity, servers, and distribution; include infrastructure and staff time for operating the service.
- Compare recurring versus initial costs, support and upgrades, and any data-handling constraints.
There is no universal break-even figure: it depends on your volume, operating costs, infrastructure, and the license quote that covers your use.
Will both options produce the same PDF?
They share Prince as the rendering engine, but that alone does not establish identical output. DocRaptor maps its pipeline versions to Prince and JavaScript engine versions; its API version table includes Prince 15.1 under Pipeline 10.1. The selected version, options, inputs, and environment all matter. Check the API reference for current mappings.

Before choosing, render representative documents through the exact versions and configurations you expect to use. Keep CSS, fonts, images, JavaScript behavior, and any required PDF profile consistent. Compare pagination, line breaks, tables, headers and footers, metadata, and the results of your accessibility checks. No general claim of rendering parity or speed follows from the shared engine.

DocRaptor documents options for PDF profiles, including PDF/A and PDF/UA variants depending on pipeline. A profile option is not proof that a particular output meets a standard. Prince warns that “Prince does not create WCAG-compliant documents by itself” and that the HTML source must be coded appropriately to address requirements. Prince’s PDF profile documentation and the DocRaptor API reference describe relevant options.

- Mix an audio, music and voice tracks
- Record single or multiple tracks simultaneously
- Intuitive tools to split, trim, join, and many other editing features
- Loaded with audio effects including EQ, compression, reverb, and more.

For accessible output, structure the source with appropriate semantics and document organization, then validate the generated PDF using the process required by your standard or organization. Confirm the supported profile and behavior for the exact version you will run; neither product makes arbitrary input accessible automatically.
ScreenshotNeo is an alternative for screenshot capture, not PDF conversion
If your goal is to capture a webpage as an image rather than generate a paginated PDF, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not replace DocRaptor or Prince for HTML-to-PDF conversion.
For example, its API can return a screenshot of a webpage:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Common decision pitfalls
- Assuming DocRaptor is a separate renderer: It is a hosted API powered by Prince, with its own operational workflow and version mapping.
- Assuming self-hosted Prince is free for commercial work: License eligibility depends on what you produce, how you distribute it, and the deployment; verify the appropriate license.
- Comparing a plan price with a license fee alone: Include usage, overages, hosted downloads, infrastructure, and operating effort on the relevant side.
- Assuming a PDF profile guarantees compliance: Source structure and validation remain necessary.
- Assuming shared-engine means identical PDFs: Verify with your own templates and matching configurations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DocRaptor just Prince as an API?

Can I use Prince for a paid PDF conversion service?
YesLogic’s licensing FAQ says paid conversion services require an OEM license; confirm the terms for your specific service with YesLogic.
