DocRaptor is a hosted API that converts submitted HTML or XML into PDFs using the Prince rendering engine. It is a strong candidate when a workflow depends on print-oriented CSS and paginated document features, but its feature list does not establish that its output is better than competing converters. Test it with representative documents before choosing it for production.
What DocRaptor does and how PDF generation works
DocRaptor accepts HTML or XML through an API and converts it into documents, including PDFs. DocRaptor’s API documentation says that PDF conversion uses the Prince PDF engine; Prince describes its own approach as converting HTML and XML to PDF by applying CSS. That makes the service relevant to reports, invoices, forms, and other documents where page composition and print styles matter. DocRaptor API documentation · Prince user guide

The API documentation lists pipeline versions mapped to Prince and JavaScript engine versions. Its newest-pipeline entry in the documentation consulted for this review was Pipeline 10.1, Prince 15.1, and JavaScript engine 2, with JavaScript engine 2 as the default. Pipeline options and mappings can change; confirm the current mapping and availability in the API documentation before relying on a particular engine version.
Which document features matter most?
DocRaptor says most PDF styling is controlled with CSS, including page size, headers, and footers. The following capabilities are vendor-described features, not independent measurements of rendering quality. Their value depends on whether the generated file behaves correctly for your content and downstream workflow. DocRaptor feature page
#1 Best Overall
- EDIT text, images & designs in PDF documents. ORGANIZE PDFs. Convert PDFs to Word, Excel & ePub.
- READ and Comment PDFs – Intuitive reading modes & document commenting and mark up.
- CREATE, COMBINE, SCAN and COMPRESS PDFs
- FILL forms & Digitally Sign PDFs. PROTECT and Encrypt PDFs
- LIFETIME License for 1 Windows PC or Laptop. 5GB MobiDrive Cloud Storage Included.
- Print layout: CSS-driven page sizing and styling, plus mixed page sizes and styles within one PDF, can help when sections need different layouts.
- Repeated page furniture: HTML-based repeating or non-repeating headers and footers support documents that need consistent branding or section-specific labels.
- Interactive or accessible documents: DocRaptor describes conversion of HTML forms into PDF forms and PDF tagging/accessibility features. A tagged output option does not by itself prove conformance with an accessibility standard; inspect the resulting PDF against your applicable requirements.
- Output controls: The API reference documents encryption and passwords, print/copy/modify permissions, DPI, font embedding, compression, and output profiles.
- Profile-dependent workflows: PDF/A, PDF/UA, and PDF/X profiles are listed with pipeline-specific availability. Verify both that your selected pipeline supports the desired profile and that the output meets the relevant conformance requirements.
How good is DocRaptor’s PDF output?
The available documentation establishes the rendering engine and configurable features, but it does not establish a comparative quality result. There is no basis here for saying DocRaptor is categorically superior to another converter. “Industry-leading Prince PDF engine” is DocRaptor’s wording in its API reference, not an independently demonstrated ranking.

- Edit PDFs with Ease. Modify text, images, and layouts directly within your PDF documents.
- Convert & Organize. Export PDFs to Word, Excel, or ePub, and organize files with ease.
- Read & Annotate. Enjoy intuitive reading modes and powerful tools to comment, highlight, and mark up PDFs.
- Create & Manage PDFs. Create new PDFs, combine multiple files, scan documents, and compress for easy sharing.
- Fill & Sign Forms. Complete forms and digitally sign documents with secure e-signature tools.
- Page breaks, widows and orphans, and tables that continue across pages.
- Headers, footers, page numbering, and mixed page dimensions or styles.
- Fonts: availability, embedding, and coverage of the characters your documents use.
- External images and stylesheets, including slow, inaccessible, or missing resources.
- JavaScript-generated charts or content, asynchronous loading, and canvas output if used.
- PDF forms, text extraction, tags, and assistive-technology behavior where those matter.
- Generation failures and how readily your team can identify the failing asset, script, or input.
Record the input, settings, pipeline, test date, and checks used when comparing outputs. This keeps a layout-specific finding from being mistaken for a universal quality claim.
Does DocRaptor support JavaScript?
Yes, but JavaScript is an explicit configuration choice. The API documents two engines: DocRaptor’s JavaScript engine and Prince’s built-in JavaScript engine. Both are disabled by default. Enabling both evaluates code twice, so choose the engine your document requires instead of switching both on as a precaution.

- Create and edit PDFs. Collaborate with ease. E-sign documents and collect signatures. Get everything done in one app, wherever you go.
- Edit text and images without jumping to another app.
- E-sign documents or request e-signatures on any device. Recipients don’t need to log in to e-sign.
- Convert PDFs to editable Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents.
- Share PDFs for collaboration. Commenting features make it easy for reviewers to comment, mark up, and annotate.
- DocRaptor’s engine: DocRaptor generally recommends it for popular JavaScript tools and libraries.
- Prince’s engine: Use it for cases such as drawing into a canvas with JavaScript or using Prince’s custom PDF JavaScript object.
- Asynchronous work: For delayed or asynchronous JavaScript, the API describes a completion callback pattern using
docraptorJavaScriptFinished(). Test that the callback is reached after the content you need is ready.
JavaScript errors can fail document generation. Test the actual charts, fonts, data, and asynchronous behavior in your production template; do not assume that browser execution will behave identically in PDF generation.
How resource loading and test mode affect troubleshooting
External resources and strict handling
DocRaptor’s API documentation says it attempts to fetch external resources for up to 10 seconds by default. Resource errors are ignored by default. If strict resource handling is configured, failures such as HTTP errors, DNS failures, timeouts, SSL problems, and rejected connections can instead fail document creation. This setting changes whether a missing asset results in an incomplete-looking PDF or a failed job, so select it based on your tolerance for partial output and your error-handling process. Test mode
DocRaptor’s API reference says test mode does not consume monthly document limits, but test PDFs are watermarked. The documentation also specifies limits on hosted test-document downloads and retention, and a row limit for Excel test output. Use test mode to iterate on layout and conversion behavior; it is not a way to obtain an unwatermarked final PDF. Check the current API documentation for the applicable test-document limits.
Common failure checks
- An image or stylesheet is missing: Confirm the resource is reachable from the conversion service and that its URL, permissions, and TLS configuration are valid. Decide whether ignored resource errors are acceptable or strict handling should fail the job.
- The request fails after waiting: Check for slow or unavailable external resources and the documented resource-fetch timeout behavior; isolate assets to identify the one delaying or breaking conversion.
- Dynamic content is absent: Confirm JavaScript is enabled, the selected engine supports the code path, and asynchronous work signals completion with the documented callback pattern.
- Code runs twice: Check whether both JavaScript engines are enabled; the API says doing so evaluates code twice.
- Generation fails after enabling scripts: Inspect JavaScript for errors and test the smallest failing document to distinguish script problems from resource or layout issues.
- A test PDF looks unsuitable as a deliverable: Test-mode files carry a watermark; evaluate final-output behavior using the appropriate non-test workflow.
Security considerations for sensitive documents
DocRaptor’s security white paper describes processing material sent directly to the API or fetched by URL, commonly HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and linked assets. It states that data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS and encrypted at rest and between servers. These are vendor statements, not an independent assessment. The information available here does not establish current certifications, contractual commitments, retention or deletion settings, or whether a particular regulated workflow’s requirements are met. Review the vendor’s current security materials and terms against your organization’s requirements before sending sensitive documents. DocRaptor security white paper

DocRaptor or a different rendering approach?
DocRaptor is a hosted API built around Prince. Prince is also a relevant self-managed alternative if you want to operate the rendering engine yourself; deployment, licensing, and current terms should be checked directly with Prince. The choice is less about a universal “best PDF” and more about whether the rendering features, JavaScript behavior, deployment model, operational responsibility, security controls, and current pricing and volume limits fit your workflow.
ScreenshotNeo as an adjacent alternative
ScreenshotNeo is not an HTML-to-PDF replacement for DocRaptor’s print-oriented document conversion. It is an alternative to try first when the actual need is capturing a website page as a screenshot or PDF through a website screenshot API. Its service removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo for product details.
