First clarify what “continuous” means: a scheduled service, a loop of prerecorded sermons, and a stream that stays live around the clock are different workflows. YouTube’s scheduling guidance covers upcoming live events; its cited instructions do not explain how to automate an indefinite 24/7 broadcast.
Choose the kind of “continuous” stream you need
Recurring or upcoming church services
Schedule each service as an upcoming YouTube Live event. The event gets a shareable watch page, and viewers can set reminders. The operator still needs to connect an encoder and start the broadcast for the service.

A prerecorded sermon loop or 24/7 channel
Scheduling an event is not the same as automating an unattended loop. YouTube’s official scheduling and encoder guidance does not establish a workflow for keeping a stream live indefinitely. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer broadcast will be archived in the same way. If you intend to run a continuous loop, plan how it will be operated and monitored rather than treating a scheduled event as an automatic 24/7 service.

- The channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, according to YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
- Enable live streaming before the first service. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the day of the event.
- Decide who will control the event and encoder. Keep access to the YouTube account and stream key limited to trusted operators.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage.
- Select Schedule stream. Create a new stream or reuse settings from a previous event.
- Enter the service title and event details, and choose the intended visibility and other metadata. Check the details carefully so the congregation can identify the correct service.
- Save the scheduled event and share its watch page with the congregation. Viewers can visit ahead of time and set a reminder.
Connect an encoder and send the service feed
- Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and locate the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter those credentials in the church’s compatible encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes both software encoding and external audio/video hardware; a dedicated hardware encoder is an option for more advanced productions, not a requirement for every church.
- Treat the stream key like a password. If it is exposed or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in the encoder.
- Start the encoder feed, then wait for the Live Control Room preview before starting the public event. Confirm that the picture and sound are correct.
Set video quality and check network capacity
Use an encoder configuration compatible with YouTube and the capabilities of the church’s cameras, audio setup, and internet connection. YouTube’s current guidance gives these recommended H.264 bitrates: 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. YouTube also recommends network bandwidth headroom of 20% above the total outgoing bitrate. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality; leave room for other network use and test the actual connection before the service.

- Test with representative motion and audio, not only a static title card. A moving speaker, camera changes, and music can reveal problems that a still image will not.
- Check the encoder’s selected resolution, frame rate, and outgoing bitrate against the settings you intend to use in YouTube.
- Monitor the Live Control Room preview and stream health during the service. Have an operator available to respond if the feed, audio, or connection fails.
Clear rights for sermons, songs, and recordings
A church service may include worship music, backing tracks, recorded introductions, or other material created by third parties. YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Review permissions for every song and recording before broadcasting; a licence for an in-person service should not be assumed to cover a livestream.
YouTube warns that matching third-party content can interrupt or terminate a live stream. Even licensed content may be interrupted unless the relevant rights-holder allowlists the channel in Content ID. Resolve permissions and any necessary allowlisting before the service rather than relying on a post-stream dispute.

Troubleshoot common problems
Live streaming is not available
Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first time live streaming has been enabled, allow up to 24 hours for activation.

The event is scheduled but no preview appears
Confirm that the encoder is sending to the stream URL for the correct event and that it has the current stream key. Check that the encoder has actually started transmitting, then inspect its connection and YouTube’s stream-health status.

The stream key no longer works
Verify that the encoder is using the key associated with the scheduled event. If the key was reset, update the encoder with the replacement. Reset it in Live Control Room if it may have been exposed.
Video or audio is unstable
Test the upload connection and compare its available capacity with the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check the encoder’s selected settings, cables and audio inputs, and monitor the preview before going live.
A song or recording interrupts the broadcast
Check the rights for the matched material and contact the rights-holder about any needed Content ID allowlisting. YouTube may interrupt or terminate a stream when third-party content is detected.
