Before adding a Docker container, decide which networks it should join, which services it must reach, and which ports—if any—need to be reachable from the host or outside it. These six checks focus on Docker bridge networks and Compose. Exact behavior can depend on your Docker Engine version, operating system, host firewall, and network driver, so verify those details before changing exposure or connectivity settings.
1. Choose a network deliberately
Containers started without an explicit network use Docker’s default bridge. For a configurable bridge with automatic name resolution among attached containers, create a user-defined bridge instead. In Compose, services normally join a project network that Compose creates, and they can discover one another by service name.

| Network option | Container reachability | Service-name discovery | Host port publishing | How membership is set | Shares host network stack? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Default bridge | Containers on the network can communicate, subject to host and container configuration. | Does not provide the user-defined bridge name-resolution behavior described by Docker. | Use published ports when access from outside the network is needed. | Containers without another network are attached by default. | No. |
| User-defined bridge | Attached containers can reach one another’s ports. | Yes, automatic DNS resolution for attached containers. | Not needed for communication between containers on the same bridge; publish ports for access from outside it. | Choose the bridge when creating or running containers, or configure membership through Compose. | No. |
| Compose project network | Services sharing a network can communicate. | Yes, services are discoverable by service name. | Publish a port when access from the host or outside the network is needed. | Compose creates a project network by default; service network declarations can assign services to selected networks. | No. |
| Host mode in Compose | The container uses the host’s network stack rather than an isolated bridge network. | Compose service-name DNS does not work in host mode. | Port mapping is not supported. | Select host mode in the Compose service configuration. | Yes. |
For the distinctions above, see Docker’s documentation on bridge networks and Compose networking. These comparisons cover the documented bridge and Compose behaviors; they do not describe every network driver or deployment mode.

2. Limit network membership to the services that need it
Containers on the same user-defined bridge can communicate on all ports. A network can clarify which services need a connection, but it is not a security boundary between services that share that network. Keep membership as narrow as the application’s actual communication paths allow.
For example, a front tier and a back tier can use separate Compose networks so that only the services requiring each connection join it:
services:
web:
image: example-web
networks:
- front
api:
image: example-api
networks:
- front
- back
database:
image: example-database
networks:
- back
networks:
front:
back:
Here, web and api share front, while api and database share back. The database is not attached to the front network. This expresses intended reachability; it does not guarantee that services on a shared network are protected from each other. See Compose network configuration and Docker’s bridge driver documentation.

3. Use service names, not fixed container IPs
On a user-defined bridge, Docker provides automatic DNS resolution between attached containers. Compose services are reachable by service name on their shared network, so an application can connect to a service such as database rather than depending on a container IP.
This matters when Compose replaces a container after a configuration change: the replacement may have a different IP address while retaining the service name. Configure clients to use the name, and let Docker’s service discovery resolve it. Docker describes this behavior in its Compose networking guide.
4. Review each published port and its host binding
Docker Docs states: “Publishing container ports is insecure by default.” If a published container port has no host IP specified, Docker makes it available on host addresses by default. When only host-local access is intended, bind to 127.0.0.1 for IPv4 or ::1 for IPv6.

For example, a Compose mapping can bind a container’s port 8080 to IPv4 localhost on host port 8080:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteports:
- "127.0.0.1:8080:8080"
That limits the intended host binding; it does not replace reviewing the host firewall or other network paths. Docker also documents a version caveat: before Engine 28.0.0, hosts on the same layer-2 segment could reach ports published to localhost. Check the installed Engine version and your surrounding firewall rules before relying on localhost binding as an exposure control. See Docker’s port publishing and mapping reference.
5. Question special network modes before using them
Host mode
In Compose host mode, the container shares the host network stack. Docker documents that port mapping is not supported in this mode and Compose service-name DNS does not work. Use it only when the application genuinely requires host-network behavior, after accounting for the loss of those Compose networking features.

None mode
The none network mode turns off container networking. It is unsuitable for a service that must communicate over Docker networks or the network. Check the consequences for that service before selecting it. Docker’s Compose networking documentation explains these modes.
6. Inspect the running configuration
Configuration files show what you intended to run; Docker’s inspection commands show the current network membership and port mappings. Run these checks against the actual project and service names in your environment:
-
Inspect a network’s current membership with
docker network inspect <network-name>. Check that the expected containers appear and that unintended containers are not attached.Best Value

docker compose port <service> <container-port>, replacing the placeholders with the service name and container port. -
If membership looks right but a connection still fails, test from inside a running service container with
docker compose exec <service> <command>. This runs a command in that service’s container, allowing you to check connectivity from its network context.
These checks confirm aspects of the current configuration; they do not, on their own, prove that an application is healthy or that its network exposure is secure. Docker documents these Compose network and CLI behaviors in its networking guide.
