If a Docker image runs on your Mac but the server reports exec format error, first check whether the image and the executable it starts were built for the server’s CPU architecture. A container shares its host’s kernel; it does not make an arm64 program automatically runnable on an amd64 server, or vice versa. The durable fix is to build for the server’s platform—or publish a multi-platform image containing a matching variant.
Why does an image work on a Mac but fail on a server?
Macs with Apple silicon use ARM architecture, while many servers use x86-64, represented by Docker as linux/amd64. Apple silicon Macs commonly use linux/arm64 for Linux containers. If you build only for the machine doing the build, the resulting image or a program copied into it may not be compatible with the server.

Containers share the host kernel, so the code inside them must be compatible with the host. Docker describes the mismatch directly: “This is why you can’t run a linux/amd64 container on an arm64 host (without using emulation), or a Windows container on a Linux host.” Docker’s multi-platform builds guide explains the compatibility requirement and image format.
The error is not proof that the image’s declared platform is wrong. A correctly labelled image can still contain an entrypoint executable built for another architecture—for example, a binary compiled on a developer’s machine and copied into the image. Check the executable that actually starts as well as the image platform. This follows from Docker’s requirement that the code itself be compatible with the host.

How to diagnose the mismatch
- Identify the server target. Record the server’s operating system and CPU architecture. Docker platform strings combine these details, such as
linux/amd64orlinux/arm64. - Check the image platform. Inspect the image you deploy, rather than assuming it matches the server because it built successfully on your Mac. If you use Buildx, its builder inspection can show which runtime platforms the builder supports. In a clean setup, runtime support is limited to the system architecture unless emulation or other support is available; see the Buildx build reference.
- Inspect the entrypoint and its dependencies. Find the executable or script named in the image’s entrypoint. If the image platform matches the server but the error remains, check whether a compiled binary was copied from a host build, and whether a script’s interpreter is available and valid in the container.
- Build for the server or publish multiple variants. If the image or executable targets a different architecture, rebuild for the deployment platform. If the same image reference must serve multiple architectures, publish a multi-platform image.
Architecture mismatch is a common explanation for this Mac-to-server failure, but not the only possible cause of exec format error. A malformed script, invalid interpreter declaration, or another executable-format problem may need separate investigation.
Build for one server architecture or multiple platforms
One known deployment platform
If the image is only for a server with a known platform, explicitly target it during the build. For example, use --platform linux/amd64 for an amd64 Linux server or --platform linux/arm64 for an arm64 Linux server. Confirm that compiled application binaries are built for the same target; setting the image platform alone does not convert a prebuilt executable.

One image reference for amd64 and arm64
Build both variants and push the result to a registry:
docker buildx build --platform linux/amd64,linux/arm64 -t your-image:tag --push .
A multi-platform image is a manifest list that points to platform-specific manifests and layers. When the image is pulled, Docker selects the matching variant for the host. The --push flag matters with the docker-container Buildx driver: its output is not automatically loaded into the local Docker Engine image store, so publishing to a registry is a documented way to make the result available.

For Docker Build Cloud, specify the target platforms with --platform; Docker’s guide says the cloud builder otherwise builds for the architecture matching the local environment. See Building with Docker Build Cloud.

| Approach | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Single-platform build | Deployment has one known platform | Simplest setup, but another architecture needs a separate target build. |
| Multi-platform manifest | The same image reference must work across supported architectures | Requires a builder and publication flow that create and publish multiple variants. |
| QEMU emulation | A convenient starting point when native target hardware is unavailable | Can be much slower for compute-intensive builds. |
| Native builder nodes | Performance-sensitive or more complicated builds | Requires setting up and managing a multi-node builder. |
| Cross-compilation | The project’s compiler supports target builds | Toolchains and dependencies must be configured for the target. |
| Docker Build Cloud | Teams that want managed native multi-platform builders | It is an external service; check current availability, terms, and cost. |
Docker documents QEMU, native builder nodes, and cross-compilation as distinct approaches. Official BuildKit releases commonly bundle QEMU user-mode emulators, so manual installation is often unnecessary, though third-party packages may differ. Docker also documents Build Cloud as a managed option with ARM and x86 builders and shared build cache. These are workflow tradeoffs, not comparative benchmark results. See Docker’s build-method guidance and the Build Cloud guide.

Cross-compile application binaries with BuildKit
For a compiled application, use the build machine’s platform for the build stage and pass the requested target OS and architecture to the compiler. Docker’s Go pattern is:
FROM --platform=$BUILDPLATFORM golang:alpine AS build
ARG TARGETOS
ARG TARGETARCH
WORKDIR /app
COPY . .
RUN GOOS=${TARGETOS} GOARCH=${TARGETARCH} go build -o server .
FROM alpine
COPY --from=build /app/server /server
ENTRYPOINT ["/server"]
BuildKit provides automatic platform arguments including TARGETPLATFORM, TARGETOS, TARGETARCH, TARGETVARIANT, BUILDPLATFORM, BUILDOS, and BUILDARCH. They are global arguments, so declare the ones you use with ARG inside the build stage before using them there. The Go command shown is language-specific; adapt the compiler command, target settings, and output for your toolchain. See the Dockerfile reference for argument scope and the multi-platform guide for the example pattern.

Check the result before deploying
- The target platform matches the server’s operating system and CPU architecture.
- The executable named by the entrypoint was compiled for that target, rather than copied from a build on the developer’s host.
- A multi-platform build includes every architecture that needs to pull the image.
- The published image is available in the registry used by the server. With the
docker-containerBuildx driver, do not assume a build automatically appears in the local Docker Engine image store. - If the platform and executable appear compatible, investigate other executable-format causes, including the script and its interpreter.
