Docker Container Persistence Explained: Volumes, Bind Mounts, and tmpfs

Docker container-managed persistence keeps application data outside a container’s writable layer. Learn when to use a volume, bind mount, or tmpfs.

In Docker, container-managed persistence means storing application data outside a container’s writable layer so it can remain available after that container is removed. The usual choice for durable application data is a Docker volume; bind mounts expose a specific host path, while tmpfs holds temporary data in memory.

What container-managed persistence means in Docker

“Container-managed persistence” is a useful description of a storage pattern, not the name of a separate Docker feature. A container’s writable layer belongs to that particular container. When the container is destroyed, data written only to that layer is lost. To retain data, mount storage outside the writable layer at the path where the application expects to read or write files.

Docker describes volumes as “persistent data stores for containers, created and managed by Docker.” A volume has a lifecycle independent of any one container: a replacement container can mount the same volume and use its retained files. See Docker’s volume documentation.

This is distinct from Docker’s daemon storage backend and storage drivers, which concern such things as image storage and how the engine manages container filesystems. The practical question here is where application data lives and whether it remains available when a container is replaced.

How volumes, bind mounts, and tmpfs differ

Storage type Where the data is managed Survives container removal? Best suited to
Docker volume Docker manages the storage location on the host. Yes, when the volume itself is retained; another container can mount it. Persistent application data, including database files.
Bind mount A specific path chosen on the host is mounted into the container. The host files remain independently of the container, subject to host-side changes and deletion. Files that both host and container need to access, such as source code or configuration.
tmpfs mount Memory-backed temporary storage. No. Its contents disappear when the container stops. Data that is temporary and should not persist.

Volumes are generally the straightforward option when Docker-managed persistence is the goal. A bind mount is useful when the exact host directory matters, but it couples the container to that host path. Bind mounts are writable by default, so a process in the container can change files on the host; Docker documents their behavior at Bind mounts. A tmpfs mount is not a persistence solution: its contents are intentionally temporary. Details are in Docker’s tmpfs documentation.

Keep data after removing a container with a named volume

Create a named volume and mount it at the directory where the application writes its data. The container sees the mounted directory; Docker manages the volume separately.

docker volume create app-data
docker run -d --name app -v app-data:/data my-image

In this example, the application must actually write its files under /data for them to be stored in the volume. Removing the container does not by itself remove the named volume. A later container can mount app-data at the same path and access the files that remain. Docker’s getting-started example demonstrates this pattern with a volume named log-data mounted at /logs: Persisting container data.

Use a volume for database files—but keep backups

Database files need to outlive a particular database container, so a volume mounted at the database’s data directory is a common pattern. Docker’s guide illustrates attaching a volume to a database container’s data directory so files can remain available across container restarts and removals: Persisting container data.

A volume provides persistence relative to the container lifecycle, not a backup. It does not by itself protect against accidental deletion of the volume, host failure, corruption, or other loss. Use a backup process appropriate to the application and verify that restores work.

Choose a mount by asking what needs access

  • Choose a Docker volume when application data should be managed by Docker and remain available to replacement containers.
  • Choose a bind mount when the container must use a particular host file or directory, such as a working source tree or host-maintained configuration. Consider restricting write access if the container does not need to change host files.
  • Choose tmpfs when data is short-lived and should disappear when the container stops.

These terms and behaviors are documented here for Docker. Other container platforms may use different names, provisioning rules, or lifecycle semantics; do not assume Docker’s definition applies universally.
