Docker Compose vs Kubernetes: Which Is Safer for a Homelab?

For a small single-host homelab, Compose may be enough with careful configuration and host security. Kubernetes suits operators who need policy controls and can maintain them.

For a small homelab running a few services on one machine, Docker Compose can be a sound choice when you review every project, limit container privileges and host access, and keep the host secure. Kubernetes is a better fit when you need controls such as scoped API access, workload admission rules, or policy-based traffic filtering—and are prepared to configure and maintain the cluster and its networking.

Neither platform makes a homelab secure by default. The practical choice is the set of security controls you can operate consistently, not the platform with the longer feature list.

How should you choose between Compose and Kubernetes?

Start with your topology and the controls you actually need. A single host with a limited number of services usually has fewer orchestration layers to manage with Compose. Kubernetes offers more built-in policy mechanisms, but they only help when configured, understood, and maintained.

  • Choose Compose when services fit on one host and you can carefully review their configuration, restrict access to the host, and manage exposure at the host and network level.
  • Choose Kubernetes when you need API-level identity and authorization, enforced workload security policies, or pod-to-pod network rules—and accept the extra cluster and networking operations.
  • Reconsider either choice if no one can keep the host or cluster updated, protect management interfaces, maintain backups, and respond to configuration or networking failures.

This is a decision based on documented control surfaces, not a measured security or performance ranking. A neglected Kubernetes cluster is not automatically safer than a carefully restricted Compose host.

What security boundaries does each platform put in your hands?

Security area Docker Compose Kubernetes
Who can deploy or change workloads Protect access to the Docker host and review each project’s configuration as trusted code. Secure the API and control-plane data; use authentication and scoped role-based access control (RBAC) to limit who can change workloads.
Container privileges Run processes without elevated privileges where possible and remove unnecessary capabilities. Use security contexts, non-root execution, Pod Security Standards, and admission controls; avoid privileged containers unless a requirement justifies them.
Workload networking Use Compose networks to organize service connectivity, while explicitly checking published ports and host exposure. Use NetworkPolicy for pod traffic rules, provided the cluster’s networking provider enforces them.
Secrets Secret behavior depends on the deployment platform. Do not assume standalone Compose has Swarm’s documented protections. Use the Secret API with deliberate controls over access and storage; encryption at rest is a control to configure, not a universal guarantee.
Operational work For a small single-host setup, fewer orchestration control planes may mean less orchestration to maintain; host and configuration security remain your responsibility. Policy and API controls bring additional work managing the cluster, RBAC, admission, and networking.

Docker Docs states: “Docker Compose treats every Compose file as trusted input.” That is an important security boundary: a project file can request access to host resources, and running it is not merely starting an isolated application. Read Docker’s Compose file trust model.

How do you review a Compose project before running it?

Inspect both the source files and the configuration Compose resolves from them. This matters especially when a project uses included or extended files, references images you do not control, or comes from an unfamiliar source.

  1. Read the project files. Check the Compose file, any referenced configuration, and the image sources. Treat the project as executable input rather than assuming a container boundary will neutralize risky settings.
  2. Resolve the configuration. Run docker compose config from the project directory before docker compose up or docker compose create. Review the rendered result, including values brought in through includes, extensions, or environment-based configuration.
  3. Investigate powerful access requests. Look for privileged, cap_add, host bind mounts, network_mode: host, host PID namespace sharing, and device access. Keep only access that a documented workload requirement needs.
  4. Reduce privileges. Run as a non-root user where supported, avoid privileged mode, and grant only necessary Linux capabilities. Verify that removing a capability or host mount does not break a legitimate function before deploying.
  5. Check network exposure. Identify ports published to the host and which services need to communicate. Compose networks organize connectivity, but do not assume their presence guarantees every isolation property you want.
  6. Protect the host and deployment inputs. Limit who can administer Docker, keep the host updated, and use images and configuration sources you have reason to trust.

What security controls does Kubernetes add?

Kubernetes provides several distinct control layers. They address different risks, so enabling one does not replace the others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

API authentication and scoped authorization

Authentication establishes who is making an API request; authorization determines what that identity may do. Configure RBAC with only the permissions each person or service account needs, and protect access to the control plane and its data. Anyone able to submit or modify workloads may be able to change what runs in the cluster.

Pod Security Standards and admission

Pod Security Standards define security profiles for pods, while Pod Security Admission can apply those standards as a gate on workload creation. Use an appropriate policy for the workloads you run rather than assuming Kubernetes applies the restrictions you want automatically. Security contexts can also set controls such as non-root execution and seccomp; available protections depend on the workload and host environment.

Privileged containers are a significant exception: they can override or undo several restrictions. Use them only when a specific, understood requirement calls for them.

NetworkPolicy and provider enforcement

Kubernetes NetworkPolicy expresses rules for pod traffic, but writing a policy does not by itself prove that traffic is filtered. Enforcement depends on the cluster’s networking provider. Confirm that the selected implementation supports and enforces the policies you rely on, then test the intended allowed and denied paths.

Secrets and stored data

Kubernetes has a Secret API, but a Secret object is not a complete secrets-management plan. Decide who may read it, how it is delivered to workloads, and how its stored form is protected. Kubernetes security guidance describes encryption at rest as a control; do not treat it as an automatic, universal property of every cluster.

Are Compose secrets, environment files, and Kubernetes Secrets equivalent?

No. They are different configuration and delivery mechanisms, and the actual protection depends on how each deployment is implemented.

  • Compose environment files supply configuration values; their presence does not by itself establish a secure storage or access-control lifecycle.
  • Compose secrets are sensitive data mounted as files, but the implementation is platform-specific. Check the behavior of the platform you actually deploy on.
  • Docker Swarm secrets have separately documented protections, including encryption in transit and at rest. Those claims apply to Swarm secrets; they should not be generalized to every standalone Compose setup.
  • Kubernetes Secrets use the Kubernetes API, so access permissions and storage protection must be deliberately configured for the cluster.

In either platform, account for who can create, read, mount, change, and back up secret material. Avoid treating a convenient variable or object type as proof that credentials are protected throughout their lifecycle.

What should you secure regardless of orchestrator?

  • The host operating system: apply updates, restrict administrative access, and keep only necessary services exposed.
  • Management interfaces: protect Docker access or Kubernetes API access from unintended users and networks.
  • Workload privileges: avoid unnecessary root execution, capabilities, host mounts, devices, and privileged modes.
  • Network paths: know which services listen on host ports and which workloads need to communicate; verify that intended isolation is enforced.
  • Recovery: maintain backups of important data and configuration, and know how to restore them.
  • Operational ownership: keep the deployment, its images, and its security controls maintained, and make sure you can diagnose failures rather than disabling protections to get a service running.

Which choice fits common homelab setups?

A few services on one machine

Compose is often the more proportionate option when services fit on one host and you are willing to inspect configuration and keep privileges, mounts, and network exposure narrow. Its simplicity is useful only if you still treat the host and Compose files as security-critical.

Multiple workloads needing enforceable policy

Kubernetes is worth the added operational work when you specifically need centralized API authorization, admission-enforced workload rules, or pod traffic policies. Confirm that your networking implementation enforces NetworkPolicy and that you can maintain cluster access controls and updates.

Unclear needs or limited maintenance time

Do not adopt Kubernetes solely because it has more security features. First identify a control you need and cannot reasonably achieve with your current setup. If you cannot maintain the cluster and its policy layers, a narrowly configured Compose deployment may be the more defensible choice.

Sources and scope

The platform-specific guidance here is based on official documentation: Docker Compose trust model, Docker Compose application model, Docker Engine security, Docker Swarm secrets, and Kubernetes documentation on security concepts, securing a cluster, Pod Security Standards, and Linux kernel security constraints. Configuration defaults and provider capabilities vary, so consult current documentation for the exact host, cluster, and networking implementation you run.
