What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Your laptop may be sleeping because of an inactivity timer, a lid-close or power-button action, or—on some Windows 11 devices—a presence-sensing feature. A screen that goes dark does not necessarily mean the whole computer has slept. First identify what happened, then check the power settings for the situation in which it occurs: on battery, plugged in, or both.
Is the laptop sleeping, or only turning off its display?
Before changing settings, note what the laptop does when the screen goes dark. Did audio or a video call continue? Does the keyboard or trackpad wake the display? When you return, are your apps still open? Did the laptop instead shut down or restart? These clues help distinguish a display timeout from sleep, a shutdown, or a failure to wake; the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

- Sleep timeout: The computer may be set to sleep after a period of inactivity. Windows can use different timeout values on battery and when plugged in.
- Lid or power button: Closing the lid—or briefly pressing the power button—may be configured to put the laptop to sleep.
- Presence sensing: Some Windows 11 computers have hardware-supported controls that can turn off the screen or lock the device when the user is judged to have left. This feature is not available on every laptop.
- Mac battery settings: Mac laptops have an option related to preventing automatic sleep on a power adapter when the display is off. Display-off timing and computer sleep are separate outcomes.
These are possible settings, not a diagnosis of your particular laptop. Microsoft describes sleep as a low-power state that lets a PC resume quickly to the previous session. Microsoft explains the difference between shutting down, sleeping, and hibernating.

Check Windows 11 power and sleep settings
Review the sleep timers
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Inspect the screen and sleep choices for both On battery and Plugged in, where available.
- Adjust the sleep timeout to suit your work. A longer timeout can prevent interruptions, but keeps the computer awake longer and uses more power.
Windows power mode and Energy saver also affect power use; they are separate from the sleep timer. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance.
Check what closing the lid or pressing the power button does
Open Control Panel > Power Options and inspect the actions for closing the lid and pressing the power button. Where the controls are available, check both battery and plugged-in behavior. A brief lid movement or button press can explain a sleep event that seems unrelated to inactivity. Microsoft notes that most laptops can be configured to sleep automatically when the lid is closed; see its Windows battery-saving tips.

Look for presence-sensing controls if the device supports them
On supported Windows 11 hardware, check Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep for presence-sensing options. The controls depend on device support and configuration, so their absence is normal on many laptops. Microsoft describes the available options in its Windows 11 presence-sensing guide.
Check sleep and display settings on a Mac laptop
Review the battery option
Open System Settings > Battery > Options and look for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Apple documents this option for Mac laptops; its availability and behavior may depend on the Mac and macOS version. See Apple’s guide to Mac laptop Battery settings.

Distinguish a dark display from a sleeping Mac
Check the display-off timing and Lock Screen settings as well as Battery settings. A display turning off is not, by itself, proof that the computer has gone to sleep. If the Mac genuinely sleeps or wakes unexpectedly, Apple recommends reviewing sleep settings and says safe mode can help determine whether software loaded at startup is contributing. The safe-mode startup steps differ between Apple silicon and Intel Macs; use Apple’s instructions for unexpected sleep or wake behavior for the appropriate model.
Work through the problem in this order
- Record the context: Note the laptop make and model, operating system, whether it was on battery or plugged in, and what you were doing just before the event.
- Identify the power state: Check whether only the display went dark, the session resumed from sleep, or the computer shut down or restarted.
- Check the relevant timeout and button behavior: Inspect settings for the power state in which the problem occurs, including lid-close behavior if applicable.
- Check platform-specific features: On supported Windows 11 laptops, inspect presence sensing. On a Mac laptop, review Battery and display settings.
- Restart and update: Restart the laptop and install operating-system and manufacturer-recommended updates. If the problem continues, use the operating system’s built-in diagnostics or contact the manufacturer’s support service.
Avoid setting the laptop to stay awake indefinitely as a blanket fix. It can use more battery and leave an unattended computer active; choose a timeout that fits the work and security needs.

When it may not be an ordinary sleep setting
If the laptop shuts down or reboots rather than resuming your session, or if the charger connection is intermittent, the issue may not be a sleep timer. Unusual heat or a swollen battery also calls for caution. Stop treating those symptoms as a routine settings problem and follow the manufacturer’s safety and support guidance. The fact that a laptop sleeps during work, by itself, does not establish a failing battery, charger, sensor, or other hardware fault.
