Docker-based PDF tools can cover many common Acrobat tasks, but the available product documentation does not establish which two tools were tested for this article or which one performed better. Rather than invent a hands-on winner, this guide compares two documented self-hosted options—Stirling PDF and BentoPDF—by how they work, what they cover, and what to verify before relying on them.
What a Docker-based PDF editor must replace
“PDF editor” can mean anything from rearranging pages to changing existing text and layout. A useful Acrobat replacement should be judged against the specific work you do, not its advertised tool count. Before choosing a container, list the tasks you need and test them on representative documents.

- Editing fidelity: Adding text or annotations is different from changing existing text or page layout. Confirm the exact operation works on your files.
- Document tasks: Check forms, signatures, redaction, OCR, compression, conversion, merging, and page organization as applicable.
- Automation: If you need repeatable or scripted work, verify whether the tool provides the API or workflow features your process requires.
- Dependencies: Test OCR and office conversion separately from basic page operations; they may rely on additional components or browser capabilities.
How Stirling PDF and BentoPDF differ
Both products document broad PDF toolkits and Docker deployment, but their processing models and deployment considerations differ. Their official feature lists describe capabilities, not comparative performance, editing accuracy, or a tested winner.

What to verify before selecting Stirling PDF
Stirling PDF documents Standard, Fat, and Ultra-Lite Docker images. Its version guide says OCR and office conversion depend on server-side components included in the Full feature set, so confirm that the image and components you intend to deploy support your required tasks. The documented fresh Docker setup enables login by default, provides an initial administrator account, and instructs users to change the initial password after the first login. Configuration persistence uses a /configs mount.
These are documented setup details, not a substitute for checking current image tags and defaults: installation behavior can change. For desktop use, the vendor notes that some advanced tools require a connected cloud or self-hosted server, so do not assume every desktop function runs independently.
Rank #2
- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
What to verify before selecting BentoPDF
BentoPDF’s browser-based WebAssembly approach is distinct from sending a document to a remote hosted service, but the precise processing path depends on how it is deployed and used. Review the self-hosted setup and test the required operations in your own environment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Office conversion has a specific deployment requirement: the browser needs SharedArrayBuffer, cross-origin isolation headers, and a secure context. BentoPDF says its Docker image includes the required headers, but access through a plain HTTP LAN IP typically does not provide the secure context this feature needs. Use HTTPS for non-loopback access when relying on Office conversion.

How to run a fair replacement test
- Write down your actual workflow. Include the document types and operations that matter—for example, editing existing text, applying a signature, redacting content, running OCR, or converting an Office file.
- Use the same files and tasks in each tool. Include representative documents rather than judging from a blank sample or a feature checklist.
- Inspect the output. Check text and layout fidelity, whether redactions remove underlying content as intended, whether OCR is usable, and whether converted files retain the structure you need.
- Test dependencies separately. Verify OCR and conversion in the exact Docker image, browser, and network setup you expect to use.
- Evaluate operations and access. Check login, persistent configuration, update procedures, reverse-proxy behavior, HTTPS, and which users can reach the service. Running software in Docker does not by itself establish a secure configuration.
- Record the basis for your choice. Note the product versions, deployment settings, tasks, and concrete output differences. That gives you a defensible decision instead of relying on a tool count.
Choosing based on your setup
If you want a self-hosted server with documented API and workflow features, Stirling PDF is a candidate to evaluate; check the image’s feature set and server components against your needs. If you prefer a browser-based toolkit that describes local WebAssembly processing, BentoPDF is another candidate; verify its behavior in your deployment, especially for Office conversion and non-loopback access.
Neither vendor’s documentation establishes that its product is faster, more accurate, easier to operate, more secure, or a better Acrobat replacement overall. Those outcomes depend on the documents, tasks, deployment, and results of a direct test.
