Are you supposed to tip flight attendants?
No. In U.S.-oriented reporting published by Travel + Leisure in 2026, tips are described as never expected, though airline rules can vary. A flight attendant’s service does not create an obligation to tip.

Check the airline’s policy before offering cash or a gift
Rules can differ by carrier, and an airline may restrict or prohibit tips or gifts. Check the operating carrier’s current guidance before offering either. Examples from past or dated reporting are not a complete or current policy list for every airline.
How to show appreciation without tipping
- Thank the flight attendant directly and sincerely.
- After the flight, use the airline’s feedback channel to send a specific compliment about what the attendant did. Travel + Leisure identifies post-flight feedback as an alternative to a tip.
Why tipping flight attendants has been debated
Tipping has been an exceptional and contested practice in the U.S. In a January 4, 2019 statement responding to Frontier’s tipping policy, AFA-CWA International President Sara Nelson argued that safety work should not depend on variable compensation: “Flight Attendants are certified for our safety, health, and security work. Safety is not variable and therefore base compensation for a safety job cannot be variable.” The union also stated: “Tipping is not part of a Flight Attendant’s compensation for serving as aviation’s first responders.” These are the union’s views on compensation, not a universal legal rule or a current policy for every airline. AFA-CWA meeting material from 2016 described a Frontier onboard card-device option that let passengers add a tip, which was shared among flight attendants on that flight leg and paid later through payroll.
