No. If your phone is secure, reliable, repairable at a sensible cost, and still meets your needs, replacing it every year is usually optional. Software support can make a phone useful for longer, but it does not guarantee that its battery, performance, storage, or other hardware will suit you for the whole support period.
What a phone’s update promise actually tells you
An update window is a model-specific commitment, not a universal lifespan. It may cover operating-system upgrades, security patches, or both, and the start date may not be the date you bought the phone. Check the terms for your exact model, region, and release cohort.
Google Pixel: support periods vary by generation
Google says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of operating-system and security updates, counted from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. The listed Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 family devices receive five years on the same basis. Google notes that updates roll out gradually and availability depends on carrier and device. Samsung Galaxy: check the eligible-model list
Samsung says it is extending security-update support for Galaxy devices by up to seven years as of January 2024. That is not a guarantee for every Galaxy phone: Samsung’s current security-update scope lists selected models and whether updates are monthly, quarterly, or biannual.

Security patches and Android/One UI upgrades are distinct promises. Samsung’s February 2022 announcement offered up to four generations of OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for select models, with timing and availability varying by model. Those historical terms should not be confused with its newer, selected-device “up to seven years” security-support statement. See Samsung’s 2022 announcement.
Apple: repairability is not a support-duration promise
Apple’s June 2024 report discusses repairability and longevity design; it does not set a fixed prospective iOS-support schedule for each iPhone. Do not infer a particular iPhone’s guaranteed update end date from that report. Apple’s hardware-engineering chief John Ternus wrote, “Repairability is an essential component of longevity, yet optimizing for repairability alone may not yield the best outcome for our customers or the environment.” That is Apple’s position, not independent proof of real-world lifespan. How to decide: keep, repair, or replace
Make the decision using the phone you own and the way you use it. There is no universal replacement age, battery-health percentage, or repair-cost cutoff established by the sources cited here.

Start with security support
Look up the exact model rather than relying on a brand-wide headline. For Google, check the per-model support terms. For Samsung, check whether the device is on the current monthly or quarterly scope list. A published schedule tells you about software, not whether the hardware remains dependable.

Assess the hardware and your real needs
Ask whether the battery lasts through your normal day and whether the screen, cameras, charging, buttons, and radios work reliably. Also consider the apps, accessibility features, storage, camera quality, connectivity, and performance you actually need. A new requirement can justify replacing a phone before its updates end; conversely, a long support period does not make a failing battery or damaged screen acceptable.
Get a local repair estimate
Compare a model- and location-specific quote with the expected remaining use and the cost of replacement. Repair availability and pricing vary, so examples from one maker do not establish what your repair will cost. Apple reported in 2024 that 11 key modules in the iPhone 15 lineup can be repaired, including the battery, display, cameras, and back glass; the company also said treating back glass as an individual module lowered customer repair cost by over 60%. These are Apple-reported claims about its own devices, not a cross-brand price comparison. Apple’s report describes its approach.

Repair options exist beyond that example: the Associated Press reports that Fairphone makes replacement batteries, screens, and other parts available online. Availability and pricing depend on the device and location. The Associated Press’s phone-longevity guide also recommends software updates and considers repair, protection, and cleaning ways to extend use.

Often, yes, if the phone remains secure and useful and a repair is practical. Keeping a working device avoids buying a replacement immediately, but reliability, repair access, and your time matter too. Protecting a phone from accidental damage can help preserve its usefulness; AP relays iFixit’s recommendation of tempered glass or TPU film for screen protection. A screen protector does not address battery wear or software support.

The Associated Press reported in 2026 that Counterpoint Research puts the typical smartphone replacement cycle at four years. That is a secondary report of Counterpoint’s figure, not a universal recommendation or a directly verified measure of the right lifespan for every owner. AP’s guide quotes Fairphone Chief Technical Officer Chandler Hatton: “What we’re trying to do is to support people to be able to use their device for longer.”
