Used Bookshelf Speakers and a Cheap Amp vs. a Soundbar: Which Is Right for Your TV?

A pair of used passive bookshelf speakers and a compatible stereo amplifier can be a strong choice for TV and music, especially if you want left-and-right stereo separation. They do not universally beat soundbars: a bar is often simpler to set up, and a model bundled with a subwoofer or surround features may suit your room and priorities better.

Will bookshelf speakers sound better than a soundbar for TV?

There is no universal winner. Separate left and right speakers placed on either side of the TV can create a wider stereo presentation than a single bar, which may be appealing for music and stereo TV audio. That is a potential advantage, not a guarantee: the speakers, soundbar, room and placement all affect the result. What Hi-Fi?’s bookshelf-speaker guide discusses stereo width, TV connections and placement.

JBL frames the choice in its published comparison guide as “convenience or customisation, simplicity or sound precision.” That is a useful way to think about the trade-off, but it is manufacturer guidance, not an independent listening test. The title’s claim that this setup beat every tested soundbar should be treated as one author’s conclusion only if backed by a documented comparison; the available source material does not establish the test models, method, listening room or results.

What a used passive-speaker setup needs

Passive bookshelf speakers cannot connect directly to a TV and play on their own: they need an external amplifier. The amplifier also needs an input compatible with the TV. Depending on the two devices, that could be optical or HDMI; confirm the actual ports and supported connection before buying. What Hi-Fi?’s guide covers common TV connection options, while JBL’s comparison and Bose’s home-setup guide provide manufacturer context on connections and setup.

Assess the complete system rather than comparing the price of a used speaker pair with the price of a ready-to-use soundbar. Your setup may also require the amplifier, a suitable TV connection, speaker wire and supports. The sources do not establish current used-market prices, so there is no reliable universal price threshold at which the stereo option is cheaper.

Check before buying

  • Confirm that the speakers are passive and that the amplifier can drive them; check the manufacturers’ compatibility information for the specific models.
  • Match an amplifier input to an output on the TV, or identify any additional device the connection would require.
  • Inspect used equipment for condition and include any repair or replacement costs in your comparison.
  • Measure the speakers and available space, and decide where each speaker can go without obstructing the screen or walkways.
  • Include speaker wire and stable supports in the total setup. Dedicated stands are recommended; if those do not suit the room, use solid, rigid supports.

Where soundbars have the advantage

A soundbar generally takes less space and simplifies placement and cabling. Some soundbars include a subwoofer for deeper bass, while some models offer Dolby Atmos or other surround and height effects. Those features vary by model, so check the specifications of the specific bar rather than assuming every soundbar has them. What Hi-Fi?’s guide, JBL’s comparison and Bose’s guide discuss these design and setup differences; JBL and Bose are manufacturers, so their comparisons should be read as vendor guidance.

How the main trade-offs compare

What matters Used passive bookshelf speakers and amplifier Soundbar
TV connection Requires an amplifier input compatible with the TV’s output; verify both devices’ ports. Often a simpler connection, but confirm the specific bar and TV support a compatible connection.
Stereo separation Separate speakers can be placed to either side of the TV for greater left/right spacing. One enclosure is easier to place; stereo width depends on the model and setup.
Bass Depends on the speakers, amplifier and room; no general performance figure is established here. A model bundled with a subwoofer can reach deeper bass; this is not true of every bar.
Surround or height effects Not established as a general feature of a basic two-speaker stereo setup. Some models offer Dolby Atmos or other surround and height effects.
Space and setup Needs room for two speakers, an amplifier and suitable supports, plus wiring between components. Usually more compact, with simpler placement and cabling.
Complete cost Depends on the used pair’s condition and the cost of the amplifier, connection, wire and supports; current market totals are not stated. Depends on the specific bar and whether a subwoofer or other components are included; a comparable price is not stated.

Consider powered bookshelf speakers if you want fewer components

Powered bookshelf speakers have amplification built into the speaker system, so they are different from a passive pair plus a separate amp. As one example—not a performance comparison—What Hi-Fi?’s budget hi-fi guide lists the ELAC Debut ConneX DCB41 as powered, with 2 × 50 watts of amplifier power and HDMI ARC, USB, line/phono, optical and Bluetooth inputs. Those specifications illustrate a more integrated option; they do not establish how it compares in sound or value with a used passive setup.
