Kojima Productions has presented OD as a new project about fear and the boundary between games and film, without identifying it as a continuation of another game’s story. That answer is an inference from the information available, not a direct statement from Kojima that prior games are unnecessary.
What we know about OD—and what it says about continuity
Kojima Productions announced OD with Xbox Game Studios on December 7, 2023. The official announcement says the game explores “the concept of testing your fear threshold, and what it means to OD on fear” while “blurring the boundaries of gaming and film.” It names Hideo Kojima and filmmaker Jordan Peele among its storytellers and identifies Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier as leads. The announcement frames OD around its own premise; it does not say that the game continues an earlier Kojima story. Kojima Productions’ announcement

In a June 23, 2026 report relaying an Entertainment Weekly interview, Kojima described OD as “a new game system” and said it is a single-player game intended to be as scary as possible. The report does not disclose the system’s exact mechanics or establish a connection to an earlier game. Windows Central’s report
Does OD connect to Death Stranding or Metal Gear?
The available public statements do not confirm story connections, callbacks, or continuity between OD and any previous Kojima game. Kojima reportedly had the concept for OD while working on Death Stranding, but that is a detail about when the idea arose—not evidence that OD is a Death Stranding sequel or that its story requires knowledge of Death Stranding. The same distinction applies to Metal Gear: no cited announcement or interview establishes it as relevant preparation.

Until Kojima Productions says more, it is not possible to rule out references or shared ideas. But a possibility is not a prerequisite: no earlier title has been named as required background.
Should you play an earlier Kojima game anyway?
Only if you want to explore Kojima’s work while you wait. Choose based on what interests you, not on a claim that one game prepares you for OD:

These are optional ways to get acquainted with his work, not recommendations established by OD’s developers. There is no evidence that any one of them is uniquely useful preparation.

In 2026 coverage, OD was still in development and had no announced release window. GamesRadar+ reported that performance capture and ADR recording had resumed after a Tokyo Game Show update, with production proceeding on schedule and the project taking shape through experimentation. That report described progress, but did not reveal whether OD connects to earlier games. GamesRadar+ on the Tokyo Game Show update

Kojima has also said, as reported by GamesRadar+ in late September 2026, that he wanted to keep quiet and release the game. That helps explain the limited public detail; it does not answer whether OD shares story continuity with any previous title. GamesRadar+ on Kojima’s comments
