No. Nothing in Konami’s official description identifies an earlier Silent Hill game as required preparation for Silent Hill: Townfall. The practical reading of the available information is that you can begin with Townfall: it introduces Simon Ordell, sends him to the remote Scottish island of St. Amelia, and is described as having a story and setting that may differ from Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f. That is an evidence-based inference, not a direct developer sentence promising that previous games are unnecessary. Optional references to older entries have not been confirmed.
The short answer: start with Townfall if you want
Play order is optional. Konami has not named Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, or any other earlier entry as a prerequisite for understanding Silent Hill: Townfall. The official setup follows a new protagonist, Simon Ordell, who arrives as an outsider on St. Amelia, a remote island off the coast of Scotland. That is a different starting point from the established protagonists and locations associated with previous games.

Konami series producer Motoi Okamoto has also said that Townfall’s story and setting may differ from Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f, while retaining the feeling players associate with Silent Hill. Taken together, those details make a direct play of Townfall the sensible choice for a newcomer. They do not prove that the game has no continuity links, returning concepts, or hidden references. The available announcements simply do not settle those questions.

A new protagonist gives you a fresh narrative viewpoint
Townfall centers on Simon Ordell, described by Konami as an outsider who reaches St. Amelia. The description does not require you to know a previous character’s history, solve an old mystery, or understand an established family before the opening premise makes sense. You enter the story through Simon’s arrival and learn about the island from his position.
#1 Best Overall
- Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
- Returning to an island town to ‘put things right’, Simon Ordell descends into a world of tense evasion, explosive confrontations, and mind-bending puzzles that slowly surface the truth of St. Amelia
- Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to ‘put things right’, encountering a town lying quiet beneath a heavy fog, seemingly abandoned but not at rest
- Venturing deeper, and driven to understand his connection to the place and its inhabitants, Simon begins to discover fragments of a past rising to the surface
- Experienced entirely in first person, Simon must explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including the CRTV, a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged
That structure is useful for first-time players. You can treat Simon’s circumstances, the island and the events surrounding them as the foundation of this game rather than as the next chapter of a single uninterrupted plot. It also means that playing another entry first is unlikely to supply a missing “prologue” for Simon.
St. Amelia is a new setting in the published premise
The location is a remote island off Scotland, not the familiar town used as the series’ best-known backdrop. A new geography can change the social history, imagery and way information is revealed, even when a game preserves the franchise’s atmosphere. The official description gives St. Amelia its own identity, so a player does not need a map of earlier locations to orient themselves.
Do not read “new setting” as proof that Townfall is disconnected from every other game. Konami has not published a complete continuity explanation. It only means the material currently available gives newcomers a self-contained place and arrival point to follow.

First-person presentation changes how the story is delivered
Konami identifies Townfall as the first full-length Silent Hill game presented entirely in first person. That perspective is more than a camera preference: it determines what you can see, how closely you experience Simon’s reactions and how the game can place information around you.
Jon McKellan, writer and director at Screen Burn Interactive, explained the design connection in a PlayStation.Blog developer interview published July 30, 2026:
Rank #2
- Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
- When Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to "put things in order", he meets a city lying quietly in dense fog, seemingly abandoned, yet anything but dormant
- After venturing further to understand his connection to this place and its inhabitants, he gradually discovers fragments of the past rising to the surface
- Simon must explore, evade and survive from a first-person perspective. It uses a limited arsenal of weapons and tools, including the CRTV: a portable TV to receive unstable signals
- The dodging is tension, the battles are hectic and the story-based puzzles reveal a truth that does not want to remain hidden
“For Silent Hill: Townfall, a first-person viewpoint was an indispensable foundation for integrating the mechanics around the CRTV device. Honestly, the CRTV couldn’t work from any other perspective.”
The quote describes Townfall’s own design foundation, not a system inherited from an earlier title. You can therefore approach the game expecting its perspective and investigation tools to teach you what matters as you play.
The CRTV is a central tool, not background decoration
The CRTV combines audio and video signals and is designed to be central to both encounters and discovering the story. Because the device is built around Townfall’s first-person viewpoint, its role is part of the game’s own method of communicating with you.
A newcomer does not need to memorize how an earlier Silent Hill device worked. Pay attention to what the CRTV displays or plays, how the game asks you to use it, and what changes when you bring it into an encounter. Those observations are the relevant context for Townfall’s puzzles and narrative revelations; no prior game is identified as a required manual.
What Motoi Okamoto’s continuity comment means
In a February 12, 2026 PlayStation.Blog discussion, Konami series producer Motoi Okamoto said: “While the story and setting may differ from Silent Hill 2 or Silent Hill f, this game will still retain the feeling of Silent Hill that players are familiar with.”
There are two separate ideas in that statement:
- Story and setting may differ. This supports treating Townfall as a new narrative entry rather than assuming it directly continues either named game.
- The feeling remains recognizable. Returning players may notice familiar tonal or thematic qualities even if the characters, island and plot are new.
The statement does not say that Townfall is unrelated to the wider series, nor does it promise that a player who has never touched Silent Hill will understand every possible allusion. It sets expectations about identity and atmosphere, not a definitive canon chart.
Could earlier games still add something?
They may provide familiarity with the series’ tone
If you play older entries first, you will arrive with a sense of how Silent Hill games use uncertainty, disturbing imagery and environmental storytelling. That can help you recognize the kind of mood Okamoto means by the “feeling of Silent Hill.” It is a benefit of familiarity, not a stated story requirement.
Townfall’s first-person format and CRTV focus may also make it feel unlike the entries you play beforehand. Earlier games can give you a reference point for that change, but they cannot substitute for learning Townfall’s own controls, presentation or narrative rules.
Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f are optional context, not assigned homework
Neither Silent Hill 2 nor Silent Hill f is identified by Konami as a prerequisite. You can choose either one if you are curious about the series before trying Townfall, but do so for personal interest rather than because the published Townfall setup demands it.
There is no official play-order recommendation attached to the available descriptions. In particular, no developer quote says that playing Silent Hill 2 first unlocks the intended meaning of Townfall or that Silent Hill f supplies essential background.

References and Easter eggs remain an open question
The announcements available for Townfall do not establish whether it contains optional callbacks, Easter eggs or lore connections to earlier games. That uncertainty matters if you are deciding whether to replay the series for completeness. You might discover references as you play, but it would be inaccurate to promise that an older title will explain a particular Townfall scene.
For a spoiler-conscious newcomer, starting Townfall first avoids importing theories about connections that have not been confirmed. You can always return to older games later if a reference makes you curious.
Choose your starting plan
| Approach | What you gain | What it cannot guarantee | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play Townfall first | The intended entry point of Simon Ordell, St. Amelia and the CRTV without outside assumptions | It may not reveal whether later discoveries echo older games | Players who want the newest story immediately |
| Play Silent Hill 2 first | A direct sample of a title Konami specifically mentions when discussing Townfall’s differing story and setting | It is not confirmed to explain Townfall’s plot or mechanics | Players who want a familiar series reference before the new game |
| Play Silent Hill f first | Another recent point of comparison for the series’ changing settings and stories | No prerequisite relationship with Townfall has been announced | Players interested in comparing newer interpretations |
| Play several older entries | Broader familiarity with the franchise’s history and recurring sensibilities | More time spent does not guarantee answers about Townfall’s unknown references | Completionists and long-time horror fans |
If you start Townfall directly
You do not need a special reading list. Use this practical approach:
- Begin with the opening premise. Treat Simon’s arrival on St. Amelia as your baseline. Note who he is, why he has come and what the game reveals about the island rather than trying to match every detail to an older title.
- Learn the CRTV on its own terms. The device combines audio and video signals and supports both encounters and story discovery. Follow the instructions and visual or audio changes the game provides; its importance is specific to Townfall.
- Let the first-person view guide your attention. Since Townfall is the first full-length Silent Hill presented entirely in first person, inspect the spaces and information the game places directly around Simon. Do not assume that techniques from a third-person entry apply unchanged.
- Separate confirmed information from fan interpretation. If a symbol or line seems familiar, record what the game actually shows before deciding that it is a continuity link. The published material does not confirm a complete reference list.
- Return to earlier games only if curiosity, not obligation, motivates you. A later replay can be rewarding when Townfall gives you a question, but it is not part of a required onboarding sequence.
If you prefer to play an earlier game first
Starting with Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2 is a reasonable optional choice because Okamoto names it when explaining that Townfall’s story and setting may differ. Think of it as a comparison point for the series’ established identity, not a chapter immediately preceding Simon’s arrival. Finish it only if you want that context; stop there and begin Townfall without expecting a direct handoff.

Starting with Silent Hill f
Silent Hill f is likewise optional. Playing it first may help you compare how the franchise handles a different setting and story, but no announcement says that its plot supplies Townfall’s missing background. Choose it if its own premise interests you, not to satisfy a Townfall requirement.

Playing a wider back catalogue
A larger replay is justified when your goal is historical context, not efficient preparation. The available Townfall information does not identify a specific earlier sequence, character or event that must be understood. You can therefore stop after any entry that answers your personal curiosity and move on.
Platforms, date and physical-edition context
Konami’s June 2, 2026 U.S. announcement listed PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store, and said physical PS5 versions were available for pre-order. The September 24, 2026 launch notice confirmed availability on those three platforms. Because the launch date has passed, current stock or retailer availability can change; the announcements do not establish present-day inventory.
If you want a disc, the PS5 physical edition is the relevant format. If you play on PC, the announced digital storefronts are Steam and the Epic Games Store. Platform choice does not alter the answer about prerequisites: no edition is described as requiring an earlier Silent Hill game.
What the franchise’s size does—and does not—tell you
Konami reported more than 17.8 million Silent Hill copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. That figure includes units shipped, store downloads and subscription services. It shows the scale of the franchise, but it is not a statistic about how many newcomers can follow Townfall or evidence that previous games are needed. Treat it as business context rather than a play-order signal.
Bottom line
Start Silent Hill: Townfall without playing anything first unless you personally want the extra context. The new protagonist, Scottish-island setting, first-person design and CRTV-centered storytelling give you a game-specific entry point, while Konami’s comments distinguish its story and setting from Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f. Earlier games may enrich your appreciation of the series’ atmosphere, and Townfall may contain optional references, but neither benefit has been established as a requirement.
