That dated answer is not a guarantee about every installation or local code. Outdoor antennas, metal masts and cables entering from outdoors raise different grounding and bonding questions, so check the rules adopted by your local authority or consult a qualified electrician.
First, identify what “grounding the antenna” means
The phrase can refer to different parts of an antenna system: a metal mast or support, an outdoor lead-in cable, or a protective device installed on that cable. The requirements for those parts should not be treated as a blanket instruction to connect an indoor antenna to a ground rod, plumbing pipe or electrical box.

The installation’s layout matters more than the word “attic.” An antenna mounted indoors with a lead-in that remains indoors is different from an outdoor antenna whose cable passes through the attic on its way into the home.

When the antenna and cable stay entirely indoors
A 2005 EC&M answer by Mike Holt says an indoor attic antenna does not require an antenna discharge unit under the NEC provisions it discusses. This is the most direct attic-specific guidance available here, but it is an older interpretation—not a current ruling for every jurisdiction or a determination of every other electrical-safety issue in an attic.
#1 Best Overall
- Effective Grouding (Earthing): Grounds coax cables for all major cable television, satellite TV, internet providers, antenna, and similar systems.
- How It Works: Removes noise and static from coaxial cable (often caused by wind, interference, dry weather/static build-up, and DC ground loops).
- Compatible With: Cable modems, televisions, satellite receivers, radios, HD antennas, free-to-air antennas (FTA), off-air or over-the-air antennas (OTA), wireless antennas, CATV, and many other coax systems.
- Technical Specifications: This grounding block works from 0 MHz to 3.0 GHz, passes high-frequency signals with low insertion loss (< 0.2 dB 2MHz - 3GHz), has gold center conductors, and includes preinstalled UV-protected rubber weather seals.
- Carefully Designed: Each metal block has been designed to meet and exceed industry standards and requirements.
That answer does not establish a need to buy and install a ground rod, grounding wire, coaxial grounding block or surge device for an indoor-only antenna. Do not add an improvised connection to plumbing or electrical equipment as a substitute for checking applicable requirements.
When outdoor equipment or a cable entrance is involved
An outdoor antenna system is a different case, even if some of its cable runs through the attic. A 2025 NEC code-development document reproduces provisions addressing grounding or bonding antenna masts and metal support structures, as well as grounding an installed antenna lead-in surge protector. Because this is development material, it does not by itself establish which exact provisions apply to a particular home or installation.

- Copper Steel Composite Material
- One copper cable extension bolt connector is included.
- 10 AWG annealed solid copper ground wire with steel core for greater tensile strength , great grounding conductor for electric fence, residential lightning protection and DIY usages.
- The Soft ANNEALED wire can bear winding and bending ,specially designed for satellite antenna electrical surge ground protection earth wire
- Outdoor antenna or metal mast: Check the locally adopted electrical code for requirements applying to the mast or support structure.
- Lead-in from an outdoor antenna: Do not assume the indoor-only antenna-discharge-unit interpretation applies to a cable entering from outside.
- Protective or discharge device: If one is installed on the lead-in, the applicable bonding and grounding provisions may matter.
If the system includes outdoor equipment, a cable entrance or unclear bonding, ask a qualified electrician or your local electrical inspector to assess the actual arrangement.

Which code applies depends on where you live
NFPA identifies the 2026 edition of NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code (NEC), as its current edition. That does not mean a state or city has adopted it. Local authorities may enforce an earlier edition or amendments, and NFPA notes that code reorganization is ongoing. For an actual installation, confirm the edition and local changes enforced by the authority having jurisdiction.

Keep workplace rules separate from residential guidance
OSHA’s workplace rule specifies 50.8 mm (2 inches) of separation between indoor communications conductors and certain other wiring, unless an equally protective method is used. It also contains grounding language for antenna support structures. These are workplace requirements; they should not be presented as the residential NEC rule or as a substitute for checking local residential requirements. See OSHA 29 CFR 1910.305 for the rule’s scope and wording.

- Application: Grounding of coaxial cables for satellite and cable TV systems to prevent overvoltage and signal interference.
- Compatibility: Supports 2.5GHz high-frequency signal transmission and is compatible with standard F-type interface cables.
- Installation design: It comes with screws for fixing and can be directly installed on the wall or equipment box.
- Safety protection: Static electricity and surges are diverted by grounding to protect the safety of back-end equipment.
- Applicable scenarios: Suitable for outdoor antennas, distributors, amplifiers and other signal nodes that need to be grounded.
A practical way to decide what to check
- Trace the whole antenna path. Confirm whether the antenna and its lead-in remain indoors or whether any antenna, mast or cable is outdoors or enters from outside.
- Note metal supports and installed devices. Record whether there is a metal mast or support and whether a lead-in protective or discharge device is present.
- Check the local code edition. Ask your local building or electrical authority which NEC edition and amendments apply; the current NFPA edition may not be the locally adopted one.
- Get help if the layout is unclear. Have a qualified electrician or local inspector review outdoor transitions, cable entrances and uncertain bonding rather than improvising a grounding connection.
