Do You Need to Change Your PC’s BIOS Settings for Faster or Safer Startup?

Most PCs do not need BIOS changes for a faster or safer startup. Learn how Secure Boot differs from Windows Fast Startup and firmware Fast Boot, how to protect against BitLocker lockouts, and when to follow your manufacturer’s instructions.

Usually, no. You do not need to change BIOS or UEFI settings merely because a PC feels slow to start or because you want a safer boot. For security, the relevant feature is usually Secure Boot. For speed, the relevant controls may be Windows Fast Startup or a manufacturer-specific firmware option called Fast Boot. They are different features, and changing the wrong boot setting can prevent Windows from starting or trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt.

Check the exact setting, confirm your PC’s boot mode and operating-system setup, save your BitLocker recovery key, and follow the computer or motherboard maker’s instructions before changing firmware.

Start with the goal: security or speed?

“BIOS settings” is a broad term. Modern PCs generally use UEFI firmware, although menus and support pages may still call the setup utility BIOS. A setting that helps protect the startup chain is not automatically a setting that reduces boot time, and a setting that skips hardware checks is not a security control.

What you want Feature to investigate What it does What the available evidence supports
Protect the startup process Secure Boot UEFI checks signatures on boot software and allows trusted software to start. It is a security feature, not a general speed switch.
Resume Windows more quickly Windows Fast Startup Windows uses hibernation infrastructure to save and restore system state during shutdown and startup. It is separate from a firmware menu option labelled Fast Boot.
Reduce firmware initialization time Vendor-specific firmware Fast Boot The manufacturer decides which startup checks or initialization steps are shortened or skipped. A specific time saving cannot be promised for your PC.
Change which device starts first Boot order UEFI chooses the first eligible drive or other boot device. It changes startup selection, not necessarily startup speed, and can cause recovery prompts or a failure to find Windows.

If you cannot name the exact setting and the outcome you want, do not change a value yet. Read the computer or motherboard maker’s documentation for your model first.

Should you turn on Secure Boot?

Secure Boot is generally the setting to examine when the concern is startup security. Microsoft describes it as a way to help protect the startup process: UEFI verifies signatures on boot software and permits trusted software to run. That helps prevent untrusted or altered boot components from loading before the operating system.

What Secure Boot changes

When enabled and correctly configured, Secure Boot establishes a trust check during the earliest part of startup. The firmware evaluates the boot software’s signature against trusted keys stored in the firmware environment. If the software is not accepted, startup can stop with an error instead of handing control to it.

This is not a promise that every file on the PC is safe, nor does it replace operating-system updates, account protection, disk encryption or malware defenses. It is specifically about the boot path.

Why it is not a universal toggle

Secure Boot behavior depends on the PC’s firmware, whether Windows is installed for UEFI or an older compatibility mode, the operating systems installed, and any custom boot loaders. A normal single-operating-system installation may work without further changes, while a dual-boot or customized system can require documented adjustments.

Do not switch boot mode and Secure Boot settings at random. A system installed in one mode may stop booting if the firmware is changed to another mode without preparing the installation. If you use more than one operating system, a custom boot manager, unusual drivers or recovery software, consult both the operating-system documentation and the PC or motherboard maker before changing Secure Boot.

Will changing BIOS settings make Windows boot faster?

There is no reliable, universal number of seconds to expect from a firmware change. UEFI can support faster boot and resume behavior as a platform, but the available Microsoft guidance does not quantify the saving produced by a particular option on an individual machine. Storage speed, memory training, connected hardware, firmware version, drivers and the operating system all affect the result.

Windows Fast Startup is not firmware Fast Boot

Windows Fast Startup uses hibernation infrastructure. During a supported shutdown, Windows saves part of the system state so that it can restore that state at the next start. A firmware setting labelled Fast Boot is controlled by the UEFI implementation and may alter hardware initialization or startup checks before Windows loads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The similar names cause confusion. Turning on Windows Fast Startup does not automatically enable a firmware Fast Boot option, and changing a firmware option does not configure Windows Fast Startup. Check which screen contains the setting before deciding what it will do.

Why vendor Fast Boot options need caution

“Fast Boot” is not one standardized behavior. One manufacturer may shorten device detection; another may defer or skip checks that are useful when troubleshooting. A setting can also make it harder to enter firmware setup because the machine spends less time waiting for an entry-key press.

Because the implementation is model-specific, treat any claimed improvement as a possibility rather than a guarantee. Measure the complete startup experience after making one documented change, and be prepared to reverse it if a keyboard, external drive or other device is no longer detected as expected.

Prepare before changing firmware

Firmware changes are reversible in many cases, but recovery is easier when you prepare first. Complete these checks before changing Secure Boot, boot order, TPM-related settings or other measured-boot options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Locate the BitLocker recovery key

A change to boot order or firmware configuration can cause Windows to request the BitLocker recovery key. This is a security response: the encrypted drive detects that the startup measurements or boot path changed. Do not begin until you can retrieve the recovery key associated with the encrypted installation.

If the PC belongs to an organization, its administrator may control the key and the recovery process. A personal PC may have the key stored with the account or in another location chosen when encryption was configured. Verify access rather than assuming you will be able to find it after a reboot.

2. Record the current configuration

Photograph or write down the current values for boot mode, boot order, Secure Boot, TPM-related options and any setting you intend to change. Record the existing firmware version as well. This gives you a known configuration to restore if Windows no longer starts or a peripheral behaves differently.

3. Check the operating-system arrangement

  • Confirm whether the PC runs one operating system or a dual-boot arrangement.
  • Identify whether the installation uses UEFI mode or an older compatibility mode.
  • Note any custom boot loader, disk-encryption setup or specialized recovery software.
  • Check the manufacturer’s support page or manual for the exact model and firmware version.

4. Use only the manufacturer’s firmware-update instructions

If the manufacturer says a firmware update is required for Secure Boot servicing or compatibility, use that maker’s instructions. Do not install a firmware image intended for another model, interrupt power during the update, or manually replace Secure Boot keys without a specific documented reason.

How to enter UEFI settings without guessing

Entry keys and menu names vary by manufacturer and model, so there is no universal key combination that is safe to recommend. Many systems offer a route through Windows Recovery instead of requiring you to catch a key press during startup.

Use Windows Recovery when the option is available

On supported Windows installations, open the recovery options in Windows, choose the advanced startup option to restart, then select the troubleshooting and advanced-options path that leads to UEFI Firmware Settings and confirm the restart. The exact labels can differ by Windows edition, update level and device.

If UEFI Firmware Settings is not listed, do not substitute a random boot-mode change. Use the PC or motherboard maker’s documented method for entering setup. The manufacturer’s instructions should also identify the relevant menu and explain whether a setting requires a save-and-restart action.

Change one setting at a time

  1. Enter the documented firmware setup screen.
  2. Verify that the model and current firmware version match your records.
  3. Change only the setting tied to your stated goal.
  4. Save the change using the menu’s documented command, then restart.
  5. Confirm that Windows starts, the expected drive is selected and essential devices work.
  6. If the result is worse, return to firmware setup and restore the recorded value.

A practical decision guide

Situation Best next step Do not assume
You want stronger startup protection on a supported Windows PC. Check Secure Boot status, boot mode and the manufacturer’s guidance. Enable it only when the installed operating-system arrangement supports it. That enabling it will make the PC boot faster.
You want a shorter power-on sequence. Separate Windows Fast Startup from firmware Fast Boot, then read the model-specific description and test one change. That every Fast Boot option behaves the same or saves a fixed number of seconds.
You are changing boot order to start from a recovery or installation drive. Record the original order and confirm the BitLocker recovery key first. That boot-order changes are harmless because they do not alter Windows files.
You use dual boot or a custom loader. Follow instructions for both the operating system and the device firmware before changing Secure Boot or boot mode. That a setting suitable for a standard Windows installation will work for your configuration.
Windows asks for BitLocker recovery after the change. Use the verified recovery key, then review and restore the firmware setting if the prompt was unexpected. That repeated reboots will remove the prompt or repair the underlying configuration.

Secure Boot certificate servicing in 2026

Secure Boot is also subject to certificate maintenance. Microsoft says certificates originally issued in 2011 begin expiring in June 2026. Supported Windows versions receive the relevant updates automatically, but the exact process can depend on Windows support status and the device firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, follow current Windows and OEM instructions if your PC reports a Secure Boot certificate or servicing issue. Do not manually delete, add or replace firmware keys simply because a certificate date is approaching. Microsoft’s current troubleshooting guidance notes that firmware limitations may require an update from the PC manufacturer.

What to do when startup breaks after a change

Windows cannot find a boot device

Return to UEFI setup using the documented method and compare the boot mode and boot order with your notes. Restore the original Windows boot entry and mode. If the drive is not detected at all, stop changing values and use the manufacturer’s recovery guidance.

Secure Boot reports an error

Do not repeatedly toggle unrelated options. Check whether the operating system was installed for the current boot mode, whether a custom loader is present and whether the PC maker lists a firmware update or a Secure Boot compatibility note. A dual-boot or customized installation may need a planned migration rather than a simple switch.

A BitLocker recovery prompt appears

Enter the recovery key you verified before the change. Once Windows starts, review what changed and decide whether the new configuration is necessary. If the key is unavailable, contact the account administrator or recovery-key provider before making further firmware changes; repeated attempts can leave you with fewer diagnostic clues.

You can no longer enter firmware setup easily

A firmware Fast Boot option may shorten the time available for an entry key. Use Windows Recovery’s UEFI Firmware Settings route when available, or follow the model-specific method in the manufacturer’s manual. Avoid interrupting power as a substitute for a documented recovery procedure.

The safest default

Leave firmware settings at their documented defaults unless you have a defined reason to change one. For security, investigate Secure Boot in the context of your boot mode and operating-system setup. For speed, first identify whether the delay is in Windows or in firmware and distinguish Windows Fast Startup from a vendor’s Fast Boot option. In either case, preserve the current configuration and BitLocker recovery key before you save a change.
