Best Dolby Atmos Settings for a Samsung Soundbar (TV, eARC and Source Setup)

Use HDMI ARC/eARC, set eARC to Auto and digital output to Auto or Pass-Through, configure the source for bitstream, and verify “DOLBY ATMOS” on the bar.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Samsung TV and Samsung Dolby Atmos soundbar, use HDMI from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port. In the TV’s sound settings, set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto, set Digital Output Audio Format to Auto or Pass-Through (some models also offer Dolby Digital), and enable Dolby Atmos or Dolby Atmos Compatibility when available. The exact labels vary by model, software version and region, so confirm the final choices in your TV’s manual.

The source must contain an Atmos soundtrack and send it as bitstream, unprocessed or “No Encoding.” When the signal is working, the soundbar display shows DOLBY ATMOS. Optical and Bluetooth are not Atmos paths for the formats listed by Samsung; HDMI ARC/eARC is the dependable connection.

The recommended signal path

Dolby Atmos is a format, not a surround effect preset. The TV, soundbar, cable, source device and program must all pass the same compatible signal. Use this order when setting up:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the exact TV and soundbar models support Dolby Atmos.
  2. Connect the TV’s socket marked ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s matching socket.
  3. Select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output.
  4. Set eARC and digital output options deliberately rather than relying on a stereo or PCM default.
  5. Configure a disc player, console or streaming box for bitstream/unprocessed output.
  6. Play a title that actually includes Dolby Atmos and check the soundbar display.

Samsung’s US Dolby Atmos instructions and Philippines support guide describe this workflow, while Samsung notes that menu names and available choices differ by TV model and region.

Check compatibility before changing settings

Verify both devices

Do not assume Atmos support from the Samsung name alone. Check the model-specific specifications or manuals for the TV and soundbar. A TV may support Atmos decoding but lack eARC, while a soundbar may accept Atmos only through a particular HDMI input. The source device also needs Atmos-capable output.

Verify the program

The film, episode, game or disc must carry an Atmos track. A normal stereo or 5.1 title cannot be turned into genuine Atmos by selecting a sound mode. If an app offers multiple audio tracks, choose the one labelled Dolby Atmos.

Use the correct cable and sockets

For HDMI setup, Samsung recommends a High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet HDMI cable. Connect it to the ports labelled ARC/eARC at both ends; an ordinary HDMI input on the TV will not return TV audio to the bar. A cable cannot add Atmos capability to hardware that does not support the format.

Connect the TV and soundbar

  1. Turn off the TV and soundbar.
  2. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the other into the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port.
  3. Turn both devices on and wait for the TV to recognize the soundbar.
  4. On the TV, open Settings > Sound > Sound Output and select the connected soundbar. Samsung says the exact path can vary with model and software.
  5. If the devices do not discover one another, enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) on the Samsung TV, then power-cycle both units and repeat the port check.

Samsung’s UK soundbar setup table identifies HDMI as the route for Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Atmos, and HDMI-eARC as the route for Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Atmos.

Set the Samsung TV’s audio options

Open the TV’s expert audio menu, usually Settings > Sound > Expert Settings. Select the closest available option when your firmware uses different wording.

TV option Recommended choice Why it matters
HDMI eARC Mode Auto, when present Lets the TV negotiate the higher-bandwidth eARC connection with a compatible soundbar.
Digital Output Audio Format Auto or Pass-Through Preserves a compatible source signal instead of forcing a lower-format conversion. Samsung US also documents Dolby Digital as an available choice on some models.
Dolby Atmos / Dolby Atmos Compatibility On, if the menu provides it Allows the TV to send Atmos when the TV, source and soundbar support it.
Sound Output The HDMI-connected soundbar Routes TV and app audio to the bar rather than the TV speakers.

Samsung’s regional documentation is not identical: the US support page lists Dolby Digital or Auto for Digital Output Audio Format, while the Philippines page recommends Auto or Pass-Through and eARC Mode Auto. Treat those as model-dependent labels, not competing universal rules. If a setting is absent, use the model’s manual and verify the result from the bar’s display.

Samsung’s Canadian sound-settings reference also warns that options depend on the TV model, year, activated features, software and geography.

What Auto, Pass-Through and Dolby Digital mean in practice

Auto asks the television to choose a compatible output based on the connected equipment and incoming signal. It is the sensible first choice when the TV and soundbar are modern Samsung models and the menu offers it.

Pass-Through tells the TV to forward the source signal rather than decode and repackage it where that option is supported. It can be useful with an external player, console or streaming box, but not every TV exposes it and some models use different wording. If Pass-Through is missing, do not treat that as a fault; use Auto or the documented Dolby Digital choice and test the bar’s display.

Dolby Digital is an option on some Samsung TVs, particularly in regional menus documented by Samsung US. It may be suitable for compatible compressed formats, but it is not a universal replacement for eARC or for an Atmos-capable pass-through path. The final test is whether the soundbar identifies the Atmos stream, not which label sounds most advanced.

Why PCM can be misleading

PCM can produce perfectly audible sound while removing the bitstream metadata the bar needs to identify Atmos. If the bar reports PCM, stereo or another lower format, change the source player and TV output to bitstream, unprocessed or pass-through before changing speaker modes. Do not assume that hearing surround-like audio means genuine Atmos is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure a Blu-ray player, console or streaming device

  1. Open the source device’s audio settings.
  2. Choose Bitstream, Unprocessed, Passthrough or No Encoding, depending on the device’s terminology.
  3. Turn off Secondary Audio or a similar mixing option when the player offers it. Secondary audio can force the player to decode or remix the primary track.
  4. For a disc or game, select the Atmos soundtrack in the title’s audio menu.
  5. Connect the source according to the capabilities in its manual. If it is connected directly to the TV, the TV must be able to pass that Atmos format over ARC/eARC.

Samsung states that the source has to contain Atmos and that an external player should send bitstream or unprocessed audio. A PCM or stereo setting may produce sound while preventing the bar from receiving the Atmos metadata.

Built-in TV apps versus external devices

For a built-in TV app, the TV is the source, so the TV’s digital-output and eARC settings are the critical controls. For a console, Blu-ray player or streaming box, there is an additional audio menu that can override the TV’s preferred format. Test each input separately: one app working does not prove that every HDMI device is configured correctly.

If a source is connected directly to the soundbar, use the soundbar’s documented HDMI input and connect the bar’s ARC/eARC output to the TV. If it is connected to the TV instead, the TV must support forwarding the source’s Atmos format. The correct wiring depends on the capabilities listed for all three devices; do not move cables randomly without checking those specifications.

Confirm that Atmos is actually active

Start known Atmos content and watch the soundbar’s front display. Samsung says it will show DOLBY ATMOS when it detects Atmos media. This confirmation is more reliable than choosing a named sound mode in the remote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

While Atmos is active, Samsung says the soundbar’s sound-effect modes are unavailable. That is expected: the bar is processing the incoming Atmos mix rather than applying a selectable Adaptive, Surround or similar preset. If the display shows another format, troubleshoot the signal path instead of repeatedly changing sound modes.

Use a repeatable test

Choose one title known to include Atmos, start playback from the beginning, and wait several seconds for the format to lock. Note the exact app or input, selected soundtrack and display message. Then test another source only after the first path works. This isolates whether the problem is the title, source device, TV output or HDMI link.

ARC versus eARC: which connection is appropriate?

Connection Format information in Samsung’s table Practical implication
HDMI ARC Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Atmos, is listed for HDMI. Can carry Atmos when the TV, soundbar and source support that compressed path.
HDMI eARC Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Atmos, is listed for HDMI-eARC; Dolby Digital Plus is also listed. Use eARC when all devices support it and you need the higher-bandwidth lossless path.
Optical Atmos is not listed; Samsung notes that optical cannot carry some higher-bitrate formats such as Dolby Digital Plus. Do not use optical for an Atmos setup.
Bluetooth Atmos formats are not listed for Bluetooth. Bluetooth is not a substitute for the HDMI Atmos connection.

The available result is limited by the weakest component. An eARC TV cannot make an ARC-only soundbar accept TrueHD Atmos, and an Atmos soundbar cannot recover metadata that a source device has converted to stereo.

Do you need a new HDMI cable?

Use the High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet class Samsung recommends for HDMI soundbar setup, and check the length and port requirements of your equipment. Replace a suspect cable if the connection drops, but do not expect a premium cable to create Atmos support in an incompatible TV, source or soundbar. Cable quality matters for a stable link; it does not change the capabilities printed in the devices’ specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you enable SpaceFit Sound?

SpaceFit Sound is an optional Samsung room-calibration feature, not a prerequisite for Dolby Atmos. On supported TV and soundbar combinations it analyzes the listening environment and adjusts the system’s response. Samsung notes that compatibility varies by model and region and that environmental characteristics, including the ceiling, can affect the result.

If your exact combination supports it and you want calibration, use the soundbar remote’s Sound Control button until SpaceFit Sound appears, then press Up to turn it on. Samsung’s Australia support page contains an Australia-specific compatibility list; check your local model documentation before looking for the option.

When to leave it off

  • The TV or soundbar does not list SpaceFit Sound for your model.
  • You are troubleshooting basic HDMI or Atmos detection; calibration cannot repair a missing signal.
  • You prefer the uncalibrated response and have no room-placement problem to correct.

Run calibration after the HDMI format is confirmed, not before. Otherwise a change in room processing can make listening tests inconsistent while the underlying connection problem remains.

Placement and listening checks after the signal works

Once the display confirms Atmos, keep the bar centered under the TV and avoid blocking its upward-firing openings if your model has them. Leave the room arrangement unchanged while comparing settings so you are judging the same signal path. Samsung’s support material does not define one universal equalizer curve, speaker distance or volume level; those controls depend on the model, seating position, ceiling and room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust only one control at a time. First confirm the format, then consider room calibration, channel levels or personal tonal preferences. If dialogue is unclear or height effects seem weak, verify placement and the selected soundtrack before assuming a different effect preset is needed. Atmos playback may deliberately disable those presets.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The display never says “DOLBY ATMOS”

  • Confirm that the title or game includes an Atmos track and that the correct track is selected.
  • Check that the TV’s Sound Output is the HDMI soundbar, not TV Speaker or Bluetooth.
  • Set Digital Output Audio Format to Auto or Pass-Through, or use the model’s documented Dolby Digital option.
  • Set the source player to bitstream, unprocessed or No Encoding and disable Secondary Audio.
  • Verify that both HDMI plugs are in the ARC/eARC-labelled ports and that the cable meets Samsung’s recommended High Speed class.
  • Confirm that the TV and soundbar models support Atmos over the connection you are using.

The TV and soundbar do not connect at all

  1. Enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) on the Samsung TV.
  2. Unplug the HDMI cable, check for bent or loose connectors, and reconnect it to the two ARC/eARC ports.
  3. Turn off both devices, disconnect power briefly, then restart the TV before the soundbar.
  4. Reopen Settings > Sound > Sound Output and select the bar again.
  5. Try another suitable High Speed HDMI cable if the connection repeatedly drops.

There is sound, but it is stereo or a lower format

Sound alone proves only that some audio is passing. Recheck the source’s output mode and the title’s soundtrack, then test with a known Atmos program. A TV or player that outputs PCM may need to be changed to bitstream or passthrough. If the source is connected through a component that does not pass the required format, connect it through the documented HDMI path instead.

The menus in this guide are missing

Samsung changes labels and availability by model year, software version, enabled features and country. Search the exact model number in Samsung’s support documentation and use the closest equivalent option. Do not force a setting that your TV does not provide; the soundbar’s Atmos indicator is the final confirmation.

Atmos works intermittently

  • Check whether only certain apps or inputs fail; that points to a source-specific audio setting.
  • Keep Anynet+ enabled for HDMI device control.
  • Reseat the cable and test a different certified High Speed cable.
  • Ensure the TV, source and bar are all set for compatible output rather than one device forcing PCM.
  • Check whether the failure occurs after changing inputs, waking the TV or resuming playback; reselecting the HDMI soundbar can reveal a device-handshake issue.

Settings that are not universal Atmos requirements

Adaptive, Surround and other sound modes

Do not add a sound-effect preset to the setup checklist. Atmos is detected automatically, and Samsung makes those effect modes unavailable while Atmos is active.

Q-Symphony

Q-Symphony is a separate Samsung TV/soundbar feature with its own model and connection requirements. The available support information does not establish it as a universal Atmos optimization, so treat it as optional and follow the documentation for your specific pair.

Equalizer, speaker distance and level values

There is no single Samsung setting for these controls that can be called “best” across rooms and models. Placement, ceiling height, seating position and the bar’s speaker layout all change the result. Start with correct format detection and connection; adjust room-specific controls only after Atmos is confirmed.

Optical, Bluetooth and analog fallbacks

These connections may be useful for ordinary audio, but they are not substitutes for the HDMI Atmos path documented by Samsung. Switching to optical can restore basic sound while quietly removing Dolby Digital Plus or other higher-bitrate formats. Use it only when Atmos is not required.

A reliable final checklist

  • TV and soundbar models both support Dolby Atmos.
  • HDMI cable runs from TV ARC/eARC to soundbar ARC/eARC.
  • Sound Output selects the soundbar.
  • HDMI eARC Mode is Auto where available.
  • Digital Output Audio Format is Auto or Pass-Through, using the model’s documented alternative if necessary.
  • Dolby Atmos or Dolby Atmos Compatibility is enabled when offered.
  • External players use bitstream, unprocessed or No Encoding output.
  • Secondary Audio is disabled when it interferes with the primary track.
  • The program itself carries Dolby Atmos.
  • The soundbar display reads “DOLBY ATMOS.”

Once those conditions are met, leave the bar’s sound-effect presets alone during Atmos playback. SpaceFit Sound can be added only when your exact model combination supports it and you want its room-calibration behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Dolby Atmos settings for a Samsung soundbar?

Connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar, set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto, choose Auto or Pass-Through for Digital Output Audio Format, enable Dolby Atmos compatibility when offered, and set external players to bitstream or unprocessed output. Confirm that the bar displays “DOLBY ATMOS.”

Is eARC required for Dolby Atmos?

Not for every Atmos stream. Samsung lists compressed Dolby Digital Plus Atmos over HDMI, including ARC-capable paths, while uncompressed Dolby TrueHD Atmos is listed for HDMI-eARC. Use eARC when the TV, soundbar and source all support it and you need that higher-bandwidth format.

Why does my Samsung soundbar play sound but not show Dolby Atmos?

The title may not contain Atmos, the source may be set to PCM or stereo, Secondary Audio may be mixing the track, or the HDMI cable and ports may be wrong. Recheck the source soundtrack, bitstream setting, TV output, ARC/eARC ports and device compatibility.

Can optical or Bluetooth carry Dolby Atmos to a Samsung soundbar?

Samsung’s format table does not list Atmos over optical or Bluetooth. Optical also cannot carry some higher-bitrate formats such as Dolby Digital Plus. Use HDMI ARC/eARC for an Atmos setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should Digital Output Audio Format be Auto or Pass-Through?

Both labels are used in Samsung documentation, depending on model and region. Start with Auto or Pass-Through as available, then verify the result on the soundbar display. Some models document Dolby Digital as an additional choice.

Should I use Adaptive or Surround mode with Atmos?

No extra effect preset is required. Samsung says the soundbar detects Atmos automatically and its sound-effect modes are unavailable while Atmos is active.

Is SpaceFit Sound necessary for Atmos?

No. SpaceFit Sound is optional room calibration. Enable it only when your exact TV and soundbar combination supports it and you want its adjustments; it cannot repair a missing Atmos signal.

Why do Samsung menu names differ from this guide?

Samsung varies settings by TV model, model year, software version, enabled features and geography. Use the exact model’s manual and select the closest equivalent option rather than forcing a setting that is absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The best Samsung Dolby Atmos setup is a verified HDMI ARC/eARC path, not a particular sound-effect preset. Use the matching ARC/eARC ports, set eARC to Auto where available, choose Auto or Pass-Through for digital output, enable Atmos compatibility, and send external audio as bitstream or unprocessed. Play a title that includes Atmos and trust the soundbar’s “DOLBY ATMOS” display as confirmation. Add SpaceFit Sound only if your specific models support it and you want room calibration.
