Usually, yes: an emulator that runs PlayStation 3 games needs the game content and PS3 system software as separate components. The official firmware file identified in RPCS3 setup guidance is Sony’s PS3UPDAT.PUP, not a generic file called a “PS3 BIOS.” But an Android app’s name or store listing does not establish that it can run PS3 games, and you should confirm the current instructions for the specific emulator before preparing files.
What do you need to run a PS3 game in an emulator?
Think of the setup as three separate parts: the emulator application, PS3 system firmware, and the game itself. They are not interchangeable. The emulator is the software that attempts to reproduce the console; firmware supplies system software expected by some games and emulator functions; game files contain the particular title you want to run.

So the direct answer to “Do I need game files or firmware?” is that they serve different purposes; for the RPCS3 guidance described here, both official firmware and legitimately owned game dumps are part of setup. Requirements may differ by emulator, and the Android-specific app landscape has not been verified well enough to make that a universal claim about every app. Check the emulator’s own current documentation.
Is PS3 firmware the same thing as a BIOS?
Not in the terminology used by Sony’s PS3 update process. “BIOS” is often used loosely online to mean console system software, but Sony’s official update artifact is the PS3 system software update file named PS3UPDAT.PUP. That is the relevant file identified by the setup guidance here—not a separately named generic PS3 BIOS download.

Use the name in the emulator’s official instructions rather than searching for a “PS3 BIOS” package from an unfamiliar download site. The label alone does not tell you whether a file is authentic, current, or appropriate for that emulator. Sony’s US PlayStation support page identifies its official update source and warns users not to update with data from another source.
How do you get the official PS3 update file?
Sony’s US support page lists PS3 system software update 4.93. For its PC/Mac USB method, Sony specifies a FAT32-formatted USB drive, a folder path of PS3/UPDATE, and the filename PS3UPDAT.PUP. This describes Sony’s console update-file handling; it is not, by itself, a complete Android emulator installation guide.

- Start at Sony’s official PlayStation support page. Use Sony’s own update data rather than a third-party firmware download. Sony says not to use update data from another source.
- Prepare a USB drive if you need one for transfer. The Sony PC/Mac method calls for FAT32. Create the folders
PS3and, inside it,UPDATE. - Save the update file with the specified name. Sony identifies it as
PS3UPDAT.PUPinsidePS3/UPDATE. Keep the filename and folder structure exact when following Sony’s method. - Follow the emulator’s own firmware-installation instructions. The Sony page explains the official source and console-oriented file handling, but emulator applications can have different import steps. Do not assume that a file copied to USB is automatically installed in an Android emulator.
The Sony page’s listed version can change, so check the current official page when obtaining the file. An optional USB flash drive may make file transfer easier; it is not a requirement for emulation in itself, and it does not provide firmware or game content.

Do not treat an app’s name, screenshots, or store description as proof of PS3 emulation. In a blog post dated December 9, 2024, the RPCS3 project warned about scam apps claiming to be PS3 emulators and said it knew of no other PS3 emulator that could run PS3 games. That is a dated statement from the project, not confirmation of the Android emulator landscape in October 2026. It does not establish that a particular Android app is genuine or currently works.

Before installing an app or preparing game files, check the project behind it rather than relying on a search result or a third-party listing. Look for an official release source, current maintenance, device and game compatibility information, and specific setup instructions. A claim that an app supports a game is not the same as evidence that it runs on your Android device.
Checks to make before trusting an Android emulator claim
- Official release source: Can you find a project-controlled site or release page that identifies the app and its current build?
- Maintenance and device support: Does the project provide current information for your Android version and device hardware, including CPU and GPU compatibility?
- Per-game compatibility: Is there a published compatibility record for the particular PS3 title, rather than only a general claim that the emulator runs PS3 games?
- Clear file requirements: Does the project explain whether it requires official system firmware, a game dump, or title-specific files or licenses?
- Consistent instructions: Do the app’s setup instructions agree with the project’s official documentation, rather than asking you to fetch unexplained files from unrelated sites?
These are verification checks, not claims that a currently maintained Android project has passed them. No current Android project or device-wide compatibility record is established here. If the app’s provenance or requirements are unclear, do not provide it with files or permissions on the assumption that its PS3 claim is genuine.

What is the difference between firmware, a game dump, and a USB drive?
These items solve different problems, which is why substituting one for another does not complete setup:

- Firmware is the PS3 system software update. The Sony update file is
PS3UPDAT.PUP. - A game dump is the game content for a title you legally own, as described in RPCS3 setup guidance. It is not included in the firmware update.
- A USB drive is optional transfer equipment for moving files. Sony’s PC/Mac method specifies FAT32 and the
PS3/UPDATEfolder for its update file. A USB drive does not create or supply the firmware or game.
Keep the distinction in mind when troubleshooting: successfully downloading firmware does not mean you have a game, and having game content does not prove that the emulator has the system software it requires.

What should you do if setup does not work?
Start with the point of failure rather than downloading additional files from random sources. If the emulator cannot identify firmware, check that the file came from Sony and that you followed the emulator’s documented import procedure. The Sony folder path and USB procedure explain how to handle its update file for the console method; they do not guarantee that a particular emulator accepts the file in the same way.
If firmware is recognized but a title does not appear or launch, check that you have the correct game content and that it was obtained and prepared according to the emulator’s official guidance. Then check whether the project publishes compatibility information for that exact title and your device. A general emulator listing cannot establish game-specific support.
If an app asks for a file called “PS3 BIOS” without explaining its origin, purpose, or how it relates to Sony’s update file, pause and verify the request with the project’s official documentation. Do not treat unfamiliar downloads, renamed files, or an app’s marketing description as proof that the file is official or necessary.
What the available instructions do—and do not—tell you
The Sony support information establishes an official source for PS3 system software, lists update 4.93, and specifies the PC/Mac FAT32 USB folder and filename. RPCS3 setup guidance surfaced here says to use official PS3 firmware and legally owned game dumps. Those details answer the distinction between firmware and game content, but they do not provide a complete, verified Android setup procedure.
In particular, the current maintenance status and device compatibility of an Android PS3 emulator, its exact firmware-import steps, and the compatibility of individual games are not established here. Treat those as app- and device-specific questions to verify with the emulator project’s current official materials, not as facts inferred from an app name or from instructions written for a different platform.
