Short answer: Buy now if you need a console soon and the exact model’s delivered price fits your budget. If you can wait, waiting for a verified discount is sensible—but there is no reliable evidence for when the next PS5 or Xbox hardware sale will happen or how large it will be. Compare the exact configuration, stock, tax, delivery, return terms and certified-refurbished options before paying.
What the decision looks like in October 2026
US console prices are high enough that timing matters. Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. A Microsoft Store snapshot lists Xbox Series X at $649.99 and Xbox Series S 1 TB at $449.99. Those are different product classes: a disc-capable, 4K-focused Series X is not a direct substitute for a digital-only Series S.

Microsoft also announced that, effective August 1, 2026, US prices would rise by $100 for 512 GB Xbox models and $150 for 1 TB models. Xbox Wire attributed the move to storage and memory costs, saying those costs had risen by more than 2.5 times and that Microsoft expected another doubling by fall 2027. That explanation and outlook are Microsoft’s statements, not an independent price forecast. The announcement does not, by itself, establish the resulting price of every model or predict a sale.

Use the price type shown in the table when comparing offers. Sony’s recommended retail price (RRP) is a manufacturer reference; a live store listing is what that retailer is asking at that moment.

The $599, $649 and $899 PlayStation Direct amounts are storefront snapshots, while Sony’s RRP figures are announced recommended prices. The small differences are normal reasons to check the final cart rather than relying on a headline number. Microsoft’s refurbished consoles are described by the company as available for up to $100 off MSRP; the exact saving depends on model and listing.
Choose the platform before you chase a discount
Start with the games you actually intend to play
Console exclusives, friends’ platforms, subscription libraries and backward compatibility usually matter more than a temporary price difference. Make a list of the games you expect to play in the next two years and verify the platform and edition for each one. A $50 saving is not useful if it leaves you buying a second console or repurchasing games.

Xbox says Series X|S supports thousands of games across four Xbox generations, along with compatible Xbox One controllers and accessories. That is Xbox’s platform statement; check compatibility for a specific game or accessory before assuming it works. PlayStation game availability likewise varies by title and edition, so verify the games that matter to you rather than treating either platform as universally interchangeable.
Decide whether physical discs matter
A disc drive lets you use physical games, lend or resell discs where permitted, play used copies and use the console as a UHD Blu-ray player when the model supports it. A digital-only console requires downloads and ties purchases to the platform account. Digital sales can be convenient, but you cannot create a used-disc option later without buying a compatible drive or replacing the console.
Xbox Series X is available in configurations with a UHD Blu-ray disc drive. Series S is designed for disc-free gaming. The standard PS5 includes a disc-drive configuration, while the PS5 Digital Edition does not; confirm the exact bundle because model revisions and optional drives can change what is in the box.

Match the console to your display
Microsoft describes Series X as supporting native 4K and Series S as targeting 1440p with upscaling to 4K. Both are listed as supporting frame rates up to 120 frames per second, subject to the game and display, and both support expandable custom storage. A 4K television with HDMI features that support high refresh rates can make the higher-end model more worthwhile; on a basic 1080p screen, the visual difference may be less important than price and storage.

Modern games can consume tens or more than 100 GB each. The PS5 Digital Edition storefront listing specifies 825 GB, while the listed PS5 and PS5 Pro configurations specify 1 TB and 2 TB respectively. Xbox Series S is sold in 512 GB and 1 TB configurations, and Microsoft lists a dedicated Storage Expansion Card as an add-on. Compare usable space, expansion cost and the number of games you keep installed. A cheaper 512 GB or 825 GB model can lose its advantage if you immediately need expansion storage.
When buying now is rational
You have an immediate use case
Buy now when a specific game, gift date, travel plan or broken console makes delay costly. Set a maximum delivered price first, then purchase an in-stock listing that meets it. Include sales tax, shipping, an optional stand or drive, and any storage expansion in that ceiling.
The exact configuration is already at your target price
Do not wait for a theoretical sale if a verified offer already beats your target after tax and delivery. Record the model name, storage size and whether a disc drive is included. Retailers can use similar names for materially different editions.
You find a worthwhile certified-refurbished unit
Manufacturer-store refurbished listings can lower the entry price: the cited snapshots show a refurbished slim PS5 Digital Edition at $499, a refurbished slim PS5 at $549, a refurbished Xbox Series S at $329.99 and a refurbished Xbox Series X 1 TB Digital Edition at $499.99. Check the unit’s condition grade, included accessories, warranty length, return window and stock status. A lower price is not a bargain if the return policy or coverage is materially worse than a new unit.

When waiting is the better choice
You do not need the console for a fixed date
Waiting preserves the option to buy a verified deal, a better bundle or a refurbished unit. It also gives you time to compare the exact model across retailers. There is no established date or size for the next PS5 or Xbox hardware discount, so treat waiting as flexibility—not a guaranteed saving.

Your target price is below today’s delivered cost
Write down a target for the exact model. Track that listing, including storage and drive configuration, and buy when an in-stock offer falls below the target after tax and shipping. Do not substitute a cheaper digital or lower-storage model unless you have consciously accepted its limitations.
You are relying on a named shopping event
Black Friday, holiday events and Prime-branded promotions often include games and accessories, but a calendar label does not guarantee a console markdown. The October 2026 promotion report cited above did not verify a console discount. Wait for the actual console price, not the event name.

- Identify the full configuration. Write the platform, model, storage capacity, disc-drive status and whether it is new or refurbished.
- Check the seller and stock. Confirm that the listing is sold by the retailer or manufacturer you intend to use and that it is available to ship. Microsoft’s snapshot included out-of-stock listings.
- Calculate the delivered total. Add sales tax, shipping, required accessories, an expansion drive or card, and any subscription you would buy immediately.
- Read return and warranty terms. For refurbished hardware, verify the condition description, warranty provider, return deadline and what accessories are included.
- Compare like with like. Match disc to disc, storage to storage and new to refurbished before declaring one platform cheaper.
- Check price-adjustment eligibility. Microsoft says qualifying purchases may be eligible for an adjustment within 60 days under stated terms. Eligibility depends on the product, market, stock, eligible retailer and other conditions, so do not assume every Microsoft Store or third-party purchase qualifies.
- Save the listing details. Keep the product page, price and order date so you can verify what you bought and whether a qualifying adjustment is available.
What market statistics can—and cannot—tell you
Circana US Retail Tracking Service data reported by Tom’s Hardware showed 2026 year-to-date US hardware unit sales through the end of August down 33% year over year for Xbox and 25% for PlayStation. These are unit-sales changes, not price measurements. They do not establish that a sale is imminent, how deep a discount might be, or whether a particular retailer will have stock.

Likewise, Microsoft’s explanation that storage and memory costs have risen, and its expectation of another doubling by fall 2027, are company statements. They may help explain pricing pressure, but they are not a promise that prices will rise continuously or that a future promotion will compensate for them.
US, UK, Europe and Japan price references
Sony’s April 2, 2026 recommended prices differ by region. The published figures are:

These are regional recommended prices, not a currency conversion or a promise that every retailer charges exactly those amounts. Taxes, bundles, import rules, warranty coverage and availability can change the final local cost. The Xbox figures above are US storefront snapshots and should not be exported to another market.
A practical decision rule
- Buy now: you need the console soon, have chosen the correct model, and the final in-stock price is at or below your target.
- Wait: your timing is flexible, today’s total exceeds your target, or you are willing to consider a certified-refurbished listing after checking its terms.
- Reconsider the model: the price gap disappears once you add storage, a drive or accessories, or the cheaper model does not support your games, discs or display needs.
The safest approach is to track one exact configuration rather than waiting for a vague “big sale.” A verified price on the model you actually want is more meaningful than a promotion on a different edition.
