Do You Need an Interactive Map on This Page?

A map library is justified by visitor interaction or geographic data needs—not simply by a place name. Compare static and interactive options against the page’s task, loading, implementation, and operating requirements.

No—not unless visitors need to do something with the map. If they only need to see where a place is, an address, an external map link, or a static map image may be enough. Consider an interactive map library when the page needs visitors to pan, zoom, select markers, filter locations, follow live location, or explore geographic data.

Start with the visitor’s task

A place name alone is not a reason to add a map library. Ask what a visitor should be able to accomplish on the page:

  • Find or recognize one location: show the address or provide a link to a map service.
  • See geographic context without interacting: consider a static image.
  • Explore locations or spatial data: evaluate an interactive map if visitors need to pan, zoom, inspect markers, filter results, compare features, or see updates.

The right choice depends on the actual task, data, and audience; without those details, no single approach is right for every page.

Can a static map image do the job?

A static map can provide location context without loading a JavaScript map. For example, Google’s Maps Static API returns an image generated from request parameters that can be used in an image element. It still requires authentication and a billing-enabled project, and is subject to quotas, pricing, and service terms. Check the current requirements for the service and deployment geography before choosing it.

A static image is a poor fit if visitors must interact with markers, change what is displayed, or explore data at different scales. For a single destination, however, an address or an external map link may be simpler still.

When is an interactive map library justified?

Use one when interaction or geographic data is central to the page rather than decorative. Before choosing a library or service, establish what the page must support:

  • Interaction: Do visitors need pan and zoom, selectable markers, filtering, or live updates?
  • Data: How many features are there, what geometries do they use, and how often does the data change? Does the page need vector data, or only a visual snapshot?
  • Loading: What JavaScript and CSS must be downloaded and parsed? Do visitors who never use or reach the map need to load it?
  • Implementation: Does the choice require an API key, a particular framework or bundler setup, worker files, content-security-policy changes, or additional accessibility work?
  • Operations and terms: Who supplies the map data or tiles? What authentication, billing, quota, attribution, licensing, and policy requirements apply?

These checks compare the real costs of keeping a map working, not just the size of a library or whether its source code is open.

How can you avoid loading map code unnecessarily?

For Google’s Maps JavaScript API, the libraries are not loaded until specifically requested. Importing a library when it is needed avoids requesting it for pages or features that do not use it, though the import adds loading and parsing work when requested.

Google’s add-a-map guide documents an API bootstrap and key, a map element and styles, and library loading and initialization. It describes the gmp-map web component as the preferred approach for new projects; creating a map in a div with JavaScript remains supported.

If the map should only exist when it becomes relevant to the visitor, make its creation conditional in your application. Google notes that its internal viewport-related loading optimizations can change without notice and should not be used to manage billing.

How should you compare interactive options?

First shortlist only options that meet the page’s interaction and data requirements. Then check their implementation and operational constraints. For example, MapLibre GL JS is an interactive vector-tile renderer; its documentation currently describes version 6 as ESM-only and covers worker-file and CSS setup for particular build environments. Those details depend on the version and bundler, so confirm the instructions for your own stack rather than applying a workaround universally.

Performance findings also depend on the workload and test environment. A 2025 International Cartographic Association abstract compared Leaflet, OpenLayers, Mapbox GL JS, and MapLibre GL JS using 24 GeoJSON datasets. Its local desktop tests averaged 10 runs per dataset—960 measured runs in total—using Chrome 131. Results varied with geometry and feature count: the abstract reports Leaflet and OpenLayers as generally strong at smaller feature counts in those tests, while other libraries led in some larger line or polygon cases. That controlled desktop study is not a universal ranking for current phones, production pages, or different datasets. Read the study abstract.

How to test the choice on your page

  1. Write down the visitor’s task. State what someone must be able to find, inspect, filter, or change.
  2. Try the simplest suitable option. Check whether an address, external map link, or static image meets that task before adding an interactive map.
  3. Use representative data. Test the actual number and types of features, along with expected updates—not a tiny sample if the page will handle a much larger dataset.
  4. Measure on target devices. Compare loading and rendering on the browsers and devices your visitors use, including devices less capable than a developer desktop.
  5. Check task completion and operating requirements. Confirm that visitors can complete the intended task, and account for keys, services, terms, attribution, billing, and ongoing data or tile sources.

Choose the least complex approach that reliably supports the visitor’s task. Add an interactive library when the page needs its capabilities, not simply because a location appears on it.
