A small website that changes rarely can often be checked with the Nu HTML Checker when needed. A project linter such as HTMLHint becomes more useful when you edit pages frequently, reuse templates, or want the same chosen checks to run repeatedly as you work. There is no evidence-based page-count cutoff; how often you make changes and what tools your site already uses matter more than its size.
What does an HTML linter do?
An HTML checker or linter examines markup and reports issues for you to review. Findings can point to unintended markup mistakes and potential parsing, compatibility, usability, accessibility, security, maintainability, performance, or scripting concerns. A report is a prompt to investigate, not proof that every issue has been found.

The Nu HTML Checker is an example of an on-demand checker. HTMLHint is a project tool you can install, configure with selected rules, and run against files from the command line. The Nu project describes its tool as a checker, not a pass/fail certification mechanism; its checks can evolve, so results may change as checks are added. Nu HTML Checker documentation

Use an on-demand checker when updates are occasional
If pages rarely change and you do not want to add project dependencies, checking them with the Nu HTML Checker when you edit them may be sufficient. W3C also documents a programmatic interface for the checker if you later want to automate it. W3C validator services and APIs

Add a project linter when repeatability saves effort
A configured linter is a better fit when you frequently edit HTML, maintain repeated pages or templates that can drift apart, or want consistent checks during development. If the site already uses Node.js, HTMLHint can make those checks repeatable without adding a separate checking step each time. If it does not, weigh the ongoing setup and maintenance of Node against a hosted checker or editor capability rather than introducing Node solely for linting.
Which checking workflow fits?
| Need | Practical fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Check a page occasionally without project dependencies | Nu HTML Checker | Offers online checking and a documented programmatic interface; it is not certification. Nu documentation; W3C API documentation |
| Run selected HTML rules as part of a repeatable project process | HTMLHint | Supports local installation, configurable rules, and command-line checking. Its current getting-started documentation requires Node.js 22 or later. HTMLHint getting started |
| Get feedback in the editor | HTMLHint VS Code extension | HTMLHint advertises an extension for real-time feedback. HTMLHint |
| Check a remote site or local running instance through an integration | webhint’s Nu HTML test | Its documentation describes testing remote websites and local server instances. The documentation search result is older, so verify current maintenance and compatibility before relying on it. webhint Nu HTML test |
Compare options by setup burden, repeatability, immediacy of feedback, rule customization, and fit with your existing toolchain. Start with an online check if you only need occasional feedback; automate checks when doing them repeatedly would prevent avoidable regressions or save recurring manual work.

How to add HTMLHint to a project
HTMLHint’s getting-started guide documents this basic project setup. Run these commands from the project’s directory:
npm install --save-dev htmlhintinstalls HTMLHint as a development dependency.npx htmlhint --initinitializes a.htmlhintrcconfiguration file.npx htmlhint "**/*.html"checks matching HTML files from the command line.
The guide’s example rules include checks for alt attributes, duplicate IDs, form labels, document language, page title, and main landmarks. Choose rules that suit the site and review the reported findings; a default or selected rule set is not a complete accessibility audit. HTMLHint getting started

Does valid HTML mean a site is accessible or good?
No. Passing HTML checks does not establish that a site is accessible, usable, or high quality. W3C WAI describes validation as one technique related to avoiding ambiguities, while emphasizing that its techniques are examples and are not required for WCAG conformance. W3C WAI technique G134
W3C’s validator help likewise says that a page passing validation does not mean W3C assesses it as a good page. W3C validator help Treat a clean report as one useful signal, then assess the actual content and user experience separately.
