Other reviewers are more positive about the single-player experience, so this is a divided set of early campaign impressions—not a settled verdict on the complete game, whose multiplayer was still awaiting assessment in the cited reviews.
What is Gears of War: E-Day?
Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person cover shooter developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios. Xbox describes it as an origin story set 14 years before the original Gears of War, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde begins its invasion. Tom’s Guide also identifies Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes as members of Bravo Squad. Xbox’s product page has the official premise and current platform information.

Windows Central characterizes the story’s tone as horror, war, survival, and desperation, with emphasis on the shock of the invasion and its effect on civilians. That framing makes E-Day a prequel about the human cost of the Locust emergence as well as a new chapter in the series’ combat.

What do the reviews say about the campaign?
The main disagreement is not whether the shooting works, but whether the campaign gives that combat enough variety and momentum. PC Gamer’s “good shooting, but the campaign’s a slog” assessment is its own review-in-progress judgment, not a consensus. GamesRadar+ found the single-player campaign satisfying, Tom’s Guide called E-Day an excellent series entry, and Windows Central praised its presentation and mobility while criticizing parts of its structure.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
| Review | What it praises | What it questions or has not covered |
|---|---|---|
| PC Gamer | Strong shooting; on Hardcore, the combat rewards looking for better ground. | Calls the campaign overstretched. Multiplayer was unavailable to the reviewer before release, and the review remained unscored. |
| GamesRadar+ | Andrew Brown gives the single-player campaign a positive verdict. | Brown says he will assess multiplayer before scoring the complete game. |
| Tom’s Guide | Calls E-Day an excellent entry in the series. | The cited assessment does not establish a full-game consensus. |
| Windows Central | Praises presentation and faster, more mobile combat. | Finds structural weaknesses and says large enemies can feel like bullet sponges. |
The reviews differ in taste and scope. A reader who values the feel of individual firefights may weigh the praise more heavily; someone looking for sustained campaign variety may find PC Gamer’s pacing concern more relevant. Windows Central’s criticism of the game’s open-but-not-actually-open structure is a separate concern from how the shooting feels.
How does the combat work?
The Coalition says E-Day was built from scratch while preserving the series’ cover-shooter identity. Its official gameplay update describes movement between cover as central, with support for more cover heights, types, and actions. It also says weapons use simulated projectile ballistics, meaning players may need to lead targets at range rather than expect every shot to travel instantly.

Windows Central reports faster sprinting, vaulting, and climbing, along with more dynamic use of low cover. Those are reviewer impressions rather than specifications. The same review’s complaint that large enemies can absorb too much ammunition illustrates a distinction between responsive movement and satisfying enemy feedback: mobility may improve how players reposition without making every encounter feel varied or efficient.

PC Gamer’s account of Hardcore combat offers a different angle on the cover system: seeking better ground repeatedly can make fights engaging, but the reviewer still found the campaign overstretched overall. Strong encounters do not automatically solve campaign pacing if the structure around them feels too long.

How long is the campaign?
GamesRadar+ reviewer Andrew Brown reports that he completed the five-act campaign in 16 hours, including most side objectives. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not an official duration or a reliable promise of how long every player will take. Optional content, difficulty, and individual pace can affect a personal run; the cited figure should be read specifically as Brown’s reported completion time.
Is this a complete review of the game?
No. The cited coverage is incomplete as a whole-game assessment. PC Gamer says multiplayer was unavailable before release and leaves its review unscored; GamesRadar+ likewise says its reviewer will return to assess multiplayer before scoring the complete game. Their campaign judgments can still help set expectations for the solo experience, but they do not establish how the complete package performs across modes.
