If you only need to connect more sources to one TV, choose an HDMI switch. If you also want a hub for audio processing and speaker connections, choose an AV receiver. Either way, “4K” alone does not guarantee support for 4K at 120Hz: check the full signal path, including the devices’ specific HDMI ports, cables and settings.
What each device does
HDMI switch: choose which source reaches the display
An HDMI switch adds source connections and routes one selected device to a display. It does not replace an AV receiver’s audio processing or speaker amplification. Denon’s AVS-3 setup illustrates this routing role: source devices connect to the switch, and the switch’s output connects to a compatible receiver input. AV receiver: route video and handle audio and speakers
An AV receiver can provide multiple HDMI inputs while also serving a system with receiver audio functions and speaker connections. Its port count and supported video formats depend on the model. For example, Denon’s AVR-S660H information sheet specifies six HDMI inputs, including three 8K inputs, and 4K/120Hz pass-through; the AVR-S960H product page describes six inputs and two outputs. For the add-a-switch arrangement, Denon’s AVS-3 instructions show source devices connected to the switch and the switch connected to an 8K-compatible receiver input, with input assignments configured as needed. Check compatibility across the whole HDMI chain
Write down the signal features you need before choosing a switch or receiver. Depending on your devices, these may include 4K/60Hz or 4K/120Hz, HDR format, variable refresh rate, audio format and eARC. Then verify each link in the chain: source, switch or receiver, display’s specific HDMI input, cable and configuration. A “4K” label by itself does not establish 4K/120Hz support.
- Check the exact ports. Not every HDMI input on a device necessarily supports the same formats. Denon’s AVR-X1700H guide designates HDMI inputs 4, 5 and 6 for compatible 8K sources. Follow the manual for your exact model and region. Denon AVR-X1700H 8K connection guide
- Match the cable to the required signal. For 8K or 4K/120Hz, Denon calls for a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. That cable alone cannot add support missing from a source, intermediary device or display. Denon AVR-X1700H 8K connection guide
- Check configuration as well as hardware. A compatible device may require a designated input or a particular signal-format setting. Use the model’s manual rather than assuming every port works identically.
Compare the details before buying
Use these questions to compare specific switches and receivers; the answer depends on your devices and requirements, not on whether a product is simply described as “4K.”

- How many sources do you need to connect, and how many suitable HDMI inputs does the device provide?
- Do you need 4K/60Hz, 4K/120Hz or another specific resolution and refresh rate?
- Which HDR, gaming and audio features must pass through?
- Do you need receiver audio processing, speaker connections or multiple HDMI outputs?
- Which ports and settings support the signal you need?
- Does the physical setup work for your equipment, and does the cost make sense for the functions you will use?
The cited product materials establish specifications for particular Denon models, not current prices or a universal value winner. Check the documentation for the exact model you are considering.
