Most people do not need an 8K polling-rate mouse. It sends updates to the computer more often than a 1000Hz mouse, but the theoretical report-interval improvement is less than a millisecond. Whether that difference matters depends on your game, system and preferences—and a higher polling rate can add USB traffic and affect performance.
What does an 8K polling rate mean?
A mouse’s polling rate is how often it reports position and click data to the computer. The rate is measured in hertz (Hz), or reports per second. Logitech illustrates the relationship with a 125Hz rate: the mouse sends 125 updates per second, or one every 8 milliseconds. Logitech explains polling rate.

At 1000Hz, the nominal interval between reports is 1 millisecond. At 8000Hz, it is 0.125 milliseconds. Razer described the Viper 8KHz as an 8000Hz mouse in its 2021 product announcement, and its product manual specifies “True 8000Hz (0.125ms) polling rate.”

How much faster is 8K than 1000Hz?
The nominal interval falls from 1ms at 1000Hz to 0.125ms at 8000Hz—a theoretical maximum reduction of 0.875ms in waiting for the next mouse report. That is a comparison of report intervals, not a promise that the entire input-to-screen process becomes 0.875ms faster.

After the mouse reports an input, the computer, game, display and your own response all factor into what happens next. The polling-rate figures alone do not establish how much faster a particular player will perceive the complete experience, or whether they will notice a difference.
Can an 8K mouse affect performance?
It can. Logitech warns that a higher report rate may create extra USB traffic and affect system performance, including causing FPS drops. The warning does not quantify a universal frame-rate penalty, so there is no supported fixed number to expect on every PC. Logitech’s polling-rate guidance is a general caution, not a benchmark for every mouse and system.

The available guidance does not establish a minimum CPU, GPU or monitor refresh rate for using 8000Hz. Rather than assuming the maximum setting is best, compare how the mouse behaves at different supported rates on your own system.
Should you buy an 8K polling-rate mouse?
Consider the whole mouse and how you use it, not just its top polling-rate number. Shape, feel and other features should suit your preferences; the manufacturer specifications cited here do not test ergonomics or establish that 8K is a competitive advantage for every player.

- Consider trying 8K if you specifically want to use a high polling rate and are willing to check how it performs in your games and on your PC.
- Stick with a lower rate if your current mouse feels responsive, you do not have a specific reason to change, or a higher setting affects system performance.
- Choose on overall fit if you are buying a mouse anyway. The maximum polling rate is one specification, not a sufficient reason on its own to buy a particular model.
Razer’s Viper 8KHz is one documented wired example of an 8000Hz gaming mouse; its existence confirms the product and its stated specification, not that it is the right choice for every buyer. Razer executive Alvin Cheung said in the 2021 announcement that latency matters to gameplay, but that company statement is not independent evidence that all players will notice or benefit from 8K polling.

These intervals describe the nominal time between reports. They do not by themselves establish total input-to-screen latency, a guaranteed visible improvement, or a fixed FPS cost.
