Usually, no. Wi-Fi 6 devices can connect to a Wi-Fi 7 router, but they remain Wi-Fi 6 devices and cannot use Wi-Fi 7-only features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO) or 320 MHz channels. Upgrade if your current router is limiting coverage, reliability, capacity, or wired connectivity—or if you are preparing for Wi-Fi 7 clients. The generation label alone is not a reason to expect your existing devices to get faster.
Will Wi-Fi 6 devices work with a Wi-Fi 7 router?
Yes. Wi-Fi generations are designed to communicate across generations using modes both devices support. TP-Link says its Wi-Fi 7 routers support older clients on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and D-Link notes that older clients do not gain Wi-Fi 7 enhancements they lack. Your phone or laptop negotiates a connection based on its own capabilities; a new router does not upgrade the device’s wireless hardware.

A newer router might still improve the overall network if it addresses a specific limitation, such as poor coverage or insufficient capacity. Whether it does so depends on the router, home layout, interference, client devices, and network configuration. Replacing a router is not, by itself, a reliable promise of faster Wi-Fi 6 devices.
What Wi-Fi 7 features require Wi-Fi 7 clients?
Multi-Link Operation
MLO allows compatible devices to use multiple wireless links for throughput or responsiveness. The router and client both need compatible MLO support; a Wi-Fi 6 client cannot use it just because the access point offers it. The Wireless Broadband Alliance describes residential MLO trials using multiple frequency bands, including 5 and 6 GHz. ASUS’s MLO guidance also concerns Wi-Fi 7 setup and compatibility, while TP-Link says its Wi-Fi 6/6E Deco models do not have the MLO capability available on its Wi-Fi 7 Deco products.

320 MHz channels
Wi-Fi 7 supports 320 MHz channels in 6 GHz. The Wi-Fi Alliance’s technology overview describes those channels as enabling twice the throughput of Wi-Fi 6 in the specified channel-capability comparison. That is not a forecast that a typical internet connection will be twice as fast, nor does it apply to a Wi-Fi 6-only client that cannot use the feature.
Wi-Fi 6 is not the same as Wi-Fi 6E
The distinction matters if you are considering 6 GHz. Intel describes Wi-Fi 6 devices as operating on 2.4 and 5 GHz; Wi-Fi 6E adds 6 GHz support. A Wi-Fi 7 router may offer 6 GHz, but a client needs compatible hardware, the system maker must enable the band, and local regulations affect availability. Check the exact specifications for each phone, laptop, or adapter, including regional variants, rather than relying on a broad product-family name.

When should you upgrade?
Consider replacing the router now if
- Your current router is failing or cannot provide adequate coverage or capacity.
- You need wired ports or network connectivity the current router does not provide.
- You are buying Wi-Fi 7 devices and can use their supported features and bands.
Waiting is reasonable if
Your router meets your needs and your devices are Wi-Fi 6. They can connect to a Wi-Fi 7 router, but they will not gain features that require compatible Wi-Fi 7 clients. You can revisit the decision when you replace the router for a practical reason or add Wi-Fi 7 devices.

- Client support: Check whether the devices you plan to use support Wi-Fi 7 and MLO.
- 6 GHz availability: Confirm that both the clients and router support 6 GHz, and that it is available under local rules and enabled in the system configuration.
- Coverage and capacity: Compare the router’s coverage and, if relevant, its mesh and backhaul design with the needs of your home.
- Ethernet ports: Check that port speeds suit your broadband connection and local wired network.
- Total cost: Weigh the cost against the specific limitation you are solving or the Wi-Fi 7 features you expect to use.
There is no universal speed improvement established for a household that replaces a Wi-Fi 6 router with a Wi-Fi 7 model. The right choice depends on your router’s current shortcomings, the capabilities of your clients, and your network conditions.
