You do not need a VPN to visit the dark web’s onion services. The usual way to access them is Tor Browser, which routes its own web traffic through the Tor network. Tor Project generally advises most people not to combine a VPN with Tor unless they are advanced users who understand the configuration. A VPN is not a universal anonymity upgrade, and the available evidence does not establish a “best VPN” provider for this purpose.
What a VPN does—and what Tor does
Tor and a VPN route traffic in different ways. Tor sends traffic through a series of relays; a VPN sends it through a connection to a VPN provider. Tor Project notes that VPNs do not offer the same privacy properties as Tor: Tor Project’s VPN guidance.

A VPN may be useful for a geographic access restriction, but that is a different goal from anonymity. Neither tool makes every activity or identity private by itself. In particular, signing in to an account or entering identifying details can reveal who you are to the site, regardless of whether you used Tor.
How to access an onion service
- Get Tor Browser from the official Tor Project download page.
- Open Tor Browser and connect to the Tor network. Use it to visit the onion address; do not substitute a regular browser configured with a proxy. Tor Project warns that other browsers may leak identifying information and lack Tor Browser’s anti-fingerprinting protections: Tor Browser guidance.
- If the site supports HTTPS, check that the address uses HTTPS. Tor protects the route through its network, while HTTPS helps protect the connection between the exit point and the destination site.
Should you turn on a VPN before using Tor?
For most users, no. Tor Project generally does not recommend using a VPN with Tor unless you are advanced and know how to configure both without compromising privacy: Tor Project’s guidance on VPNs and Tor. Combining the two adds another service and configuration choices; it does not automatically add anonymity.

Use a VPN only if you have a specific reason and understand the trade-offs. A claim that “two layers are always safer” is not a sound basis for changing your setup. If you are not sure how the arrangement affects your privacy, use Tor Browser by itself.
What Tor Browser does not protect
Tor Browser routes its own traffic through Tor; it does not automatically route every app or background process on your device. Other software needs separate configuration, and you should not assume that downloads or background connections are protected by Tor Browser: Tor Project’s overview of Tor Browser’s protections.

- Accounts and forms: A login or identifying detail can associate activity with you.
- Torrents: Tor Project warns against torrenting over Tor because torrent applications can expose identifying information.
- Browser add-ons: Avoid installing extra plugins or extensions; they can undermine privacy protections or make your browser easier to identify.
- Downloads and other apps: Treat these as outside Tor Browser’s protection unless they are separately and correctly configured.
Tor improves privacy through layered routing, but it does not promise perfect anonymity or make a user untraceable. Its own guidance describes limitations: Tor Project’s explanation of Tor’s protections and limits.

Is Tor VPN an alternative?
Tor Project labels Tor VPN as beta and warns users not to rely on it for anything sensitive: Tor VPN guidance. For ordinary onion-service browsing, use the official Tor Browser rather than treating Tor VPN as a replacement.

Why there is no “best VPN” recommendation here
The available evidence does not support ranking VPN providers for dark-web use. A meaningful comparison would need current, provider-specific information on logging policies and promises, independent audit scope and date, ownership and jurisdiction, app security and leak protections, device support, and plan prices and renewal terms. Those details can change and are not established by Tor Project’s general guidance. Choosing a VPN based on an unsupported ranking could create misplaced confidence; a VPN is not required to access onion services.
