Most students do not need a VPN just to attend online classes. Check your school’s current instructions first: a university may require its own VPN to reach protected campus resources, while course platforms, video calls and exams may work without one. A consumer VPN is not a substitute for a campus VPN, and some proctoring services prohibit VPN connections.
Do you need a VPN for online classes?
Usually, no—not for ordinary access to a learning management system or video meeting. The University of Illinois, for example, says its Canvas, Moodle, Microsoft Teams and Zoom services do not require its campus VPN. It identifies private network resources and systems with special security requirements as situations where a VPN may be needed. That guidance applies to Illinois services, not every institution; check your own school’s instructions.

A campus VPN is provided or specified by an institution to authenticate users and reach protected university systems. A consumer VPN is a separate commercial service that routes internet traffic through a VPN provider. If a university tells you to use its VPN, follow that direction rather than assuming a commercial subscription provides equivalent access. The University of Pennsylvania describes its University Client VPN as encrypted, authenticated access to PennNet and protected systems limited to campus IP addresses; it also advises users to disconnect when the connection is no longer needed. Can you use a VPN for online exams?
Ask the institution or exam provider before connecting. A VPN does not guarantee access to a course, exam or location-restricted service, and using one to get around eligibility or monitoring rules can conflict with course policy.

The University of Iowa says students taking courses from abroad are responsible for confirming that required resources work from their study location. It notes that some services may be unavailable in some locations and specifically says: “Honorlock, the university’s virtual proctoring platform, does not allow users to connect via VPN or Anonymous Proxy service.” This is Iowa’s rule for its proctoring service, not a universal rule for every exam, but it is a clear reason to check before an assessment. The Open University’s 2021 summary of policy changes discusses geographic restrictions, compatibility of VPN providers with required locations and downloading materials in advance when travelling. Because that summary concerns older policy changes, consult the current student policy and support team rather than treating it as current permission to use a VPN. Will a VPN slow down video calls?
It can affect call performance because a VPN changes how traffic is routed, but the available university guidance does not quantify the effect for commercial VPNs. Oregon State warns that its VPN may slow services such as video conferencing. When the institution requires VPN during a call, its guidance recommends split tunneling instead of sending all traffic through a full tunnel. A split-tunneling feature can let selected traffic use the regular connection, but the feature’s availability depends on the provider, operating system and app; its presence alone does not prove better call quality. How to choose a consumer VPN for study
Consider a commercial VPN only if you have a specific security need on a network you do not trust or another legitimate use approved by your institution. Before subscribing, check these points:
- Course and institution compatibility: Ask whether your school requires its own VPN and whether third-party VPN connections are allowed for the course, library and exam systems.
- Call routing: Check whether split tunneling is supported on the exact device and operating system you use, and whether your school allows the relevant traffic to bypass its VPN.
- Privacy evidence: Separate a provider’s own privacy and security descriptions from independent audit evidence. A feature page is not an independent comparison.
- Device support: Confirm support for your laptop or phone and the operating system version you actually use.
- Total cost: Compare the amount charged for the initial subscription term, applicable taxes and the renewal price. Introductory monthly equivalents can obscure the total commitment and later cost.
What the available provider information establishes
The provider pages below describe features or commercial terms; they do not establish which VPN performs best for online classes. No commercial VPN was speed-tested or personally tested for this comparison, so there is no evidence-based overall winner or independent speed ranking.
