No. You can enjoy arcade racing games with a compatible controller; a racing wheel is an optional way to add physical steering and, on some models, force feedback. Whether that extra feel is worth the cost, space and setup depends on your preferences and the game you play.
Can you start playing without a wheel?
Yes. Forza Support identifies a compatible gamepad as the equipment requirement for its games and notes that assists are available for different skill levels. That is a useful example of how a major racing series supports controller play, not a guarantee that every title has identical controls or options. Forza Support: Overview

Arcade racers are built around accessible play, but the exact control options still vary by title and platform. For example, Windows Central’s October 2026 review of NASCAR 26 says the game is playable on controller and allows input customization; that is one reviewer’s account of one game, not a controlled comparison of wheel and controller performance. A wheel changes the physical input: you turn a circular steering control and may use separate pedals for throttle and brake. Microsoft’s technical description of racing-wheel input covers analog steering, throttle and brake, while noting that features such as clutch, handbrake, shifters and force feedback depend on the device. Microsoft Learn: Racing Wheel and Force Feedback
#1 Best Overall
- Immersive Gaming Experience: Perfect for PlayStation 5, PS4 and PC gaming titles, the Driving Force simulates the feeling of driving a real car with precision steering and pressure-sensitive pedals
- Premium Control: The Driving Force feedback racing wheel provides a detailed simulation of driving a real car, with helical gearing delivering smooth, quiet steering and a hand-stitched leather cover
- Customizable Pedals: These pressure-sensitive nonlinear brake pedals provide a responsive, accurate braking feel on a sturdy base - with adjustable pedal faces for finer control
- 900-Degree Rotation: Lock-to-lock rotation of the Driving Force means you can turn the wheel around two and a half times, hand over hand on wide turns - just like a real F1 race car
- Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
Force feedback is a capability some wheels provide, not a feature to assume from the word “wheel.” Microsoft Learn explains that certain racing wheels can apply forces through the steering axis to simulate road feel, rather than offering only simple vibration. The effect also depends on whether the game and platform support the relevant features.
A wheel therefore offers a different tactile experience; it does not come with a guarantee of more fun, easier driving or faster lap times. The evidence available does not establish a universal winner for enjoyment across arcade racers. A 2014 paper by Li and colleagues discusses an earlier Need for Speed: Pro Street study that found no correlation between controller type and enjoyment. That old, indirect finding is not proof about current games. Li et al., CHI 2014 paper

Controller or wheel: which fits your priorities?
| Priority | Compatible controller | Racing wheel |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | Compact and familiar for many players; Forza Support lists a compatible gamepad as its equipment requirement. Source | May need mounting, setup and storage space. A TechRadar review of one model describes desk clamps and lap rests. Source |
| Physical feel | Uses gamepad controls rather than a wheel-and-pedal arrangement. | Provides wheel steering; some models also include pedals and force feedback, while features vary by model. Microsoft Learn |
| Game and platform support | Check the specific title’s controller support and available remapping options. | Check the exact title, platform and wheel model. EA publishes a game-specific F1 25 compatibility list and default wheel presets for PC; those details do not establish support for every wheel on every platform. EA Help: F1 25 compatibility |
| Cost and commitment | If you already own a compatible gamepad, starting does not require buying another input device. | Costs and capabilities vary, and prices change by region and over time. Compare current local prices and included features rather than relying on a timeless “best budget wheel” recommendation. |
| Enjoyment | A sensible choice if you prefer a simple, familiar setup. | A sensible choice if you personally enjoy physical steering enough to accept the extra hardware and setup. |
How to decide before spending money
- Pick the game and platform first. Look up the support information for the exact title and the platform you use. Some developers publish model lists or presets; for example, EA’s F1 25 page covers its own game rather than wheel compatibility in general. EA Help: F1 25 compatibility
- Decide which wheel features matter to you. Check whether the model includes pedals, force feedback and the controls you want. Capabilities differ, so a basic wheel should not be assumed to have the same feel or features as a more capable model. Microsoft Learn
- Check your space and mounting options. Think about where you would attach or use the wheel and where it would go when you are done. In its review of the Turtle Beach Racer, TechRadar described desk clamps and lap rests, but also noted that this particular model lacks force feedback and a pedal set. Treat that as one product example, not a description of all wheels. TechRadar: Turtle Beach Racer review
- Try the feel if you can. Testing a friend’s setup or a demo can help you decide whether physical steering adds enough to your own play to justify the commitment.
- Check the current local price. Compare the complete setup you want, including pedals if they are not included. Product recommendations and availability can vary by region and change over time.
If you are struggling with a game, adjust it first
Before buying hardware to solve a difficulty or comfort problem, check the game’s assists and control settings. Forza Horizon 5, for example, documents adjustable difficulty and controller remapping. Its 2021 accessibility announcement also describes an offline reduced-speed setting for players who want more time to progress. These are features of that game; other titles may offer different options. Xbox Wire: Forza Horizon 5 accessibility features
If you are shopping for a wheel, verify compatibility for your exact game and platform, what the box includes, how it mounts and whether it has force feedback. Manufacturer guidance can help with a starting check: Thrustmaster’s Forza Horizon 6 guide names its T98 bundle with a two-pedal set and describes availability on PS5, Xbox and PC, but you should still confirm the precise model and game support before purchasing. Thrustmaster: Which Racing Wheel Should You Choose for Forza Horizon 6?
