Yes, a turntable needs phono-stage processing somewhere in the audio chain—but not necessarily a separate phono preamp. A built-in turntable stage or a compatible PHONO input on an amplifier or receiver may already provide the required amplification and equalization. Buy a separate unit only if neither device has a compatible stage.
What a phono preamp does
A conventional magnetic cartridge produces a low-level signal that needs amplification and phono equalization before it can be played through a standard line-level input. Cambridge Audio describes the need for both processes in its phono-stage FAQ. A phono stage may be called a phono preamp or phono stage; it can be built into a turntable, amplifier, receiver, or another compatible device.

That is why the useful question is not simply whether you need a phono preamp, but whether any component in your setup already has a compatible one.
How to connect your turntable
Turntable has a PHONO/LINE switch or LINE output
Select LINE and connect the turntable to a normal line-level input such as AUX, LINE, or CD, or to compatible active speakers. The turntable’s built-in phono stage is handling the signal. Lenco’s support guide describes PHONO output at approximately 5 mV and LINE output at approximately 150–200 mV; those are approximate figures in Lenco’s consumer explanation, not universal cartridge specifications. See Lenco’s connection guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Converts phono signals: a turntable preamp that converts phono signals to line level signals. This state-of-the-art circuitry phono preamp can accommodate magnetic pickups with an input sensitivity of 3mV at 50K ohms
- Low noise operation: offers outstanding performance with it’s low-noise Audio operational amplifiers. The output is 2V max (p-p) at 10K ohms. It’s better to position the preamp close to the source to reduce unwanted noise and interference
- Connects to turntables: connect any Turntable to modern sound equipment without specialized phono input for amplifying music. For the receiver, This can be connected to speakers, computers, laptops and more
- Simple plug & play: This mini preamp has stereo RCA inputs and stereo RCA outputs. Connect the Turntable to the RCA inputs and ground. Then, connect the amplifier Receiver to the RCA outputs
Turntable sends PHONO and your amplifier has a compatible PHONO input
Connect the turntable directly to the amplifier’s PHONO input. Confirm in the product manual that the input supports your cartridge type; a PHONO label alone does not establish compatibility with every cartridge.
Turntable sends PHONO and there is no compatible PHONO input
Add an external phono preamp between the turntable and the playback device: turntable to preamp input, then preamp output to a line-level input such as AUX or LINE. Choose a preamp compatible with the cartridge, and check whether a low-output moving-coil cartridge requires additional matching equipment.

- Tube MM Phono Preamplifier: This Fosi Audio phono preamplifier removes low-frequency noise and ensures clear sound quality by converting phono signals to line-level signals using high-quality components and low-noise integrated circuits. It is designed to safeguard your turntable thanks to its grounding post
- 3 Switchable Gain Modes: You can switch between 3 modes: 39, 42, or 45 dB. High compatibility and customizable control are provided by the adjustable gain levels. Also, it has very good circuitry and entry-level, high-end analog sound
- Tube Preamplifier: With a 3.5mm AUX input, it's also a tube preamp. Fosi Audio used high-quality component parts for the design and assemblage of this phono preamplifier. You can enjoy a very warm and smooth sound
- Applicable Vacuum Tube Model: The compatible vacuum tube models are 6K4, 6J1, 6J4, GE5654, 6AK5, 66, etc. To make changes to your stereo system yourself, simply swap out the vacuum tubes. Consider that distinct tubes produce various sounds
- Package Content: You will get 1 x Box X2 phono preamp, 2 x vacuum tubes, 1 x RCA cable, 1 x power adaptor, and 1 x user manual
Turntable LINE output and amplifier PHONO input
Do not send a preamplified LINE signal into PHONO. That applies phono processing a second time and can cause distortion or poor sound, as Onkyo’s connection guidance notes. Use a line-level input instead.

Phono inputs and external preamps are not interchangeable across all cartridge types. Moving-magnet (MM) and moving-coil (MC) cartridges can have different requirements, and MC support may depend on whether the cartridge is high-output or low-output.

- Onkyo says the PHONO inputs on its A-9030 and A-9050 are for MM; an MC cartridge requires a commercially available MC phono preamp. See Onkyo’s model-specific guidance.
- Cambridge Audio says the AXR85 and AXR100 PHONO inputs accept MM and high-output MC cartridges; low-output MC cartridges need a matching transformer or phono preamp. See Cambridge Audio’s FAQ.
These examples are model-specific. Check the manuals for your exact turntable, amplifier, receiver, or preamp rather than assuming that another model’s limits apply.
If your turntable sounds unusually quiet
Low volume can indicate that the cartridge signal is reaching a line-level input without phono-stage amplification, but it is not by itself a reason to buy equipment. First check that you selected the right input and that any PHONO/LINE switch is set for the connection you made. NAD’s low-volume troubleshooting guidance addresses this kind of setup issue. If the turntable is set to LINE, use a line-level input; if it sends PHONO, use a compatible PHONO input or external phono preamp.

- Convert Phono Signal: The turntable preamp converts phono signals to line level for better sounding audio and volume. This state-of-the-art circuitry phono preamp can accommodate magnetic pickups with an input sensitivity of 3mV at 50K Ohms Please make sure that the turntable you are connecting to use does not have a built-in preamp, if it does then using this phono preamp may result in bad noise.
- Low Noise Operation: The phono preamp offers outstanding performance with it’s Low-Noise Audio Operational Amplifiers. The output is 2V max (P-P) at 10K Ohms. It’s better to position the preamp close to the source to reduce unwanted noise and interferenceMake your vinyl records deliver sound exactly as it's read from your turntable's needle.
- RCA Input & RCA Output: This mini preamp has stereo RCA inputs and stereo RCA outputs. Connect the turntable to the RCA inputs and ground Then, connect the amplifier receiver to the RCA outputs(DC 12V Adapter is included).
- Simple Plug & Play: Connect any phono turntable preamps to modern sound equipment without specialized phono input for amplifying music.Simply hook up the preamp to both turntable and audio device so you can enjoy vinyl in no time. For the receiver, this can be connected to speakers, computers, laptops and more
- 1 Year Warrranty: We guarantee this electric phono preamplifier with both a 30-day, no hassle money back return policy and a 1 year manufacturer’s guarantee.
Grounding and hum
Some turntables and amplifiers have a ground connection intended to help reduce noise. Connect or adjust it according to the instructions for those specific devices. If attaching the ground wire introduces hum rather than reducing it, follow the manufacturer’s guidance for that setup; grounding arrangements vary by equipment.
Quick Recap
