To make an Animal Crossing: New Horizons island feel like a Studio Ghibli film, build for atmosphere rather than imitation: choose a few recurring natural details, make paths invite exploration, and use small signs of everyday life to make each place feel inhabited. The goal is an original island with a sense of wonder—not a replica of a particular film or an official collaboration.
Start with a mood, not a movie scene
Pick one simple idea that can guide the whole island, such as “a quiet village tucked between a forest trail and a river.” Then choose a small palette of materials, colors, and recurring details that support it: perhaps leafy paths, water edges, cottage gardens, and warm lantern light.

Use films as inspiration for broad feelings—wonder, calm, coziness, or discovery—rather than copying protected characters, logos, or an exact composition. Nintendo describes Animal Crossing as a place to “have fun creating a world of your own,” which is a useful principle for making the result yours (Nintendo’s Animal Crossing series page).

Plan a route that rewards walking
Think of the island as a walk with a beginning, pauses, and a destination, not a collection of disconnected photo spots. Sketch an arrival point, a main route, one or two places to linger, and somewhere worth reaching. Bends, short transitions, and partial views can make a familiar path feel like a discovery.

- Share Your Paradise - Show off your island utopia to family and friends - or pack your bags and visit theirs.
- Get Building - Experience a robust new crafting system - collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools!
- Create Your Perfect Getaway - Craft everything from tools to creature comforts as you create and customize your island community.
- Explore Your Island - Collect bugs, decorate your paradise throughout the day, or enjoy sunset on the beach while fishing in the ocean.
- Play Together - Up to eight players can reside on an island; four residents of the same island can play together simultaneously on a single system.
- Choose the arrival: Decide what impression the first area should make—an open garden, a village lane, or a quiet stretch of woodland.
- Mark the route: Connect the entrance to a destination such as a home, plaza, waterside rest spot, or lookout.
- Add pauses: Place a small stopping place along the way, such as a bench or garden corner, rather than furnishing every stretch.
- Test the walk in-game: Follow the route before committing to extensive terraforming. Adjust any section that feels abrupt, cluttered, or too easy to read all at once.
Let nature shape the layout
Use trees, flowers, rocks, water, and changes in elevation as the framework for each area. Buildings and furniture will feel more at home when they seem to belong within that landscape, rather than sitting on an empty stage. You do not need to fill every gap: open space gives the eye a place to rest and helps important details stand out.
Choose the balance that fits your mood. A nature-led island can leave broad sightlines and make greenery the main event. A village-led island can bring homes and small gathering places closer to the path. Either can still feel exploratory: use bends and transitions to control what a player sees next.

Add small signs of daily life
Make places look used, not merely decorated. A bench near a trail, a garden beside a home, or a few objects grouped around a stopping place can suggest routines without turning the area into a display of furniture. Repeat a few details across the island so its places feel connected, but leave breathing room around them.
When reviewing a scene, ask whether each object supports the mood or helps the place feel lived in. If a cluster obscures the route or competes with the landscape, remove or rearrange something instead of adding more.

Use custom designs with a light touch
Original custom designs can provide wayfinding or texture: a simple sign, a small ground detail, or a repeated textile pattern. A few consistent designs are often easier to integrate than many unrelated motifs. Make your own designs rather than relying on film logos or character art if you want the island to remain an original fan creation.
Nintendo’s official island has a Custom Designs Portal with original designs. In its March 12, 2026 announcement, Nintendo said a Nintendo Switch Online membership enables access to six newly announced Nintendo-themed designs through that portal (Nintendo’s announcement). That membership detail applies to the access described in the announcement, not necessarily to every way of using custom designs.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
Review, capture, and share the island
Walk the route again after decorating. Check whether the destination is visible at the right moments, whether pauses feel comfortable, and whether any clutter hides the scene. Capture both an overall view that explains the island’s layout and closer images that show its smaller details.
If you use Nintendo’s Island Tour Creator, Nintendo says you need a Nintendo Account and can use only unedited screenshots and videos captured directly on a Nintendo Switch (Island Tour Creator instructions).
Dream visits let others explore without changing the owner’s actual island, according to Nintendo’s Dream guidance. Visitors may, however, take designs displayed in the Custom Designs Portal, so consider what designs you make available there (Nintendo’s Dream guidance).
Keep fan designs separate from official or commercial claims
A Ghibli-inspired island is a fan creation, not evidence of an endorsement or partnership. Keep the project focused on personal creative play. Nintendo’s business and organization guidance says users may not obtain financial benefit from use of the game, including by selling custom designs or earning advertising revenue with game content (Nintendo’s business and organization guidance). Nintendo has separate guidance for gameplay footage and screenshots shared on appropriate platforms (Nintendo’s game-content guideline). These documents have different scopes; check their current wording before making decisions about monetization or third-party use.
