You can use an assistant app such as Gemini on a compatible existing phone. A new phone matters when you want a particular feature built into the operating system or apps and your current model does not qualify. Before upgrading, check the exact device, region, language, software and limits for that feature—not just whether a phone is marketed as an “AI phone.”
What does “phone with an AI assistant” mean?
The phrase can describe two different things: an assistant app you install and use on a phone, or AI features integrated more deeply into the phone’s operating system and built-in apps. Those are not equivalent. Google says Gemini can be downloaded on mobile, while its more advanced Gemini Intelligence experiences require a qualifying phone that meets high system standards. Apple Intelligence also has supported-device requirements.

That distinction answers a common question: having Google Assistant on a device does not, by itself, mean the device will receive every Gemini experience. Eligibility depends on the feature and phone, not simply the presence of an assistant.

Capabilities vary by model, app, account, region, language and settings. An assistant app may be enough for casual questions or drafting. More integrated tools can use selected app or screen context, help with multi-step tasks, or add features to typing and communication—but those capabilities are not universal.

Gemini Intelligence on qualifying phones
Google describes Gemini Intelligence as a set of advanced experiences for qualifying phones. Depending on the feature and setup, these may include multi-step task assistance, writing tools in Gboard, and sign-to-text. Personal Intelligence can use selected Google apps if you choose to connect them; Proactive Assistance can draw on selected on-device sources such as messages and screenshots. These capabilities require setup, are not available across all devices or accounts, and some have usage limits. See Google’s Gemini Intelligence requirements and feature details.
Selected Gemini tasks and Scam Detection on Galaxy S26
In its February 25, 2026 announcement, Google described a beta feature that can perform selected multi-step tasks, such as ride booking or food and grocery ordering, on select devices including the Galaxy S26. At announcement, it was initially limited to selected apps and began rolling out in the US and Korea. That is not a general capability of every Android phone.

Google also described Scam Detection on the Galaxy S26 series as analyzing calls on-device. The announcement says it is automatically off for contacts and specifies English in the US, with the feature enabled in Settings, for the cited availability. Apple Intelligence on supported iPhones
Apple’s June 8, 2026 announcement lists iPhone 16 models or later and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max among the iPhones supporting its iOS 27 Apple Intelligence features. It also notes that availability varies by language and region, some server-powered tools have daily limits, and new Siri AI features are in developer testing and expected later as a beta. These details describe the announcement, not a guarantee that every listed feature is currently available to every user. Does using an AI assistant mean your data stays on your phone?
No single answer applies to every task or product. Some processing can happen on-device; more complex requests may involve cloud services. Check the privacy information and controls for the specific assistant and feature you plan to use.
Apple’s stated processing approach
Apple describes on-device processing as the cornerstone of Apple Intelligence. For more complex requests, it may use Private Cloud Compute. Apple says relevant request data is processed on Apple silicon servers, is not stored or accessible to Apple, and can be examined by independent researchers. These are Apple’s stated design and privacy commitments; they should not be generalized to other AI services. Details are in Apple’s Apple Intelligence and privacy information.

Google’s Gemini Apps data and controls
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Gemini Apps may process prompts, content shared with Gemini, generated content, app, browser and device information, system permissions, and device data. Google also says some collected data may be reviewed by human reviewers and advises users not to enter confidential information they would not want reviewed or used to improve Google services. This notice concerns Gemini Apps; it is not a description of every on-device Android model or every Google product. Google’s May 12, 2026 security post describes controls including turning AI features on or off, choosing whether Gemini connects with Autofill, limiting automation to apps you allow, and requiring confirmation before Gemini makes purchases. It also describes real-time indicators and privacy dashboard activity logs. These are Google’s descriptions of its controls and architecture; check the settings and terms for the product you use. How to decide whether to upgrade
- Name the task. Decide whether you want basic questions and drafting, on-screen context, phone actions, translation, call assistance or proactive suggestions. A specific recurring need is a better reason to upgrade than the general promise of “AI.”
- Check exact compatibility. Look up the phone model and software version required for the feature, plus any account, hardware or app-integration requirements. A general assistant app may work on your current phone even when an integrated feature does not.
- Confirm availability. Verify that the feature is available in your region and language, whether it is in beta or rolling out, and whether it has usage limits or other eligibility requirements.
- Review data handling. Find out whether the task runs on-device or uses cloud processing, what information and app connections it needs, and how to manage history or activity.
- Judge the practical value. Upgrade only if a feature your current phone lacks would solve a recurring task well enough to justify the cost.
Official feature lists establish eligibility and stated capabilities, not which assistant is most accurate or useful overall. The sources cited here do not provide independent comparative testing to rank Apple, Google or Samsung assistants.
