But a cable upgrade is not automatically the answer: first check the link rate negotiated by your devices and the speed supported by every port between them. Cat 5e and Cat 6 already handle many gigabit connections; Cat 6A is chiefly useful when you need 10 Gb/s across a 100 m channel and both endpoints support it.
How to tell whether the cable or internet plan is the bottleneck
Check the connection from the computer outward before changing your plan or buying a cable. Ethernet endpoints negotiate a rate they can both support; the cable is one part of that link, alongside the ports and devices at either end. The NBASE-T Alliance describes this automatic negotiation in its 2017 downshift white paper.

- Check the negotiated Ethernet link rate. Look in your computer’s network status or adapter settings, or in the connected network device’s interface. The exact location and label vary by operating system and hardware. A 100 Mb/s link where you expect gigabit or faster is a reason to investigate the cable, connectors, ports, and device settings—not proof that the cable is at fault.
- Verify the port capabilities at both ends. Check the router or switch port and the computer’s Ethernet adapter. The link cannot exceed the slower supported port, even if the cable is capable of more.
- Inspect the cable and its path. Look for damage, loose connectors, an old or low-category run, and long or poorly installed in-wall cabling. The printed category alone does not establish the performance of an installed run.
- Test the internet connection over Ethernet. With Wi-Fi disabled, run a wired speed test and compare its result with the subscribed plan. Use a suitable test device and account for other network traffic. If the negotiated link is already at the expected rate but the wired test is still slow, a cable upgrade may not address the cause.
Cable condition or channel quality can limit the attainable link rate, but a low speed reading by itself does not identify the cause. Fluke Networks explains that installed cabling may need performance qualification for higher rates: Will My Existing Cable Plant Support 2.5/5GBASE-T?
Which Ethernet cable category fits the target rate?
These distances describe the guidance in the cited sources, not a guarantee for every installed cable. Actual performance depends on the channel meeting the relevant specifications.

| Category | Supported-rate guidance | What that means for an upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Cat 5e | CommScope lists 1 Gb/s to 100 m. IEEE 802.3bz also defines 2.5 Gb/s over compliant Cat 5e channels. | Do not replace an intact Cat 5e run just because of its label if your target is gigabit. 2.5 Gb/s depends on channel compliance and compatible ports. |
| Cat 6 | CommScope lists 1 Gb/s to 100 m. 2.5/5 Gb/s can work over installed Cat 6 under the relevant channel conditions. 10 Gb/s is limited to shorter or qualified runs; Ethernet Alliance guidance gives a 55 m to 100 m supported segment range subject to channel qualifications. | Cat 6 can suit gigabit and some 2.5/5 Gb/s links. Do not assume a Cat 6 run will deliver 10 Gb/s at 100 m. |
| Cat 6A | Ethernet Alliance and CommScope guidance support 10GBASE-T to 100 m. | The straightforward choice when you need 10 Gb/s across a 100 m channel and the connected equipment supports that rate; often unnecessary for ordinary gigabit internet. |

When replacing a cable can help—and when it cannot
A replacement is worth investigating
- The negotiated rate is lower than the ports should support, and the cable or its connectors are damaged or suspect.
- The installed run does not meet the category or channel requirements for the rate you are targeting.
- You need 10 Gb/s over a 100 m channel, and the equipment at both ends supports 10 Gb/s; Cat 6A is the cited fit for that reach.
A replacement may not improve performance
- Your goal is gigabit and an intact Cat 5e or Cat 6 channel already supports the link.
- A router, switch, computer, or adapter has a slower Ethernet port than the target rate.
- The wired link has negotiated at the expected rate but the internet speed test remains slow; the cable’s category alone does not establish that it is the remaining bottleneck.
For a fixed in-wall run, a basic continuity check is not the same as qualifying the channel for a target data rate. Fluke Networks notes that some installed Cat 5e or Cat 6 runs may support 2.5/5 Gb/s to 100 m when testing confirms they meet the requirements; Cat 6 10 Gb/s reach is shorter. Use a tester designed for the performance qualification in question rather than treating continuity as a speed certification.

Choosing what to change
Match the proposed cable to the target link, the full channel length and installation, and the capabilities of both endpoint ports. If the evidence points to an old or damaged cable, replacing it may restore the rate the rest of the connection can support. If it points to a port limit or a slow internet service, changing cable category alone will not solve it.
