Usually, you need equipment that connects your home to your internet provider and equipment that shares that connection over Wi-Fi—but you may not need to buy two separate devices. An internet-provider gateway often combines modem and router functions, and some apartments and dorms provide an Ethernet connection that can plug directly into a Wi-Fi router. Check what your provider or building already supplies before buying anything.
What each device does
A modem or other provider-facing device connects your home network to the internet service. A router shares that connection among devices on your local network. A wireless router also provides Wi-Fi.

In a common home setup, the connection runs from the provider’s line to a modem or fiber ONT, then to a router, and from there to phones, computers, TVs, and other devices. The Federal Communications Commission’s network diagram identifies equipment such as a cable or DSL modem and an optical network terminal (ONT) as customer-premises equipment at the connection to the provider-managed network. A modem converts the incoming service connection—such as coaxial cable or telephone wiring—into a connection usable by your network. Fiber service commonly uses an ONT, which terminates the optical connection. People sometimes call fiber equipment a “modem,” but the exact equipment arrangement depends on the provider.

Router
A router directs the internet connection to devices on your local network. If it is a wireless router, it also broadcasts Wi-Fi. The router may be a separate box or built into provider-supplied equipment.
Gateway
A gateway often means one device combining modem and router functions. Check what the device actually does rather than relying on its name: provider terminology can vary, and a gateway may or may not provide Wi-Fi.

When you need separate equipment—and when you don’t
| What you have | What you may need |
|---|---|
| Separate modem or ONT, with no router | A router to share the connection; choose a wireless router if you need Wi-Fi. |
| A modem-router gateway with Wi-Fi enabled | Usually nothing additional for ordinary Wi-Fi access. |
| A provider device that has a router but no Wi-Fi | A wireless access point or Wi-Fi router configured to work with the existing equipment. |
| An Ethernet jack supplied by an apartment or dorm | Possibly a Wi-Fi router that connects to the jack; ask whether the building already provides Wi-Fi or requires particular settings. |
Google notes that some apartment buildings and college dorms allow a Wi-Fi router to connect directly to a wall Ethernet jack, without a modem. Whether the building provides wireless service is a separate question. Google Home and Nest Help: What is a modem?

Cable and DSL
These services generally require customer equipment suited to the service: a compatible modem connected to a separate router, or a combination gateway. Before replacing or buying equipment, confirm that the provider supports it. A device that works with one service or provider may not work with another.

Fiber
Do not assume that fiber service needs a cable or DSL modem. A fiber installation may use an ONT with a separate router, or provider equipment that combines functions. Your ISP can identify the required connection and whether you can use your own router. Provider-specific equipment and router requirements should not be treated as universal rules for all fiber services. Brightspeed: Fiber equipment and modem FAQs
Apartment or dorm Ethernet
If the building provides active Ethernet at the wall, you may be able to connect a router there instead of supplying a modem. Ask the building or internet provider whether the jack is active, whether Wi-Fi is included, and whether the connection requires registration or particular network settings.

How to check what you already have
- Identify the service. Find out whether your connection is cable, DSL, fiber, or building-provided Ethernet.
- Inspect the installed equipment. Check its label and ports, and consult the setup instructions to see whether it is a modem, ONT, router, or gateway and whether it provides Wi-Fi.
- Check whether Wi-Fi is already working. If your devices can connect wirelessly through the provider’s equipment, you may already have the router function you need.
- Ask the ISP or building before buying. Confirm compatibility, whether customer-owned equipment is allowed, and what hardware or settings the service requires.
- Buy only what is missing. If the existing setup provides internet but not wireless access, a compatible Wi-Fi router may be enough; do not automatically purchase both a modem and a router.
Choosing a router or adding one to a gateway
If you need a router, compare its wired WAN speed capability with your subscribed plan, its Wi-Fi compatibility with your devices, and its coverage for your home. Confirm provider compatibility before purchase; published specifications for one provider’s service do not establish compatibility with another.
You can sometimes connect a personal router behind a provider gateway. Depending on the equipment and setup, the gateway may need adjustment so the personal router acts as the primary router. Google’s guidance for its Google Wifi and Nest Wifi products gives disabling gateway Wi-Fi or using a different network name as product-specific options; these are not universal instructions for every gateway. Follow your provider’s and router maker’s setup guidance to avoid conflicting network settings.

If Wi-Fi works near the router but coverage is poor in other parts of the home, a compatible mesh system or extender may help. It is an optional coverage fix, not a prerequisite for getting Wi-Fi. Check compatibility with your existing equipment and consider your home layout before adding one.
Secure the Wi-Fi once it is set up
- Change the router’s default administrative username and password.
- Use a unique Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Keep the router software updated. If the provider supplied the router, ask whether updates are installed automatically.
- Consider enabling a guest network for visitors.
