Open-source SEO tools cover different jobs in a development pipeline: auditing selected pages, checking links, generating sitemaps, and validating structured data. Lighthouse CI is the best-documented option here for page audits and regression checks; the other tools below are candidate components, but their package-specific commands and behavior need verification against their current official documentation.
What CI can—and cannot—tell you about SEO
A CI check can catch a technical regression or an invalid artifact before deployment. It cannot prove that Google has indexed a URL or that the page will rank. Chrome for Developers describes Lighthouse as “an open-source, automated tool to help you improve the quality of web pages.” Its audits include SEO, performance, accessibility, and more, but a Lighthouse result is a page-level diagnostic rather than a view of the entire search-indexing process.

Google recommends using URL Inspection or the Rich Results Test to see how it understands a page. In JavaScript-heavy applications, what a visitor sees in a browser may differ from what Google can render. Use rendered-page checks when they answer a specific question, but do not treat Lighthouse as a replica of Googlebot.
Choose the tool by the job in your pipeline
| Tool or category | Job | Scope and evidence | What a failing check means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighthouse CI | Run page audits and guard against regressions | Configured URLs or a static build; official Chrome documentation covers Lighthouse, and official LHCI documentation covers its CI configuration. | An audit failed or a team-defined assertion was not met; it does not establish an indexing or ranking outcome. |
| Unlighthouse | Proposed site-wide Lighthouse-style coverage | The title-matching result assigns it this role. Current discovery behavior, commands, limits, authentication, and maintenance were not independently verified. | Depends on the package’s current documented behavior and the pages it actually discovers. |
| broken-link-checker | Proposed crawl-based link validation | The title-matching result names it. Crawl scope, redirects, external-link handling, and current commands were not independently verified. | A link met the project’s failure criteria; confirm which URLs and response cases it checks. |
| sitemap package | Generate an XML sitemap from application routes | The title-matching result calls out a Node library but does not establish a uniquely identified package or its current API. | The generated artifact may be incomplete or invalid; generation alone does not guarantee discovery or indexing. |
| schema-dts plus a JSON-LD validator | Type structured data and validate the rendered JSON-LD | The title-matching result proposes the pairing. The specific validator and its coverage were not independently verified. | A type or validation check failed; this is separate from whether Google supports a rich result for the markup. |
| power-seo | Proposed single-command orchestration of checks | The title-matching result describes a bundle. Package identity, maintenance, commands, and behavior were not independently verified. | Depends on the checks it actually invokes and the exit behavior documented by the package. |
Keep these jobs distinct. A sitemap helps communicate URLs; a link checker tests links; structured-data tooling checks markup; a page auditor evaluates selected pages. A bundled command is useful only if you know which of those checks it runs and how its CI status is determined.

1. Lighthouse CI for page audits and regressions
Lighthouse can run in Chrome DevTools, from the command line, or as a Node module. The CLI and Node workflows require Chrome installed on the machine that runs them. Lighthouse CI adds a configured collection, assertion, and upload workflow that can be used to catch regressions.
Run a local Lighthouse audit
The documented CLI pattern is:
npm install -g lighthouse
lighthouse https://example.com
This runs Lighthouse against the supplied URL; it is not, by itself, a complete Lighthouse CI setup.
What a CI setup needs
- A built or running target site, with its build and start steps defined for the runner.
- Chrome available to the runner.
- A deliberate set of URLs to audit, plus LHCI configuration for collection and assertions.
- A decision about where reports should be stored or uploaded.
- Authentication setup when audited pages require a login; the LHCI documentation describes using a Puppeteer script to prepare browser state.
Choose assertion thresholds to fit your application and risk tolerance. A threshold is a team-owned budget, not a universal SEO standard. A failing assertion means the configured condition was not met; review the report to identify the issue rather than treating the score as a verdict on search performance.

2. Unlighthouse for broader page coverage
The title-matching result proposes Unlighthouse for applying Lighthouse-style checks across a site so developers are less likely to miss pages they did not select manually. That is a useful role to investigate, but the available documentation here does not establish its current installation command, route discovery behavior, authentication support, limits, or maintenance status. Before adding it to CI, check its current official project documentation and confirm which pages it will include.
3. broken-link-checker for link validation
The matching result assigns broken-link-checker the job of finding dead internal or external links during a crawl. A link check is complementary to a Lighthouse audit: it asks whether links resolve according to the checker’s rules, not whether a page passes an SEO audit.
Before relying on it as a deployment gate, establish the crawl starting point and scope, whether external links are checked, how redirects are treated, and which failures produce a nonzero CI status. Those package-specific behaviors and a current working command are not established here, so use the chosen project’s official instructions rather than copying an unverified example.

4. A sitemap generator for URL discovery
The matching result describes a Node package called “sitemap” for generating XML sitemaps from application routes, but that name alone does not uniquely identify a package or establish its present API. Confirm the exact package and version before adding install steps or code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA sitemap gives Google information about pages and other content and can help Googlebot discover URLs. It does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or ranking. Keep pages reachable through crawlable links as well: Googlebot discovers URLs by following links, reading sitemaps, and following redirects.
5. schema-dts and a JSON-LD validator for structured data
The proposed pairing combines TypeScript typing with validation of JSON-LD. These are separate checks: type checking can catch issues in code that constructs structured data, while validation of the rendered JSON-LD checks the artifact that a page emits. Google’s Rich Results Test addresses whether markup is eligible for Google-supported rich-result features; valid markup does not guarantee that a rich result will appear.

The matching result presents power-seo as a single command that bundles the preceding checks. Its package identity, current maintenance, command syntax, and behavior are not independently established here. Before adopting it, inspect its current official repository and confirm which checks it actually orchestrates, whether it calls or replaces the individual tools, and how failures affect the CI exit status.
Build a useful CI workflow without confusing checks
- Make the site available. Build and start the version that CI is meant to inspect. For Lighthouse, ensure Chrome is installed on the runner.
- Define coverage. Select important URLs for page audits, or confirm how a crawl-oriented tool discovers pages. Do not assume a site-wide scan checks every route.
- Run checks for separate failure modes. Use page audits for selected-page diagnostics, link validation for broken links, sitemap generation for the URL-list artifact, and structured-data checks for markup.
- Set failure policy intentionally. Configure assertions and decide which errors should block a change. Treat thresholds as project choices, not search-engine requirements.
- Retain useful output. Decide where reports and generated artifacts go so a failed job can be investigated.
- Check the deployed page where needed. Use Google’s URL Inspection or Rich Results Test for questions about how Google sees a URL; a successful CI run is not proof of indexing.
Fix discoverability and indexing mistakes directly
Google recommends crawlable anchor elements for links and ensuring pages can be reached from another page Google can find. In a single-page JavaScript application, give each distinct screen or content item its own URL. Descriptive titles and meta descriptions, semantic HTML, and textually visible content also help search engines interpret a page.

Do not use robots.txt as a way to keep a page out of Google’s index: it controls crawling, not removal from the index. If a page should not appear in search, use a noindex directive or password protection, as appropriate. This is a distinct indexing-control issue, not something a Lighthouse score can settle.
Where open-source tooling stops
These tools address technical implementation and validation tasks. A curated open-source SEO project list explicitly notes that its collection does not replace proprietary backlink indexes or search-volume data. Treat that as a boundary of the listed tools, not as a claim that every open-source project lacks every kind of search data.
