A PC is needed only for the separate option of streaming PC games to the headset, and whether you need that option depends on the titles you want to play.
Can you use Steam Frame without a PC?
Yes. Valve says games can run entirely on Steam Frame without connecting it to another device. The headset supports native ARM64 and Android-based apps, as well as standalone VR and non-VR experiences. That means the headset has its own operating environment; it is not simply a display that must be connected to a gaming computer.

Standalone support does not mean every game in a Steam library will run directly on the headset. A title needs a compatible standalone version, and its performance depends on what the headset can handle.

You need a PC if you want to use Steam Frame to stream a PC game from your Steam Library through SteamVR. Valve describes low-latency PC-library streaming as a primary design goal, but it is a separate play mode—not a prerequisite for using the headset. Valve’s Steamworks overview describes the standalone and streamed paths.

This makes a gaming PC for SteamVR an optional addition for people whose chosen games call for it. The available sources do not establish one minimum PC specification for every game. Check the requirements for the specific title you plan to stream rather than relying on a universal spec.
How to decide which mode fits your games

Valve developers have cautioned that recent, graphically intensive AAA games may not run well within the headset’s smaller compute envelope. In a September 14, 2026 interview with Tom’s Hardware, Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais said, “Most of those recent ones won’t run very well because it’s a smaller compute envelope, right?” This is a general performance caution, not a claim that every recent game fails or a formal specification. Check the guidance for the individual game.

Example: VRChat has different PC and standalone paths
VRChat’s support guidance, updated September 24, 2026, says its Android build is supported standalone on Steam Frame, while its PC build can be streamed through SteamVR. VRChat says the PC version is not supported as a standalone option because of hardware limitations. This illustrates why compatibility must be checked by app version; it should not be treated as a guide to every other game.
What Valve says the experience should be
Valve developer Jeff Leinbaugh told Tom’s Hardware in the September 14, 2026 interview: “So what we want to be possible is for somebody to put on the headset, browse their Steam library, and then just pick something that they want to play and not worry about too much else.” That describes the goal of making game selection straightforward; it does not promise that every Steam game runs natively on the headset.
