The right route depends on your phone, destination, timing, and local requirements.
Start by checking whether your phone can use an eSIM
An eSIM can get you connected without a physical card or shop visit, but both your phone and the destination carrier must support it. Check your exact phone model and the carrier’s country-specific activation instructions before buying. For iPhone, Apple’s eSIM support information describes activation by carrier assignment, QR code, or carrier app and lists supported carriers by country. That list is for iPhone; it does not establish support for other devices.

If eSIM is available, use the carrier’s official digital activation process. Confirm whether activation happens at purchase or later, and whether you need Wi-Fi to install the profile. Do not assume that a phone’s eSIM capability means every carrier or plan supports it.

If you need a physical SIM, check official online options
Search the destination carrier’s official website or app for delivery, airport collection, or another pickup option. Check stock, delivery destination and timing, activation steps, and required documents before placing an order. A delivery or collection option in one country does not mean the same service is available elsewhere.

- Qatar example: Qatar’s official visitor connectivity guidance says Ooredoo offers visitor SIMs as eSIMs or physical SIMs, with physical cards available for hotel delivery or airport collection. - Thailand example: dtac says Happy Tourist SIMs are sold online, at major airports, and at convenience stores, and describes online ordering with pickup at Suvarnabhumi Airport within 24 hours. Check dtac’s current tourist SIM information for applicable terms and pickup details.
At an airport, verify the location and hours
Use the airport’s own services directory to check whether a SIM counter, retailer, kiosk, or vending machine is available in your terminal and accessible from where you are. Confirm current hours before relying on it; airport services and access can change.
- Madrid-Barajas: Aena lists a SimLocal InMotion shop selling SIM and eSIM cards in the public arrivals areas of terminals 1 and 4, with listed hours of 06:00–22:00. The listing warns that hours may change during special or holiday periods. Check Aena’s current shop listing before going.
- Narita: The airport directory lists SIM sales and cellular or Wi-Fi rental services, including a GPA SIM Card Vending Machine. It notes that the listed counters are before departure passport control. Use Narita’s live directory to check the terminal and current hours.
Use Wi-Fi for the short gap, if you can access it
Trusted public Wi-Fi can help with essential messages, maps, or arranging a SIM while you are between services. Some networks require SMS verification, so access may not be possible without a working mobile number. Qatar’s visitor guidance, for example, says its listed public Wi-Fi locations use one-time SMS verification; that condition should not be assumed to apply to every network. Avoid entering sensitive information on networks you do not trust.

Before choosing a SIM or eSIM, check these details
- Device and unlock status: Confirm the phone supports the SIM type and is unlocked for use with another carrier.
- Coverage and plan fit: Check coverage where you will travel, data allowance and speed where published, and whether you need voice calls or SMS.
- Activation and timing: Find out how activation works, when the plan starts, and whether you need internet access or a specific app to set it up.
- Local rules: Check whether the destination requires identification or registration to buy or activate service.
- Total cost and fulfillment: Compare the full price and confirm delivery or pickup can reach you in time.

If none of those options is available right now
If you already have roaming service, keep it available if practical while you arrange a local option. You can also ask your accommodation or carrier whether it knows of an official sales or delivery route, or wait until a verified outlet opens. Whether roaming or a local plan costs less depends on your destination and expected use.
