Do You Need a Computer Science Degree to Learn C?

You can learn C without a computer science degree or prior programming experience. Choose between a structured C course and learning basic programming first.

No. You can learn C without a computer science degree, and you do not need prior programming experience to start with Harvard’s CS50x. The more useful question is whether you want to tackle C’s pointers and memory concepts right away or build basic programming skills in a gentler first language.

Is a computer science degree required to learn C?

No. A degree is not a prerequisite for learning the language. Harvard’s CS50x 2026 is designed for concentrators and non-concentrators, with or without prior programming experience, and begins its core language instruction with C.

That answers whether you can start; it does not establish how long C will take to learn, guarantee a particular level of skill, or determine what credentials a specific job may require. Learning the language and meeting the requirements for a particular career are separate questions.

Can a complete beginner learn C?

Yes, but C may ask more of a beginner than a language that handles memory automatically. The GNU C Language Manual notes that explicit pointers can make C challenging as a first language and suggests that a complete programming beginner may prefer to start with a language that manages memory automatically.

This is guidance, not a rule. CS50x shows one supported route for starting with C directly; GNU’s advice describes an alternative for learners who would rather first get comfortable with programming concepts before facing pointers.

Choose a learning route that fits your starting point

Your starting point Practical route Trade-off
You want structure and are willing to tackle C now Start with CS50x, which welcomes learners without prior programming experience and begins with C. Lectures and assignments give you a guided path, while pointers and memory concepts can add difficulty early.
You have never programmed and want a gentler first experience Consider learning basic programming in a language with automatic memory management and no explicit pointers, then move to C. You may build confidence before studying C’s lower-level concepts, but you will reach C later. GNU presents this as an option, not a requirement.
You already understand basic programming Work through GNU’s manual sequentially, or use Microsoft’s C documentation, references, and command-line compilation tutorial. Self-guided documentation gives you flexibility; a course may provide a more structured sequence of assignments.

A free, structured way to start

CS50x 2026 OpenCourseWare is a practical starting point if you want to learn C without enrolling in a degree program. Its syllabus describes lectures, walkthroughs, ten problem sets, and a final project. The course is free to take and allows submissions for automated feedback; check the current syllabus for the exact submission process and any certificate conditions, which may differ from free OpenCourseWare access.

The course page says two thirds of CS50 students have never taken CS before. That figure describes CS50 students, not all C learners or all people without degrees.

Do you need to buy a book?

No book is needed to begin CS50x: its syllabus says no books are required or recommended. It lists Programming in C, Fourth Edition, by Stephen G. Kochan as an optional title some readers may find interesting, while noting that the free course materials may be superior. Treat a book as a supplement if you prefer a physical text, not as a prerequisite.

Where to look up C questions as you learn

Use documentation alongside lessons and exercises when you need to check language features or compiler steps. Microsoft’s C documentation includes language references and a tutorial on compiling a C program from the command line. GNU’s manual is another option for sequential study if you already understand basic programming concepts.
