Usually, you do not need both. If your TV supports Bluetooth audio, it may pair directly with compatible headphones or speakers. If it does not, you may need a separate transmitter—but only if the TV has an audio output the transmitter can accept. Check your exact TV model, its audio output, and your headphones’ compatibility before choosing equipment.
What do “Bluetooth transmitter” and “receiver” mean?
A transmitter sends audio over Bluetooth. A receiver takes in that wireless audio; Bluetooth headphones and speakers have receivers built in. In a typical TV setup, the TV or an adapter transmits, and the headphones receive. You generally do not need to buy a separate Bluetooth receiver for headphones that already support Bluetooth.

Can your TV connect directly to Bluetooth headphones?
Some TVs can send audio directly to Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Sony says its Google TV and Android TV models that support the A2DP Bluetooth profile can connect to Bluetooth audio devices. Support varies by model, so check the specifications or support page for your exact TV rather than relying on the operating system name alone. Sony’s Bluetooth audio compatibility guidance explains how to check.
If the model supports Bluetooth audio, follow the TV’s pairing instructions. A separate transmitter is not necessarily needed.

When do you need a separate transmitter?
If the TV does not support Bluetooth audio, a transmitter can provide a wireless audio connection—provided it accepts an audio output available on the TV. The connection is wired from the TV’s audio output to the transmitter’s input; the transmitter then sends audio wirelessly to compatible headphones or speakers.
Sony documents this workaround for certain Android TV models that lack A2DP. Its instructions use the TV’s optical digital audio output, USB power for the transmitter, headphone pairing, and a TV digital-audio setting of PCM. This is a model-specific setup, not a guarantee that every transmitter works with every TV. See Sony’s instructions and applicable model information.

Check these three compatibility points before buying
- Find the exact TV model. Look up its manufacturer specifications or support page and confirm whether it supports Bluetooth audio/A2DP.
- Check the TV’s audio outputs. If direct Bluetooth audio is unsupported, note which outputs the TV provides, such as optical digital audio.
- Match the transmitter and headphones. Confirm that the transmitter accepts one of the TV’s outputs and that your headphones or speaker can pair with that transmitter. Do not assume a connector or Bluetooth feature is universal.
Sony’s WLA-NS7 product page is one example of a wireless TV adapter. Sony notes that enhanced features depend on supported Sony models, so check the adapter’s requirements alongside your TV’s model information.

Is Auracast a different option?
Yes. Auracast is a Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast capability: a compatible transmitter can broadcast audio to compatible receivers. A retrofit transmitter or streamer may let a legacy TV serve as the audio source, but the receiving headphones, earbuds, hearing instrument, or other device must also support Auracast. Conventional Bluetooth pairing and Auracast broadcasting are distinct compatibility questions. Bluetooth SIG’s Auracast retrofit infographic describes the broadcast use case; its existence does not establish availability or compatibility for any particular TV accessory.
