A second monitor can keep reference material, messages, or background information visible while you work on a main task, reducing the need to repeatedly switch windows. The clearest established benefit is that people tend to prefer dual-monitor setups; controlled studies suggest they may also improve efficiency for some tasks, but they do not show a guaranteed productivity boost for everyone.
How a second monitor can help
Keep supporting information in view
A second display is often most useful as a place for related but secondary information—not merely as more room for the same task. In a Microsoft Research field study, Jonathan Grudin observed people using multiple-monitor arrangements and found that a secondary screen often supported peripheral awareness of background tasks and communications, as well as quick access to related resources. Grudin’s field study describes why a screen can be useful even when it is not the main focus of attention.

For example, you might keep a source document beside a draft, a spreadsheet beside a report, or a team chat beside the application you are using. The advantage depends on whether those items need frequent attention: a second screen is less valuable when you mostly work in one window and rarely consult other information.

A systematic review of 18 studies found strong evidence that users prefer multiple-monitor arrangements, and moderate evidence from controlled laboratory studies that they can improve task efficiency and reduce desktop interaction. That is evidence for a possible benefit, not proof of a universal gain or a fixed percentage increase in productivity. The review, published in Human Factors in 2021, is summarized in its PubMed record.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Display area may be especially helpful when work involves several applications or a complex information set. A 2003 study of a prototype large display reported benefits, preference, and satisfaction during complex multi-application office work. Because it examined a prototype large display, it does not establish that every second monitor improves ordinary tasks. The Microsoft Research publication record describes that study.
Why a productivity boost is not guaranteed
Results vary by task and setup
In a 2021 laboratory study, researchers tested three computing environments with 18 engineering students working on an information-rich engineering problem. There was no statistically significant overall difference in efficiency or workload. One configuration—a dual-monitor desktop plus one tablet—produced fewer errors than the single-monitor-plus-two-tablets setup and received higher usability ratings than the other two environments. Those specific comparisons do not establish a general advantage for adding a tablet or a second monitor. The study is available through PubMed Central.

These mixed results help explain why having more visible space is not the same as automatically getting more work done. The benefit depends on the task, the information that must remain visible, and whether the arrangement makes it easier to focus rather than adding distractions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConsider the posture tradeoff
Two screens can encourage more head and neck turning, particularly when the main task is spread across a wide or asymmetrical arrangement. In a 2013 study, ten healthy participants completed reading, typing, and search tasks; dual monitors increased head-neck rotation by 9.0 degrees compared with one monitor during those tasks. The small sample and short test do not predict long-term effects for every user. The authors noted that prolonged use of more rotated, nonneutral postures may raise musculoskeletal concerns. - Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
The systematic review likewise identified possible nonneutral neck posture and called for more biomechanical and longer-term field research measuring health and productivity together. Current evidence therefore supports considering screen position, but it does not establish that a particular monitor layout, screen size, or monitor arm prevents discomfort.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether a second display fits your work
- It is more likely to help if you frequently compare information, refer to documents while writing, monitor communications, or move between applications as part of a complex task.
- It may add little if you usually focus on one application, rarely need secondary information, or find that extra visible content distracts you.
- Plan the layout around your main task. Keep the display used for the bulk of your attention in a position that does not require repeated large turns. Arrange secondary information where it is easy to glance at.
- Check the practical fit. Make sure your computer supports an additional display connection, and consider available desk space and where the screens can sit. Compatibility depends on the individual computer; the studies do not establish it for your device.
An adjustable monitor arm may make it easier to position a screen, but it should be treated as an arrangement aid, not as a proven health solution. If your work is mostly single-window, compare the likely value of keeping a second screen visible with simply using your existing display more effectively.
