No. You can use a PS5 Pro with a TV that isn’t 4K; a 4K screen is needed only to see 4K output. The benefits you notice depend on your TV and the games you play, so upgrading your display is optional—not a requirement for owning the console.
What changes if your TV is not 4K?
The PS5 Pro detects display capabilities and lets you select available output settings. With a 1080p TV, you can play games, but you won’t see a 4K picture. The exact resolution and visual result depend on the display and the game; a Pro feature does not automatically mean every game will look or run the same way.

Sony describes PSSR as an AI-enhanced upscaling feature for compatible games. It can help supported titles produce a 4K output, but that does not mean the game is necessarily rendered natively at 4K. Sony also says that compatible games can offer ray tracing and up to 120 fps, and that results vary by title. Should you upgrade your TV?
Start with the TV you already own and the games you actually play. If it supports the output and modes you want, there may be no reason to replace it just for the PS5 Pro. A 4K TV is a reasonable upgrade if you want to see 4K output; 120 Hz input and VRR are additional considerations if you want compatible high-frame-rate or variable-refresh-rate modes.
- Check your TV’s resolution, refresh-rate support, VRR and HDR compatibility.
- Check which HDMI input supports the features you want; a TV’s marketing label does not guarantee that every input supports them.
- Look at the modes available in the specific games you play. Support varies by title.
An 8K TV is not a general requirement for PS5 Pro or 4K gaming. Consider one only if 8K output is a specific priority and the display meets Sony’s stated requirements.
