No—not always. Many video doorbells and security cameras can still provide a live view without a paid plan, but recording and saving event clips is often what a subscription unlocks. Some products offer local storage instead, though that may require compatible hardware. What works without paying depends on the specific model, brand and region.
What does a subscription usually pay for?
The important distinction is between seeing what is happening now and reviewing what happened earlier. A camera may let you open a live feed or answer a doorbell alert without a plan while requiring a subscription to save motion or doorbell recordings in the cloud. Other features, such as longer video history or advanced alerts, may also depend on the plan and model.

For example, Ring says customers can view real-time video and answer doorbell notifications without a subscription, but captured videos and photos are not saved. Google Nest describes event video history as a subscription feature. Those examples do not establish what every product from either brand—or another brand—can do without a plan. Ring’s camera information and Google Nest’s video-storage guidance explain their respective services.
How the options differ by brand
| Brand | Without a paid plan | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ring | Ring says real-time viewing and answering doorbell notifications remain available, but captured videos and photos are not saved. | Its US plan page lists cloud video playback for up to 180 days on the first three plans described. Features vary by country. Check current Ring plan terms. |
| Google Nest | Google describes event video history as a subscription feature. | Storage details depend on the camera or doorbell model. Check Google’s model-specific guidance. |
| eufy | eufy promotes local storage and security features without a monthly fee. | Storage, included hardware and features differ by model; confirm the setup for the specific device. See eufy’s local-security information. |
| Arlo | Arlo says a subscription enables cloud recording; local recording is a separate option for compatible devices. | Local storage requires a SmartHub or Base Station for most cameras, and is not available for every device. Check Arlo’s local-storage requirements. |
What happens when a free trial ends?
A trial can temporarily provide paid features, so using the camera during the trial does not prove that recordings will continue to be saved afterward. Arlo says users can purchase a plan after the included trial to continue features such as cloud recording. Ring says a 30-day free trial is included with a Ring Doorbell or home Security Camera purchase, except for customers who already have a subscription at the same location. How to check whether a camera will meet your needs without a subscription
- Identify the exact model and region. Feature availability can differ between models and countries, even within one brand.
- Check what remains usable without a plan. Look separately for live viewing, answering alerts, event recording, playback, downloading and sharing. Do not assume that access to a live feed includes a saved history.
- Confirm how recordings are stored and retained. Find out whether clips go to the cloud or local storage, how long they remain available and whether you can access them without a paid plan.
- Check trial terms. Confirm when the trial ends and which features stop or change afterward.
- Include required hardware in the cost. Local recording may need a compatible hub or base station. Compare that upfront cost with any recurring cloud-plan fees.
Is local storage a way to avoid monthly fees?
It can be. A compatible local-storage doorbell or camera may save recordings without a recurring cloud subscription, but “local storage” does not guarantee that every feature works without a plan. Check the device’s storage method, what hardware is included, remote access requirements and model-specific limits. eufy promotes local storage without monthly fees, while Arlo says most of its cameras require a SmartHub or Base Station for local storage and warns that not every device supports local recording. eufy local-security information · Arlo local-storage guidance.
