Do USB-C Cables Have Chips? E-Markers, Implants, and Safety

An e-marker is a cable-identification component, not proof of a hidden computer. Learn what it reports, how implanted cables differ, and safer charging practices.

Some USB-C cables contain a small identification chip called an e-marker, but that chip is not a general-purpose computer and is not, by itself, evidence of a malicious device. Specialist cables with deliberately implanted electronics are a separate category. The practical takeaway: choose a cable with clearly stated capabilities, and avoid plugging your phone into USB equipment you do not control.

What does a chip in a USB-C cable do?

An e-marker is a component in certain USB-C cables that reports cable identity or capabilities when queried over USB Power Delivery. It helps connected equipment determine what the cable supports; it does not mean the cable can run arbitrary programs or spy on a device.

Requirements depend on cable type and capability. USB-IF compliance updates say Gen 1 USB Type-C-to-USB-C cables must implement an e-marker, with that requirement effective January 2017. USB-IF also says cable capabilities vary and advises choosing a certified cable suited to the devices and USB environment in which it will be used. USB-IF compliance updates and its cable guidance are useful references.

That does not establish that every USB-C cable has an e-marker. A separate specification excerpt says USB 2.0 Type-C cable assemblies rated above 3A are electronically marked, but the excerpt is hosted outside USB-IF. For detailed requirements, consult the current official USB-IF specification rather than treating that excerpt as definitive.

How is an e-marker different from an implanted cable?

An e-marker provides cable information; a deliberately implanted device is designed to do more. O.MG describes a line of specialist cables with a Wi-Fi implant intended for red-team testing. Its product descriptions include keystroke injection and Wi-Fi controls on the Basic model, with additional capabilities on higher-tier devices. Those are manufacturer-described capabilities of purpose-built tools, not evidence that ordinary USB-C cables commonly contain implants. See the manufacturer’s product information.

The manufacturer’s quick-start information describes product-specific specifications of 802.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHz, 5 V maximum pass-through charging, and 480 Mbps USB pass-through data. These figures apply to that device, not to USB-C cables generally. O.MG cable quick start.

Can a USB-C cable steal data?

A cable alone does not make every connection a data-theft event. The more grounded concern is that a USB connection can link a phone to a computer or charging station that the user does not control. CISA warns: “Connecting a mobile device to a computer using a USB cable can allow software running on that computer to interact with the phone in ways that a user may not anticipate.” Its guidance is about the connected system’s ability to interact with the device, not proof that a cable contains a hidden computer. Claims about public “juice jacking” also need date and evidence context. In a 2023 discussion, CISA said reports it considered did not cite evidence and that the FCC was not aware of confirmed cases at that time. That does not prove such an attack is impossible or provide a current incident count; it does mean possibility should not be presented as demonstrated widespread activity. CISA’s 2023 discussion.

How to choose a cable and charge more safely

Match the cable to the device

  • Check the power rating your phone, tablet, or computer needs, and choose a cable that states a sufficient rating.
  • Choose a data rate that fits your use, such as charging only versus transferring files or connecting peripherals.
  • Confirm connector type and length, then consider USB-IF certification or listing as a compliance and capability signal.

Certification is not a security guarantee against a deliberately implanted hardware device. It helps readers assess conformance and stated capabilities; it should not be treated as proof that a cable cannot be malicious.

At public charging points

  1. Prefer your own charger connected to a wall outlet, rather than connecting your device to a public computer or charging station you do not control.
  2. If you must use an untrusted USB port, an optional USB data blocker or charge-only adapter can prevent a data connection. It is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee of overall device safety.
  3. When buying a replacement, use a USB-C-to-USB-C cable with clearly stated power and data capabilities that fit your device.

For professional security testing

O.MG lists a malicious-cable detector that it says also functions as a USB data blocker. That is a specialist product claim; the available information does not establish comprehensive detection coverage or independent validation. Do not assume any detector catches every implanted cable.
