Deleting a file normally changes the operating system’s records, TRIM tells a supporting SSD that the file’s pages are no longer valid, and garbage collection later reclaims flash blocks. Those steps keep the drive efficient, but they do not constitute proof that the deleted information has been securely sanitized.
If you are handing over, selling, or retiring an SSD, use a sanitization method that the exact drive, firmware, and interface support. Select it for the data’s sensitivity, follow the manufacturer’s current procedure, and use NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 as the current program-level guidance.

What deletion, TRIM, and garbage collection actually do
File deletion changes logical records
When you delete a file, the operating system generally marks its space as available for future use. The directory entry and allocation information change; the SSD is not necessarily told to erase every physical flash cell immediately. Samsung’s explanation of internal SSD behavior describes deleted data as free space that may be reused later.

TRIM is a notification, not a wipe command
TRIM is an operating-system-to-drive notification. Samsung defines it as a feature that lets the operating system tell the SSD when data has been marked erased or is no longer valid. The controller can then avoid preserving those pages during later internal work.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
TRIM operates on logical ranges supplied by the operating system. It does not provide the user with a completion certificate, a forensic statement, or a guarantee that every representation of a file has already disappeared from every physical location.
Garbage collection reclaims flash blocks
Garbage collection is the controller’s flash-management process. A block can contain both valid and stale pages. The controller copies the still-valid pages elsewhere, then frees the old block so it can be programmed again. TRIM helps the controller identify pages that do not need to be copied.
This is primarily a performance and endurance function. Its timing depends on the drive’s firmware and workload, and the mechanisms are not designed as a user-visible security operation.

Why these mechanisms are not secure sanitization
NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 defines media sanitization as a process that “renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.” That is a deliberate security outcome. TRIM and garbage collection are background storage-management operations, so their presence does not demonstrate that outcome.
After a delete, the logical address can be available for reuse while older flash content, spare-area copies, or other controller-managed representations are outside the operating system’s normal view. The supplied official sources do not establish a universal recovery rate after TRIM, nor do they prove that a particular file is always recoverable or always unrecoverable. The safe conclusion is narrower: TRIM plus garbage collection is not a sanitization certificate.
What current NIST guidance means for SSD owners
Rev. 2 is the current edition
NIST published SP 800-88 Rev. 2 on September 26, 2025. It supersedes Rev. 1 and emphasizes a sanitization program: identify the information and risk, select an appropriate method, use controls supported by the media, and retain evidence that the process was completed.

Why the older flash appendix still matters
Rev. 1’s flash-storage appendix is withdrawn, but it explains an important limitation: “overwrite on flash-based media may significantly reduce the effective lifetime of the media and it may not sanitize the data in unmapped physical media.” In other words, writing patterns through the logical address space can both consume program/erase cycles and miss physical locations that the controller has remapped or reserved.
Rev. 1 lists device-supported ATA approaches such as sanitize block erase and cryptographic erase where available. Treat those as examples from a superseded document, not as a universal command list. Use the current Rev. 2 decision process and the drive maker’s procedure for the actual operation.

Choose a method for the situation, not just the file
| Situation | What the reader needs | Practical direction |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping the SSD and deleting ordinary files | Space reclamation and normal operation | File deletion and TRIM may be appropriate, but do not describe them as secure sanitization. |
| Transferring the working SSD to another person or system | A deliberate whole-drive disposition before handover | Use a manufacturer-supported sanitization operation selected for the information’s sensitivity and the drive/interface combination. |
| Retiring the SSD permanently | Assurance that the target data cannot be accessed at the required effort level | Use an approved Clear or Purge-capable method when supported; if requirements cannot be met, consider destruction under your organization’s policy. |
| Highly sensitive information or uncertain device support | Strong assurance and auditable evidence | Escalate to your security or records-disposition process. A supported destructive option may be preferable to an unverified software overwrite. |
The terms Clear and Purge describe different assurance levels in sanitization programs. The correct choice depends on the threat, the information, and whether the media will remain in service. Do not label a procedure Clear or Purge unless your governing policy and the current guidance support that classification.
Step-by-step process before selling, transferring, or retiring an SSD
- Identify the media. Record the manufacturer, exact model, capacity, firmware version if available, and whether the drive is connected through its native interface or an adapter. Interface support can determine which sanitization functions are exposed.
- Protect anything you still need. Verify a separate backup, export required encryption keys, and sign out of accounts or remove the device from management systems. Sanitization is destructive; recovery should not be part of the plan.
- Read the current manufacturer procedure. Look for the model-specific secure-erase or sanitize instructions. Samsung’s Internal SSD Product Information FAQ, for example, treats Secure Erase as a distinct operation from TRIM. Its workflow is manufacturer guidance for supported Samsung products, not a guarantee that every SSD offers the same command.
- Verify the operating environment. Check that the drive is the intended target, that it has stable power, and that the tool or firmware reports the required operation as supported. Avoid starting a whole-drive action from a session that depends on the same drive being erased.
- Select the method according to sensitivity. Use your organization’s current policy and NIST Rev. 2 to decide whether a supported Clear, Purge, cryptographic, or destructive outcome is required. Do not substitute an ordinary file delete or repeated overwrite simply because it is familiar.
- Run the supported operation exactly as documented. Follow the vendor’s order of steps, warnings, and completion indicators. Do not interrupt power or reset the system while the drive is processing the command.
- Validate the result. Capture the tool’s completion status, date, device identity, and any verification information it provides. Validation should establish that the intended device and operation completed; it should not be replaced by opening the old files and assuming they are gone.
- Document disposition. Keep the model and serial information, selected method, operator, time, result, and destination of the media. This record is especially important when another person or organization will receive the drive.
- Use destruction when supported sanitization is unavailable. If the drive cannot perform a method that meets your required assurance, stop rather than guessing. Follow your organization’s approved destruction process or a qualified media-destruction service; destruction is a disposition option, not a way to keep using the SSD.
Why ordinary formatting and overwriting can fail on SSDs
A quick format generally rebuilds filesystem metadata; it is not a physical-media sanitization result. A full overwrite is also a poor default for flash storage. The withdrawn NIST Rev. 1 warning explains two problems: repeated writes can reduce effective media life, and logical overwrites may not reach unmapped physical media.
SSDs translate logical addresses to physical flash locations and reserve space for wear leveling and bad-block management. The operating system cannot directly enumerate every location the controller may have used. That is why a process designed for magnetic disks should not automatically be described as equivalent on flash media.

Secure Erase is separate from TRIM
Samsung’s FAQ explicitly distinguishes Secure Erase from TRIM and describes its own Secure Erase feature as permanently destroying data by erasing data in all cells. That statement is Samsung’s description of its supported feature. It is not evidence that every SSD, firmware version, adapter, or interface implements an identical function.
For another manufacturer, the relevant name may be different, or the operation may be available only in a particular maintenance environment. Check the exact drive documentation, confirm that the command targets the intended device, and preserve the completion record required by your policy.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing “deleted” with “sanitized.” A file disappearing from the file browser proves only that the filesystem no longer presents it normally.
- Treating TRIM as an immediate erase event. TRIM marks ranges as no longer valid so the controller can handle them differently; it does not give you a user-verifiable time at which every physical copy is gone.
- Running a disk overwrite by habit. On flash, it may add wear and still miss unmapped locations, as NIST Rev. 1 cautions.
- Assuming every interface passes every command. A drive’s native connection, firmware, and any bridge or enclosure can affect which manufacturer-supported operations are available. Verify support before relying on a result.
- Using an old checklist without checking its status. Rev. 1 is withdrawn and superseded. Keep its flash warning for context, but base current program decisions on Rev. 2.
- Failing to identify the target. Whole-drive sanitization cannot be undone. Confirm model, capacity, serial number, and connection before clicking the final confirmation.
- Skipping validation and records. A successful-looking screen is not an auditable process unless you record what device was sanitized, by which method, and when.
A compact decision checklist
- Am I deleting files while continuing to use the SSD, or disposing of the entire drive?
- What level of effort must the sanitization defeat for this information?
- Does the exact drive and interface support a current, documented sanitization method?
- Is the proposed method appropriate for flash rather than copied from a magnetic-disk procedure?
- Can I verify completion and retain a record tied to the correct device?
- If support or assurance is uncertain, should the drive be destroyed instead of transferred?
TRIM and garbage collection are valuable parts of SSD operation, but they answer a performance question: which flash pages can the controller stop preserving and reclaim? Secure sanitization answers a different question: whether access to specified data has been made infeasible for the required effort. Treat those as separate outcomes, and choose a documented, drive-supported method when the SSD leaves your control.
