Identify the complete SSD model and firmware, consult the manufacturer’s documentation for that exact variant, then verify the drive’s reported erase capabilities with a protocol-aware utility over a command pass-through connection. A “secure erase” option in an operating system or third-party menu is not proof that the SSD supports a particular sanitize command, nor that the result meets a required security level.
Why SSD sanitize support is model-specific
Sanitization features are optional functions implemented by drive firmware. The words “SSD,” “SATA,” or “NVMe” describe a storage type or interface; they do not establish that every erase method is available. Two drives in the same product family can expose different commands because of firmware, capacity, controller, or regional SKU differences.

NIST defines media sanitization as a process that renders access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort. That is an objective, not a guarantee attached to a button labeled “secure erase.” The method, the areas it covers, the device implementation, and the evidence supporting its security classification all matter.
For current policy work, use NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, the final edition published in September 2025. It supersedes Rev. 1. Some vendor material still cites Rev. 1 or IEEE 2883-2022, so treat those documents as implementation references rather than automatically current NIST rules.

Step 1: Record the exact drive identity
Start with an inventory record before looking for an erase feature. Capture the values exactly as reported by the system or asset tool:
- Manufacturer and complete model or part number, including suffixes.
- Firmware revision.
- Interface and command family: SATA/ATA, NVMe, SAS/SCSI, or another path.
- Capacity and any hardware security designation, such as self-encrypting drive.
- Whether the SSD is installed directly on the motherboard, attached through a USB enclosure, or presented by a RAID or storage controller.
Do not stop at a label such as “1 TB NVMe.” The model string and firmware family are what let you match the drive to authoritative support material. If the computer has several similar SSDs, record the serial number or physical slot as well so that a later destructive operation cannot target the wrong device.
Step 2: Find documentation for that model and firmware
Open the manufacturer’s support page or manual for the complete model identifier. Search within it for the command or feature names that match the drive’s protocol:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- ATA/SATA: “ATA Security Erase Unit,” “Security Erase,” “Enhanced Security Erase,” or “ATA Sanitize.”
- NVMe: “NVMe Sanitize,” “Sanitize actions,” “Format NVM,” “secure erase,” or “crypto erase.”
- Other paths: SCSI or SAS sanitize and format commands, plus any controller-specific restrictions.
Read the qualification around each term. A manual may limit a feature to a particular firmware release, BIOS mode, operating system utility, or direct motherboard connection. Kingston’s NV1 NVMe support material, for example, illustrates why system and BIOS features can affect what is available even when the SSD itself is capable of a function.
Documentation should also explain what the method does to user data, spare areas, caches, and encryption keys. If it does not identify the coverage or security assurance, mark the capability as unverified rather than inferring it from the menu name.
Step 3: Ask the drive what it supports
Manufacturer utilities and protocol-aware management tools can query the device instead of relying on a generic operating-system label. Use a utility that explicitly reports sanitize or erase support for the connected drive.

ATA/SATA and openSeaChest
Seagate’s openSeaChest documentation describes erase methods as optional and firmware-controlled. Its --showEraseSupport option reports the methods the device advertises and, where supported by the tool, whether they are associated with Clear or Purge capability. Run that query against the intended drive and save the complete output with your inventory record.
The output is evidence of what the firmware reports; it is not permission to erase the drive. Confirm the model, serial number, and connection before running any command that changes data.
NVMe
The Linux NVMe project documents an nvme-sanitize utility for issuing an NVMe Sanitize command and returning the result. NVMe Sanitize actions include block erase, overwrite, and cryptographic erase. Use the utility’s capability and result information together with the manufacturer’s documentation; an action being accepted by a tool does not by itself establish that it satisfies your organization’s required assurance level.
Why a graphical “secure erase” menu is insufficient
A graphical application can expose a generic workflow even when the drive, controller, or adapter cannot execute the underlying command. It may also use a different operation for different protocols. Treat the menu as a request mechanism only after a protocol-aware query and model-specific documentation have established what the SSD actually supports.
Step 4: Verify the connection passes commands through
Storage bridges commonly expose identification and SMART data while blocking destructive protocol commands. A USB enclosure can therefore make a capable SSD appear not to support sanitize, or can leave a generic utility unable to prove what will happen.
When support is missing or ambiguous, shut down and connect the SSD through a direct motherboard interface or another path the manufacturer explicitly documents as compatible. For SATA, that normally means a direct SATA data and power connection; for NVMe, use the supported PCIe slot or adapter. RAID and hardware storage controllers can translate or filter commands in the same way as USB bridges, so test the physical drive outside the array only if the controller and vendor procedures permit it.

Protocol names are not interchangeable
| Drive or path | Names you may see | What must be verified |
|---|---|---|
| ATA/SATA SSD | Security Erase, Enhanced Security Erase, ATA Sanitize | Which command is implemented, the media areas covered, firmware restrictions, and the vendor’s stated assurance. |
| NVMe SSD | NVMe Sanitize: block erase, overwrite, or crypto erase | Which Sanitize actions the controller advertises, completion/result reporting, and the manufacturer’s interpretation of the outcome. |
| NVMe Format NVM | Format NVM secure-erase setting, sometimes described as crypto erase | Whether the vendor documents the operation as meeting the required security level. Seagate’s reference says Format NVM crypto erase is not considered Purge without supporting vendor documentation. |
| SAS/SCSI or translated storage | Device-specific sanitize, format, or erase commands | The command set implemented by the device and whether the host controller or bridge passes it through unchanged. |
These labels identify different command paths. “Crypto erase” in one utility is not automatically equivalent to “crypto erase” in another, and neither label alone proves a Clear or Purge result.
Interpret what a supported method actually means
Once a method appears in the device report, examine five separate questions before treating it as suitable:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Coverage
Determine which user-addressable blocks, overprovisioned space, spare blocks, caches, and metadata the operation reaches. Flash translation layers can leave data outside ordinary logical block ranges; only the vendor can document how its implementation handles those areas.
Mechanism
Classify the operation as block erase, overwrite, or cryptographic erase. A cryptographic erase depends on the destruction or replacement of keys and on the drive’s encryption architecture. An overwrite command may have different implications on flash than on magnetic media because of wear leveling and remapping.
Assurance classification
Your policy may use terms such as Clear and Purge. Use the classification stated by the drive manufacturer or governing policy for that exact method. Do not infer a classification from a utility’s generic wording, and do not transfer an old Rev. 1 table to Rev. 2 without checking the current standard.

Completion and verification
Check whether the utility reports a command result, progress, or completion state and what the vendor says that result proves. A command that returns without an error is not necessarily evidence that every required area was processed.

Operational constraints
Look for requirements such as an unlocked device, no active operating-system volume, a particular BIOS mode, or a drive removed from RAID. Follow the manufacturer’s sequence exactly; a blocked precondition can leave the operation unstarted or incomplete.
A practical verification workflow
- Inventory the target. Write down model, part number, firmware, serial number, interface, and physical location. Confirm whether the SSD is self-encrypting and whether a controller or enclosure sits between it and the host.
- Match the documentation. Search the manufacturer’s manual and support page for the exact model and firmware family. Record every supported erase or sanitize method and any stated exclusions.
- Query the firmware. With a protocol-aware utility, request the drive’s erase or sanitize support. For openSeaChest, use the documented
--showEraseSupportquery. For NVMe, use the Linux NVMe project’snvme-sanitizedocumentation and the drive’s reported capabilities and result fields. - Validate the path. If a method is absent, repeat the query through a direct, vendor-supported interface. Do not assume that a USB bridge, RAID controller, or generic PCIe adapter forwards the command.
- Map the method to policy. For each available method, document coverage, mechanism, vendor classification, completion evidence, and any sensitivity or regulatory requirement it must satisfy.
- Make the go/no-go decision. Proceed only when the exact SSD, method, connection, and assurance level are documented. If any of those remain unknown, classify the drive as unsupported or unverified for that use case rather than guessing.
How to compare multiple methods on one SSD
Some drives expose more than one erase route. Use a side-by-side record instead of choosing the shortest-looking option.
| Comparison point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Media coverage | Does the vendor identify exclusions, spare blocks, caches, or metadata that are not addressed? |
| Mechanism | Is it block erase, overwrite, or cryptographic erase, and how is that mechanism implemented on this model? |
| Assurance | Does the vendor assign Clear, Purge, or another policy classification to this exact command? |
| Device and path | Does the firmware advertise it, and can the current motherboard, adapter, or controller pass it through? |
| Result validation | What completion status or verification output is produced, and what does the manual say it demonstrates? |
| Operational impact | Must the drive be unlocked, offline, removed from RAID, or booted into a special environment? |
| Expected duration | Does the manufacturer provide a time estimate or warning that duration varies with capacity and implementation? |
Choose the method that satisfies the applicable policy with documented coverage and verification, not merely the one with the most reassuring name.
Troubleshooting when support is not visible
The utility reports no sanitize or secure-erase method
- Recheck the model string and firmware against the support page.
- Move the SSD from a USB enclosure or RAID controller to a direct, supported interface.
- Use a protocol-aware utility rather than an operating-system disk menu.
- Check whether the device is locked, active, or in a BIOS mode that hides the command.
- Ask the manufacturer whether the feature is absent from that firmware branch.
The utility sees the drive but cannot execute the command
Identification and SMART pass-through do not prove sanitize pass-through. Treat the adapter or controller as the first suspect, then verify that the drive is not the current boot volume and that any vendor preconditions are met. Do not keep retrying destructive commands through an unverified path.
The menu offers “crypto erase,” but documentation is silent
Record the option as an unverified implementation. In particular, do not label an NVMe Format NVM crypto-erase operation as Purge without supporting vendor evidence. Select a documented method or escalate to the device manufacturer or an appropriately qualified sanitization provider.
Best Value
The drive is part of a RAID set
Do not issue a sanitize command to an individual member while the array is active. The controller may intercept the request, and taking a member offline can damage availability or recovery plans. Follow the controller and SSD vendor’s procedure for decommissioning the physical device.
Before running any destructive operation
Checking capability is non-destructive; sanitizing is not. Before execution:
- Back up data that must be retained and verify that the backup can be restored.
- Confirm the target by model, serial number, capacity, and physical slot.
- Record the firmware, utility version, connection path, and the pre-operation capability report.
- Remove the SSD from active workloads and follow the vendor’s boot or offline requirements.
- Ensure power is stable. An interruption can leave the device unavailable or the result uncertain.
- Capture the utility’s completion and result output for the asset record.
- If the SSD cannot provide a documented method suitable for the information sensitivity, use an approved disposal or professional media-sanitization process instead of improvising.
Never assume that deleting partitions, formatting a volume, or overwriting the logical address space produces the same result as a firmware sanitize command on flash storage.

Keeping standards and vendor claims straight
NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 is the current final publication as of September 2025. Dell’s “Data Wipe Supported Storage Media Sanitize Actions” article, modified May 9, 2026, still cites Rev. 1 and IEEE 2883-2022. Such material can help explain a vendor’s implementation terminology, but its tables should not be presented as if they were Rev. 2 requirements.
Rev. 1 also warned that ATA Secure Erase implementations on flash media vary. Because detailed Rev. 2 command tables are not reproduced here, use the full current NIST text and model-specific evidence when a policy decision depends on a particular command classification.
What a defensible support record contains
For audit or disposal records, preserve a short evidence packet:
- Exact model, serial number, firmware, interface, and host path.
- Manufacturer manual or support-page reference for the method.
- Raw output from the protocol-aware capability query.
- The selected method’s mechanism, coverage, and stated assurance classification.
- Any restrictions involving locks, RAID, BIOS, adapters, or operating-system state.
- Completion, result, and verification output after execution, if the operation is approved.
- The policy or sensitivity decision that made the method acceptable.
This record separates what the SSD advertises from what the host path permits and from what your security policy requires.
