Some Steam horror games support controllers, Steam Cloud saves, and Steam Families sharing—but none of these features is guaranteed across the genre. Check the individual game’s Steam store page: controller compatibility, cloud-save availability, and sharing eligibility are separate, title-specific details.
How to check a Steam horror game before you buy or borrow it
- Check controller support: On the game’s Steam store page, review its controller support status and the device types named. Steam distinguishes Full and Partial Controller Support; partial support may require keyboard or mouse input for some actions or show unclear button prompts. Steam Input can help with a range of devices, but it does not guarantee identical native support in every game. Valve notes that “Full Controller Support does not necessarily mean that the game makes use of every feature on the controllers” in its November 29, 2023 controller compatibility announcement.
- Check Steam Cloud: Look for the Steam Cloud feature on the game’s store page. In your Library, open the game’s Properties and check the General section to confirm Cloud synchronization is enabled for that title. The global Steam Cloud setting must also allow syncing. Steam Support explains that developers choose which files are uploaded, so the Cloud label alone does not confirm that every save or setting you care about is included: Steam Cloud.
- Check Family Sharing: Look for Family Sharing on the specific store listing. Steam Families shares eligible games automatically among family members, but developers may opt titles out and technical limitations can make some games unshareable. Valve’s September 11, 2024 Steam Families announcement says developers may opt games out for technical or other reasons. When a family member launches an eligible shared game, their saves and achievements are their own.
What each feature does—and what it does not guarantee
Controller support depends on the game and device
A controller label is a useful starting point, not a promise that every controller works the same way. Read the listed device types, especially if you use a PlayStation controller or another less common device. Full support does not mean the game uses every controller feature; partial support can involve occasional keyboard-and-mouse steps or prompts that do not match your controller.

Steam Cloud is not a guarantee that every file syncs
Cloud availability is set at the game level, and developers determine which files use it. A listing marked Steam Cloud tells you the feature is available, but not exactly which saves, settings, or other files are covered. If you are counting on a save appearing on another PC, verify the game’s Cloud setting and allow synchronization to complete before switching devices.

Steam Families is the current Steam feature for sharing eligible games with family members. A game can be excluded by its developer or unavailable to share because of technical requirements. Do not assume that owning or sharing another horror game means a particular title is included.

Example: Resident Evil 2
The Steam listing for CAPCOM’s Resident Evil 2, released January 24, 2019, tags it as survival horror and lists Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, and Full Controller Support for Xbox controllers. It demonstrates that all three features can appear together on a horror game’s listing, but it does not establish support across the genre. - Your saves: Is Steam Cloud listed, and does the game sync the files you need?
- Your access: Is Family Sharing shown for this title?
Steam’s store feature filters can help narrow games by horror, Steam Cloud, and controller-related support. Use the individual listing to confirm details; a filter or one supported feature does not imply the other two.
