The key distinction is that Steam Frame Standalone Verified concerns games running on the headset itself, while streaming a game from a PC is a separate way to play. Valve describes Steam Frame as ARM64 hardware running SteamOS, but its public pages do not provide a full certification checklist or specify a required Unity version.
What Steam Frame Standalone Verified means
Valve says the Steam Frame Standalone Verified designation is intended to help players identify which VR and non-VR games in their Steam libraries work standalone on Steam Frame. That means the game runs on the headset, rather than relying on a PC to run it. Valve separately says Steam Frame can stream the full Steam library from a PC. Those are different ways of playing, so a game that can be streamed is not thereby confirmed to work standalone. Valve’s Steam Frame page describes both options.
Valve lists Steam Frame as ARM64 hardware running SteamOS 3 (Arch-based). That platform context matters to standalone compatibility: developers need a supported build and runtime for the target environment. It does not, by itself, establish that a game must use Unity 6. Valve’s broader Steam Hardware page describes expanding device compatibility ratings, but the public descriptions do not set a Unity-version threshold or establish that all device-rating criteria are identical.
Why Unity version alone does not answer compatibility
An engine version is only one part of a game’s technical and support decisions. For a particular title, standalone operation can depend on whether its developer supports the relevant architecture and operating system, as well as title-specific runtime, input, anti-cheat, licensing, or performance constraints. Valve’s public material reviewed here does not publish the full Standalone Verified checklist, so it cannot establish whether a particular engine version matters in an unpublished test or developer guidance.

- Standalone: The developer’s build must work on the headset’s ARM64 SteamOS environment.
- Streaming: The game runs on a PC and is sent to the headset; this is not the same compatibility claim as standalone operation.
- Engine migration: A developer may upgrade Unity for reasons specific to that game. Such a decision is not evidence of a universal Valve requirement.
A Unity 6 migration example is not a Steam Frame rule
Northwood Studios announced on October 11, 2024, that SCP: Secret Laboratory would transition to Unity 6 in its planned 14.0 “Heavy Duty” update because of licensing changes affecting older releases. The announcement also described minimum operating-system requirements for that game and said Proton/Wine use would remain unsupported for its client. It is a title-specific engine and platform decision; the announcement does not mention Steam Frame Verified. Read Northwood Studios’ announcement.

How to assess a specific game
- Identify how you intend to play it. Check whether you mean standalone operation on Steam Frame or streaming from a PC; Valve treats these as distinct capabilities.
- Look for the game’s current compatibility status and developer notes. The platform-level pages do not confirm the build, runtime, or certification status of every Unity game.
- Separate Valve requirements from the developer’s own requirements. A Unity update required for a named game’s licensing or operating-system support does not prove that Valve requires every game to move to Unity 6.
- If you are preparing a port or update, use current Steamworks or partner guidance. The public product descriptions do not provide enough detail to infer the complete certification checklist.
