Oura focuses on overnight and long-term trends such as sleep-period blood oxygen, heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, and temperature variation. Apple Watch combines sleep and overnight measurements with features such as high- or low-heart-rate alerts and irregular-rhythm notifications on supported models. Neither wearable’s wellness outputs should be treated as a diagnosis, and official manufacturer documentation does not establish a head-to-head accuracy winner.
What can Oura Ring 4 measure?
Oura documents Ring 4 sensors for overnight blood oxygen, 24/7 heart rate and heart-rate variability (HRV), sleep respiratory rate, average body-temperature variation, and movement and activity. Its features also include detailed sleep analysis, daytime stress, automatic activity detection, cardiovascular age, and cardio capacity (VO2 Max). These are manufacturer-described capabilities, not proof of clinical accuracy. Oura Ring 4 specifications

- Blood oxygen: measured during sleep; Oura recommends using the result to look at trends over time.
- Heart signals: heart rate and HRV are tracked around the clock, while sleep respiratory rate is another overnight measure.
- Temperature: Oura reports variations in average body temperature, not an on-demand thermometer reading.
- Movement and sleep: the ring uses movement sensing to support activity and sleep features.
Oura says typical Ring 4 battery life is five to eight days; actual battery life varies with ring size, settings, activity, age, and usage. The ring is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor, or prevent disease. Fit, orientation, movement, circulation, altitude, illness, and other factors can affect blood-oxygen readings. Oura Ring 4 specifications

Apple documents sleep schedules and history, heart-rate alerts for high or low rates, irregular-rhythm notifications that may suggest atrial fibrillation (AFib), cycle tracking, and overnight Vitals. Depending on the model and region, Vitals can include heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist-temperature change, blood oxygen, and sleep duration. Feature availability is model- and region-dependent. Blood-oxygen support needs particular care: Apple describes app-based and background measurements on supported watches, but availability varies by model and region. For certain Apple Watch models bought in the United States on or after January 18, 2024, identified by specified part-number endings, blood oxygen is not available in the Vitals app; Apple describes a separate analysis and Health app experience for some affected models. Check the exact model and purchase details rather than assuming the feature is present. The Blood Oxygen app is for people aged 18 or older, and Apple says readings are for general fitness and wellness, not medical use or self-diagnosis. Apple Blood Oxygen app
How do their health features compare?
| Health signal or feature | Oura Ring 4 | Apple Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep | Detailed sleep analysis; blood oxygen, heart rate, HRV, and respiratory rate are among documented overnight signals. Oura | Sleep schedules and history; overnight Vitals on supported models. Apple |
| Heart rate and rhythm | 24/7 heart rate and HRV tracking. Oura | Heart-rate tracking plus high- and low-rate alerts and irregular-rhythm notifications on supported models. Apple |
| Temperature | Average body-temperature variation. Oura | Nightly wrist-temperature change relative to a baseline on supported hardware; not an on-demand thermometer. Apple |
| Blood oxygen | Sleep-period measurement. Oura | App and background measurements on supported models, with regional and purchase-specific restrictions. Apple |
| Sleep breathing and blood pressure | Nighttime Breathing shows a pattern of breathing disruptions; Blood Pressure Signals analyzes nighttime patterns but does not give pressure readings in mmHg. Oura | The cited Apple feature documentation does not establish comparable sleep-apnea detection or a wearable blood-pressure reading. Apple |
Which is better for sleep tracking?
That depends on which sleep information matters to you. Oura documents a more detailed set of sleep-related signals, including overnight blood oxygen, HRV, and respiratory rate. Apple combines sleep scheduling and history with overnight Vitals on supported models. Both require wearing the device while sleeping, so comfort and charging habits matter; comfort is personal, and the cited documentation does not establish a universal preference.

For Apple wrist-temperature trends, supported hardware must track sleep with Sleep Focus enabled for at least four hours per night for about five nights to establish a baseline. Apple then reports the nightly change relative to that baseline. It is not an on-demand temperature measurement or medical thermometer. Apple wrist-temperature feature

Oura says Nighttime Breathing uses a 30-day window and needs seven days of data to show a prevailing pattern. Its Blood Pressure Signals feature uses a 30-day assessment window and needs at least 15 nights to build a baseline. These are time windows for wellness features, not diagnostic tests. Can Oura Ring detect sleep apnea?
No. Oura’s Nighttime Breathing feature presents a pattern of breathing disruptions; it does not diagnose or monitor sleep apnea. Oura says the ring cannot be used to diagnose sleep apnea, though it may provide insights about sleep quality. A pattern or change is not a substitute for clinical assessment. Oura’s Symptom Radar also combines changes in average body temperature, respiratory rate, resting heart rate, and HRV to estimate signs of strain. It is a wellness feature, not a diagnosis. Oura Health Radar

Does Oura or Apple Watch measure blood pressure?
Oura Blood Pressure Signals does not measure or display blood pressure in mmHg. It analyzes nighttime photoplethysmography (PPG) patterns across a 30-day assessment period; for actual blood-pressure readings, Oura recommends a validated upper-arm cuff. Oura Health Radar
The Apple Watch feature documentation cited here does not establish a blood-pressure reading comparable to a cuff measurement. Do not interpret a wearable trend or wellness signal as a blood-pressure value.

Are either device’s measurements clinically accurate?
The official product and support pages cited here describe features and limitations but do not establish an independent, controlled accuracy comparison between Oura Ring 4 and Apple Watch. Their outputs also differ: a trend, estimate, or alert is not the same thing as a diagnosis or clinical measurement.
Apple describes blood-oxygen readings as intended for general fitness and wellness rather than medical use or self-diagnosis, and notes that reliable measurements may not be possible every time. Apple Blood Oxygen app Oura similarly says blood-oxygen results are most useful as trends, and that fit, movement, circulation, and other conditions can affect readings. Oura Ring 4 specifications
Oura also notes that arrhythmia may affect resting heart rate, HRV, and sleep staging, while circulation issues in fingers may affect pulse measurements. Oura and medical conditions

How to choose between them
- Choose based on the signal you value: Oura’s documented strengths include sleep-period measures and continuous heart-rate and HRV tracking. Apple adds heart-rate notifications and irregular-rhythm notifications on supported models.
- Check the exact Apple Watch first: blood-oxygen features vary by model, region, and—in some US cases—purchase date and part number.
- Factor in charging and wear: Oura publishes a typical five-to-eight-day battery range with usage-related variation. Apple’s cited feature guide explains wearing the watch for sleep tracking but does not establish a battery-life comparison for a particular watch model.
- Use the right tool for a medical question: neither a breathing pattern nor a temperature trend is a diagnosis, and Oura’s Blood Pressure Signals is not a cuff reading.
